  • Browning races by HHS girls

    George Ferguson

The Havre High girls basketball team was in complete control of the Central A Conference following a sweep of Belgrade and Livingston this past weekend at home. However, on Monday night, the Browning Indians wrestled some of that control away from the Blue Ponies. In a game which was postponed two week's ago by a severe winter storm, the Indians dominated the second half Monday night on their way to a 57-44 win in the HHS gymnasium. The loss was Havre's first in league play...

  • Indians hold back Blue Pony boys in Browning

    Daniel Horton

The Browning Indians are near the top of the Central A again this season, and their signature style of play proved to be too tough for the Havre High boys basketball team. Monday night, the Central A Blue Ponies and Indians played a makeup game in Browning. But it was the host Indians that earned the valuable conference win, defeating the Ponies 77-60. "We got caught up playing at their tempo," Havre High head coach Curt Leeds said. "The game plan was to really slow down and not try and run with Browning, you can't run with... Full story

  • Ponies tangle with Rustlers on the mat

    Daniel Horton

Last weekend, the Havre High wrestling team proved once again that it's a force and a favorite in the Class A. Now, after a short turnaround, the Blue Ponies will match up against an up-and-coming Class AA program. The Class AA CMR Rustlers house a lot of talented wrestlers, but they're still young. They have improved as a program a lot in recent years, and continue to take positive strides. But with both programs wrestling almost non stop since the start of the season, a Tuesday dual is making coaches tired just thinking... Full story

  • Hi-Line Girls Roundup: Knights stay hot

    George Ferguson

January is starting to wind down, and with each passing weekend, the intensity picks up for area girls basketball teams. This past weekend saw plenty of key games on the Hi-Line, but it started off rocky for the Harlem Wildcats, who were beaten 50-35 last Tuesday in Wolf Point. Chinook's Talya Johnson, left, plays defense during a District 9C girls game against Box Elder Saturday in Chinook. Friday night saw two critical District 9C contests take place. At North Star, the... Full story

    Daniel Horton

With the regular season nearing an end, and teams preparing for the postseason, a lot of important conference games were played over the weekend. And with that, a lot of local teams faced off against each other. On Friday, the Class 1B Rocky Boy Stars suffered their first loss of the season, falling to the Class 2B Harlem Wildcats 73-62. The Stars remain the top team in the 1B with an undefeated conference record, while the Wildcats are at the bottom of the 2B ranks with just one conference win. Box Elder's Randall Gardipee l...

  • Bullhook Clinic construction money should stay in Havre

    Tristan

Editor: Once again, I read about the wonderful benefits of Bullock Clinic. I'm sure that it will benefit those who are less fortunate get medical care, but the looming question for me is why the clinic is having a Great Falls firm build a facility that is for Havre residents and giving revenue and jobs to people who will take the money and spend it in Great Falls. I did some research on the board member who chose to go with the Great Falls firm over a Havre firm purely on a minor technicality. Some of the board members are...

  • Our View: Lessons we can learn about a time of unity

    Tristan

A delegation of 18 Havreites, mostly Havre High students, were in Washington Monday to take part in a celebration of American unity. The group, brought together by HHS teacher John Ita, witnessed the formal swearing in of President Barack Obama for a second term. The students were attending the festivities not as a celebration of partisan victory but as a celebration of America and what it stands for. The 18 didn't know who was going to win the election when they signed up for the trip. The deadline to register was before...

  • Fewer people live in rural areas, districts get larger

AMY R. SISK, Community News Service

HELENA — With Google Earth on their computer screens and cups of coffee cooling on the table, a five-person commission spent five August days in the Capitol discussing, drafting and redrawing lines that would determine the makeup of legislative districts for the next decade. The committee's proposal is currently awaiting legislators' input. It reflects a state population that increased by 10 percent between 2000 and 2010. But not every part of Montana experienced the boom. Many rural counties' populations declined, forcing c...

  • Unborn babies, immigration status, wolves, among House discussions

    Tim Leeds

As bills move forward in the 2013 Legislature for debate and votes, one item discussed at a legislative video conference seems to be changing. Rep. Kris Hansen, R-Havre, said last week that bills had been passing 99-0, 98-0 — but people should not expect that to last. "We haven't offended anybody yet, so it's still going, " she said from Helena during Tuesday's video conference. But bills now are hitting the floor with more of a party-line slant, including a bill passed Monday with the Havre-area Republican representatives v...

  • Juneau: Dropout prevention programs are working

    Zach White

In the first few weeks of a new semester there are two groups of people thinking about graduation, the graduating class and the Office of Public Instruction. OPI announced a continued upswing in graduation rates, with fewer students dropping out, partially supported by recent Graduation Matters Initiatives. "Making dropout prevention a statewide priority is paying off for Montana students and communities," Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau said. "Every student we are able to keep from dropping out of school...

  • Expanding Medicaid plan divides Hi-Line lawmakers

    John Kelleher

The Hi-Line delegation to the Montana Legislature Tuesday night held a relatively low-keyed session discussing activities of the recently concluded session. On most issues, there was a partisan divide, with the three Democrats at odds with the two Republicans. But when the issue of the state expanding the Medicaid program to cover health care needs of 70,000 uninsured Montanans was brought up, the rift became more sharp. An audience member took Republicans to task for their failure to support the idea strongly backed by Gov....

  • Our View: Havre schools are right to embrace mobile technology

    Tristan

The administration at Havre Public Schools is considering a plan to let students use their own mobile devices for class work, a stark contrast to the days when use of a cellphone in schools was banned. Personal use of devices would still be prohibited, and school officials are rightly going slow in opening up classes to personal smartphones. A few other Montana schools allow personal mobile devices in classes, but for the most part, Havre would be at the head of the curve. The district will go slowly in figuring how best to...

  • Board hears update on 2013 Great Northern Fair

    Tim Leeds

Fairgrounds manager Tim Solomon, group representatives and board committee members reported that planning is nearly complete on events at the fair, including the carnival, food booths and commercial building. Solomon said one rumour he wants to squelch is that the junior rodeo has been canceled — the event is still being planned for Thursday, July 18. The junior rodeo was moved...

  • Fair Board discusses rodeo sponsorships, barrel racing

    Tim Leeds

The Great Northern Fair Board discussed, at length, issues about how the fairground arena is used including who can sell sponsorships there and how groups can go about renting the grounds. The board revisited an issue raised at its April meeting, when Missy Boucher, a member of both the fair board and the fair funding foundation's board, asked whether the foundation or the association that puts on the annual rodeo at the fair could sell sponsorships on the chutes at the arena. Tuesday, board Chair Bert Corcoran, after hearing...

The Chippewa Cree Tribe Election Committee sent a press release to the Havre Daily News Tuesday, after the paper had gone to press, stating "The Election Board has deemed additional time is required to ensure that the decision as to qualifications of candidates is constitutionally valid." The release, dated Friday, said that the Election Board would no longer accept... Full story
