By Emily Mayer It was Holy Week 100 years ago, and The Havre Daily Promoter was awash in advertisements from local businesses reminding people to get new shoes, dresses and suits for the upcoming holiday, and to the housewife the foodstuffs they would need for their big feast. Of course, local churches were celebrating with services and Masses focusing on the various events surrounding the arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem, his arrest, conviction, crucifixion and Resurrection. One such service is Maundy Thursday, also known as...
That may not be how the song is sung but that is how we sing it in Etzatlan this summer. We juggle the procession of seasons, winter flips into a few days of spring, which gets dropped on the floor and immediately flames into summer, temps in high 90s up to 100 this week. Dry and dusty. What little breeze we get brings cane ash and field dirt, right into my casa where I can enjoy it at leisure. I yearn for what I now think of as normal times, when the rains come in June, bring...
To our readers, Today will be my last day as a reporter for the Havre Daily News, and I want to bid the paper and the community it serves a fond farewell. I want to. However, I’m afraid my final thoughts cannot be about those things, at least not entirely, because a recent change announced at the paper...

Isaiah 30:21 This is the way, walk in it. I have shared this text many times before because it is a message I need to heed, and most likely, so do you. Out our way, the Tiger Ridge is not a flat plateau, but an area with many ridges, old trails, arroyos, thorn bushes and deep gullies. Like it or not, Charlie and I found many a calf lost and apart from their mama and the herd because they wandered down the wrong trail and ended up in a gully. Unlike the cattle - and especially...

They settled in for some tea and cookies and off she went. "You know, long ago, Ally was my best friend - she's since died and gone to heaven, but I can't help but now and then, think about her - how great she was. Oh, maybe I'd best start out in the beginning. A casual acquaintance invited a group of gals over, including me. Well,...
