  • MARCA'S BACK

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 3, 2018

Over the years, Marca Herron and her sisters have shared a lot of time and memories on the basketball court. But if Marca, a senior at Havre High, has anything to say about it, the next time, will be the best yet. That's because it won't just be a reunion, in fact it might very well be a celebration, of not just an incredible senior season for Marca, but a Class A state championship for her team, the Havre Blue Ponies, who will enter next week's state tournament in Great...

Officers went over to a residence Nov. 1, 2016, after Koop reported to police that a 17-year-old girl needed attention. When they arrived, officers noticed that Koop w...

  • Big payday for the nerds, and some validation

    Pam Burke|Updated Mar 2, 2018

Behold the mighty comma — arguably the most common of punctuation marks, though oft misused, misunderstood and misplaced, and subject to roughly a bajillion rules — and one comma, or rather lack of a comma, just got its day in court. Oakhurst Dairy in Portland, Maine, just settled in court to pay $5 million in back pay to its delivery drivers because of the way a state law is punctuated — and because at least five of the company’s drivers are big nerds. Here’s the deal, Maine...

  • The conservative case for the CSKT Water Compact

    Updated Mar 2, 2018

In 2015, the Montana Legislature ratified the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT) Water Compact with Montana, which settled all water rights claimed by the CSKT under the 1855 Hellgate Treaty. This was the culmination of a multi-year negotiation process between Montana’s Reserved Water Rights Compact Commission and the CSKT. The final step in the implementation of the CSKT Compact is ratification by the United States Congress. The federal ratification debate has inevitably turned political, and now many of the a...

  • Grief Poem - Difficult times

    Updated Mar 2, 2018

I know, I know, dear one you gone, I know you’ve gone away. But God shows me and I thank Him, you’re with me every day. Our Lord has plans, some big changes; the future’s in His hands. There’s stress and fears, that’s ‘life’ down here, and that’s just how it stands. But Our Lord God sends us His love, all day and while we sleep. When tough times come, we know He cares when our life’s gray and bleak. We each need Christ to hold us close, each day and every hour. We could not bear this pain alone without His strength and powe...

  • Hello God. It's me, Mara

    Updated Mar 2, 2018

You know, Lord, one can certainly be caught off guard if someone asks us, “What has God done for you today?” Our minds freeze, that’s almost like a pop-quiz teachers like to give! That question keeps one thinking about You all day, Lord. We notice Your fingerprints, Your goodness and faithfulness or more specific things like a glorious sunrise, sunsets, finding a penny in a parking lot or a favored item on sale at the grocery store or even a hug from a child. Old or young, we’re fellow pilgrims on the journey to heaven....

  • The Scriptures on Finances - Dealing with money can strengthen a marriage

    Updated Mar 2, 2018

This week, we will again look at some of the information presented by Howard Dayton in his book “Money and Marriage God’s Way.” 1 Peter 3:8-9 “To sum up, all of you be harmonious, sympathetic, brotherly, kindhearted, and humble in spirit; not returning evil for evil or insult for insult, but giving a blessing instead; for you were called for the very purpose that you might inherit a blessing.” The above verse gives us good instruction if we desire to have a successful financial relationship in marriage. I am not a musician...

  • Out Our Way: The well-used trail is the best

    Updated Mar 2, 2018

Out our way, when Charlie and I were pushing beeves up on the Tiger Ridge, I noticed that cattle tend to make and use trails, and, just about always, those trails are the best routes to get from point A to point B. I suspect many of those trails have been there for generations of cattle and are constantly used because they have proven to be the best way to go. One of the reasons we study history is so that we can learn from those who went before what are the best "trails."...

  • George Ferguson Column: Thank you MSU-Northern basketball

    George Ferguson|Updated Mar 2, 2018

The season is over for both the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams. And while their seasons were decidedly different, the Lights and Skylights were both feeling the sting of tough losses the last couple nights. And while it will certainly take both teams some time to get over, my first thought now that the dust has settled on another year of Northern basketball is, if you didn't appreciate what these teams were and what they did this season, t...

  • Ponies not waiting for spring

    Chris Peterson|Updated Mar 2, 2018

No one, literally no one, has been immune to the harsh winter, especially, what has been deemed the snowiest and coldest February on record. And while snow fell and fell, and will probably continue to fall for the foreseeable future, few folks around Havre have probably given much thought to what the weather would do to Havre High spring sports. Longtime Blue Pony tennis coach George Ferguson did though. In fact, he says he's thought about it a lot. "You get one storm like we...

  • Bob Marshall Music Festival aims to stimulate local economy, adds new scholarship program

    Updated Mar 2, 2018

Press Release SEELEY LAKE — The sub-zero temperatures may feel like they’re here to stay, but Montana’s summer festival season will be here before you know it. We’re excited to announce the Bob Marshall Music Festival returns to Seeley Lake for its third year with some exciting new additions. It’s no secret that the town of Seeley Lake was nearly lost to the Rice Ridge Fire that charred more than 150,000 acres of surrounding forest last summer. The air quality devastated the community, both physically and financially. That’s...

  • Hi-Line Living: The roots of skiing: Bear Paw Ski Bowl

    Paul Dragu|Updated Mar 2, 2018

The Bear Paw Ski Bowl is not a typical ski hill. There's no posh resort tucked into it. It's not operated by transplants who've moved to the area just for the skiing. And it's one of only two ski hills in the U.S. on an Indian reservation, the Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation. The book, "Montana Skiing, The Last Best Place" says the Ski Bowl is "unquestionably the most unique ski area in the state." In addition to its location, the Ski Bowl's novelty includes its January to Marc...
