MISSOULA - Six years ended up being worth the wait. The last time a Havre High boys basketball team reached the Class A state tournament, it was held in Missoula's Dahlberg Arena back in 2016. Fast forward to the 2022 state tournament, and there were the Blue Ponies, battling the Frenchtown Broncs in the first round of the 2022 A extravaganza Wednesday afternoon. And while it was certainly a battle from start-to-finish, Havre's state tourney drought was snapped with a resoundi...

The last time the Box Elder girls basketball team played in a state tournament on the hardwood of the Four Seasons Arena, they hoisted their second straight state championship trophy. The year was 2019, and the Bears had just cut the nets down for the second straight season. Now, with Joel Rosette back at the helm, Box Elder is returning to state and, wouldn't you know, it's in Great Falls once again. "We're excited," Rosette said after finishing second at the Northern C two w...

As I watched Russian troops march across the Ukrainian border in an unprovoked war that immediately made the world less safe for our kids and grandkids, I thought about the words of a World War I veteran from Great Falls named Mike Mansfield, spoken in the days after Hitler invaded Poland in 1939: “Democracy — as we know it, understand it, and love it — is today facing a challenge to its continuance. This challenge must be met, met by all who believe fundamentally in the process and [who] love the freedom and the respo...
My husband, Peter, and I were traveling in Mexico when we suddenly found ourselves without a place to stay. Over the years, all our accommodations while traveling have been quirky in one way or another, but they have all been pretty much what we were expecting, and we’ve never had any insurmountable problems. This week, we encountered insurmountable problems. When we arrived at the airport, the caretaker stood us up. That was not a good sign. We found other transportation and, when we finally found the caretaker, we were g...
Dear people of the Great State of Montana, Hello! I am a third-grade student in Northern Virginia. Our class is learning about the United States, and I will be teaching our school about the state of Montana. In the month of May, I will create a display for our State Fair that I hope will make you proud. Although I have gathered facts about your state from books and websites, I think that I can receive the best information from the people who live there. This is why I am writing to you. I am hoping that you would be willing to...
I don’t claim to have any amazing solutions or answers and honestly any decisions at this point puts everything at risk and is very delicate. Here’s what I can guarantee … Putin is going to take Ukraine regardless of how long or what it takes and make it part of Russia again. So either “the West” does something or that is absolutely going to happen. So assuming that’s a known outcome which is going to happen and sanctions aren’t going to do anything to stop it … I’d say Putin is leaving the West with no choice. Otherwise...

This week seemed like a pretty quiet week compared to last week. No tournaments. The next tournament is the first week of April so bowlers get ready for the No-Tap Tournament. Also would like to mention the sign-up sheet at the desk for Monday Straightaway league we are trying to form for next season. Anyone interested please sign up. May be be a quiet week tournament wise but not score wise. I’m predicting more 300 games before the season is over. My predictions are, Jason M...
The Havre High boys basketball team has had several ups and downs this year but were able to rally in the Eastern A Divisionals to place fourth and qualify for this week's Class A State Tournament in Missoula. Xavier Butler stepped up to help the Ponies keep their season alive, but he knows it was a team effort to make it to state. "We were just sticking together and doing the little things," Butler said. The state berth was the Blue Ponies' first since 2016, so it will be a...

Trottier will be an MSU-Northern Skylight next fall....
