    Pam Burke|Updated Apr 14, 2017

Despite the fact that GPS navigation systems are notorious for misdirecting drivers into all manner of wrong locations — like the Swiss driver who had to have his van and himself airlifted by helicopter off a goat trail in the mountains (hand to heart; I swear it’s true) because his GPS said it was the correct route, until he was stuck, when it said, “Oops, turn around and go back” — yes, despite even this, I think those of us who live in the country should use GPS latitude...

  • Innovation should plant seeds across all industries

    Updated Apr 14, 2017

We rely on innovation to change our lives but, we tend to think about what it means for phones or the Internet, not farmland. Just as we rely on innovation to help us meet our future needs, we should also look towards innovation to help our agricultural communities keep up with changing demands. Historically, we have prevented issues such as potato blight, increased the nutritional value of rice and other grains, and met consumers’ constantly evolving needs through the use of science and innovation. As we face new c...

  • A hand up for direct care workers

    Updated Apr 14, 2017

My goal as a legislator is to be a good steward of taxpayer dollars while strategically striving to solve societal problems. The Republican-led House of Representatives voting to increase wages for direct care workers who serve developmentally disabled people is such an instance. Montana’s conservative leaders voted on this wage increase in order to solve a problem and save money in public assistance programs in the long run. It’s good policy. There are 3,000 direct care workers in Montana who provide services for 5,800 peo...

  • Out Our Way:

Mark 15:29-32 Out our way, lots of folks make predictions about the weather, the crops, the rainfall and such. One doesn’t have to be a full scale Jeanne Dixon to predict calves will be born at night during a blizzard in February. Other predictions come just as easy and are as likely to be accurate. Other predictions are just about as sure-fre as well. Every year around Christmas and Easter, Goliath predicts some TV program or book will pop up with “startling new” revelations to demonstrate Christ was a fake and the Gospe...

  • Hello God, it's me, Mara

    Updated Apr 14, 2017

Because I live You know, Lord, many years ago Billy Graham wrote how all-important the resurrection is for each one’s own personal Christianity. He went on to quote the Swiss theologian, Karl Barth who said, “Do you want to believe in the living Christ? We may believe in Him only if we believe in His corporeal resurrection. This is the content of the New Testament. We are always free to reject it, but not to modify it, nor to pretend that the New Testament tells something else. We may accept or refuse the message, but we may...

It's always nice in any sport to win the first home game of the season. However, when the victory includes a dominant performance, it makes it that much sweeter. And for the Havre High softball team, it doesn't get much better than the 16-0 win it scored over Browning Thursday at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. Making it even more memorable was the gem pitched by Alex Barkus, who no-hit the Indians in five innings to get the win. She also struck out 12 of the 16 batters she...
