  • Emerick content with Skylights performance

Getting eliminated in the second round of the NAIA national tournament in Jackson, Tenn. last weekend did little to quell the pleasure Montana State University-Northern women's basketball coach Kevin Emerick took from the experience. After all, just eight NAIA schools in the entire nation advanced further than the Skylights did. "We just played great in both games," Emerick said of the win against Brescia and loss to Southern Nazarene. "(Against Southern Nazarene) we had open looks and just didn't make them. We played great... Full story

  • The Fort Assinniboine-Fort Battleford connection

Some 500 miles north of Havre in Canada lies the town of Battleford and the Fort Battleford National Historic Site at the confluence of the North Saskatchewan and Battle rivers. The former river was the northern commercial waterway equivalent to the Missouri River, only the main midwestern marketing center was at Fort Garry (Winnipeg) not St. Louis. At this confluence, the town of Battleford was established in 1875. In many ways, it was similar to Fort Benton with its fur trading posts, and steamboats plying up and down the... Full story

  • Hill County nurse issues whooping cough warning

The Hill County Health Department reported Friday that a 12-year-old Helena patient was confirmed to have contracted a case of pertussis, or whooping cough as it is more commonly known. The department has also confirmed that several suspected cases of the disease have been reported in Hill County, but none have been confirmed at this time because the patients were on antibiotics which makes confirmation difficult. More than 100 cases of the disease have been confirmed in the northern counties of the Idaho panhandle. Cindy Smi...

The trial began Tuesday in 12th Judicial District Court here. Channing J. Hartelius, representing the LaTrays, and Brian Lilletvedt, representing the city, agreed before court convened this morning that the case would be presented to the 12-member jury...

  • Dont make promises you should not keepOur View

Dont make promises you should not keep Our View It's always a bad idea to make promises you can't keep. It's an even worse idea to make promises you shouldn't keep. George Herbert Bush found out about the first problem when he made the famous promise "No new taxes" during the 1988 presidential campaign. A short time later he found out that the federal government didn't have enough revenue and he had to break his promise. Many Montana politicians, Gov. Judy Martz in particular, made the same promise during last year's...

  • Whatcha Otto be cookin

Debbie Otto has a great job. Or at least she is convinced it is. She is the food supervisor for all meals for the school system in Havre. Think that is not much? Well, think again. That means that she supervises a staff of 20 and puts out from 800 to 1,000 meals each day that school is in session. Not only that, but there are 330 breakfasts served each day, as well. For Otto, it all started in 1987. "I applied for a job here in 1987," Otto said. "I had kids in school and I thought it would be wonderful to have weekends and...
