  • Hi-Line health rankings are low

    Tim Leeds|Updated Mar 31, 2014

A national organization gave low rankings for some local counties in health measures, which a local health official said shows the need to focus on promoting health. "Because much of what affects our health happens beyond medical care, the rankings underscore how important it is to build a culture of health where getting healthy, staying healthy and making sure our kids grow up healthy are top priorities," Hill County Director of Public Health Danielle Golie said. • Abolish trapping on public lands

Trappers are warped. They don't understand the meaning of compassion and seem not to care about the intense suffering they cause. My dog, Dude, was caught in a steel leghold trap while on a much-deserved run in a Montana national forest. He was badly injured and I had to carry him nearly 3 miles to my vehicle. Fortunately a vet saved the little guy's leg but he told me Dude was one of the lucky ones. Please help stop this barbaric practice by supporting the Trap-free Montana Initiative. Sometimes heritage is wrong, and in...

"There’s nothing to do in Havre.” That’s a common refrain around town. We think the statement is unfair. For a city our size, a lot of community activities are held every week. Just the same, there can never be too much to do. Having a vibrant cultural and entertainment life in the community is vital to expand the horizons and opportunities of Havre residents. It makes life for students at Montana State University-Northern more interesting. And it helps economic development by adding another reason to reject that conce...

  • 'Chair-ity' brings in $3K for those in need

    John Paul Schmidt|Updated Mar 31, 2014

Interestingly decorated chairs that were up for auction had people hanging on by the seat of their pants Saturday. The "chair-ity" event, A Chair at the Table, organized by the District 4 Human Resources Development Center, was held at the Eagles Club Saturday. Karen Thomas, HRDC executive director, said the funds raised by the event were going to Havre Food Bank and Northern Montana Child Development Center, most likely for classroom supplies for Head Start and Early Head...

    George Ferguson|Updated Mar 31, 2014

Any season of boys high school basketball on the Hi-Line is an exciting one. But this year was extra special. The Box Elder Bears going undefeated and winning the Class C state championship, the Havre Blue Ponies making the state tournament for the first time in eight years, the Ponies and powerful Rocky Boy Stars starting a new basketball rivalry, that was all just part of a big year of hoops. It was also a big season for individual players in our area, and the 2014 Havre...
