The Hill County Commission voted at its weekly business meeting Thursday to absorb part of the costs of recent health insurance premium increases for its employees and eliminated one of its offered plans in a vote. Hill County Commissioner Mark Peterson said the county currently contributes $1,411 per month to employee health insurance plans, but premiums have risen in the past year and in order to cover that increase the county would need to to raise its contribution to $1,572, which would be a substantial cost to the...
My grandma developed Alzheimer’s in her early 80s, which isn’t a particularly funny way to start a humor column because, of course, the disease is not funny. There were moments we could laugh, of course, because that’s what Burkes do, find humor. Like the time Dad stopped to visit Grandma, his mom, and found her playing cards with another care center resident. He asked them what they were playing and Grandma said, “Gin rummy.” At the same time, her fellow card sharp said, “Pi...
Over the past two years, Montanans watched the president’s attack on oil, coal and natural gas bring our nation to the brink of an all-out energy emergency. Gas prices rose to more than $5 a gallon and many Montanans are worried about how to heat their homes without breaking the bank. We aren’t the only country grappling with the effects of a leader who is unrealistic about our nation’s domestic energy needs. Over the course of the last decade, Europe tirelessly pursued a green agenda with the goal of being “climate-neutral...
If you want to know what's happening in America today, a good place to start is late comedian George Carlin's rant, “It's a big club, and you ain't in it.” In the Carlin worldview, people with money and connections run the country, and the most important club rule is: members always get theirs first; for everybody else it's maybe later or maybe not. March 13 Montana Gov. Greg Gianforte gave the club a win when he signed legislation providing more than $1 billion in tax relief, in the form of income tax cuts, business equ...
I grew up reading Hans and the brothers Grimm and Aesop. I love fairy tales and fables. Back then, we had the unexpurgated versions, full of blood and guts. I’m not saying that was better. I’m simply saying that is how it was. The stories, which I read over and over, never gave me nightmares nor did they leave me pining for the handsome prince to hack his way through the brambles and rescue me from the wicked step-mother. Naïve as I was, I knew that wouldn’t happen. A few mo...

Also, a front page story March 23 reported that the Hill County Park Board discussed improvements to the 4-H Chuckwagon. Board Member Bob...

The Havre High tennis teams may be under new leadership this spring, but the goal remains the same. With new head coach Jeff Miller leading the way, the Blue Ponies will look to continue developing their players and bringing home some more trophies. "We have a very heavy senior class on the girls side, so I'm looking for a lot of those seniors to pave the way for the upcoming girls that are coming up and hopefully put together some team success towards the end of the year,"...
While cold weather does not make it seem like spring, that will not stop the Havre High softball team as it gears up for its new season. After winning the Northeast A Divisional title last year and returning many good players from that team, HHS head coach Tony Vigliotti believes the Blue Ponies are ready to run it back this spring. "We expect to compete in the Northeast A again," Vigliotti said. "We lost two good seniors last year, but we got a lot of returners back so we're...

How is your Lent, your spiritual lead-up to Easter, going? Over at First Lutheran and Messiah Lutheran, we've spent out midweek Lenten services exploring the lives of saints whose commemorations fall during March. You might be taken aback by Lutherans honoring saints. You might be thinking, "Isn't that more of a Catholic thing?" It's true that Lutherans, and Protestants more generally, approach the idea of saints a bit differently than Catholics. And yet, in one of the...
Out our way, one of the realities we face is that calves stray and get lost. Charlie and I often find them in the most unexpected places — wandering about far from the herd and without a clue as to where they are. Granted, open range grazing is no longer the norm and most cattle are raised within fenced pastures so they can’t wander too far from the herd — but remember that we still have mountain lions roaming the area and a barbed wire fence isn’t going to keep them out. Coyotes roam the area as well and a pack could e...
You know, Lord, it's fun to hear how some families prepare for Holidays. "Tillie" shared that one day she mentioned to her son and grandson that it was time to put up the Easter decorations! Her son offered to run up and get them out of the attic. Little grandson "Logan" bounced up and down on his toes, clapped his hands and asked, "Can I help decorate, too. I just smiled at him and told him 'Sure.'" She mentioned how she loved to decorate for seasons, and that Easter ran a...
