    Tim Leeds|Updated Feb 23, 2021

Despite a slight downward trend in the U.S. for the number of new COVID-19 cases confirmed and new COVID-19 related deaths, and a push for vaccinations, the nation hit a dark milestone Monday with more than half a million Americans dead due to the disease. Johns Hopkins University of Medicine reported on its COVID-19 online dashboard that the deaths in the U.S. stand at 500,617, about the number of Americans who died in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam war...

Long-time Superintendent Andy Carlson resigned in June, and his assistant superintendent, Craig...

    Updated Feb 23, 2021

Press release When Army veteran Richard Perkins passed away at the age of 92 in 2014, he left behind a treasure trove of hundreds of photos he took while stationed in Hawaii after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Perkins was a radio operator who was stationed at Fort Shafter in Honolulu, and he worked at an underground base inside of Diamond Head. Except for a few brief stories, he never talked much about his service to his family. While cleaning out his house after he died, his...

  • Letter to the Editor - It did not have to be like this

    Updated Feb 23, 2021

Editor, A half-million dead. 500,000 lives lost — mothers, fathers, grandmothers and grandfathers, sisters, brothers, husbands, wives and children, too. What does the loss of so many lives look like? There are 525,600 minutes in a year. That is one COVID death per minute, for almost an entire year. It would be like losing half of the residents of the entire state of Montana. Half of our neighbors, friends and families. Or losing all our U.S. Postal Service workers. A half-million would equal all the public-school teachers i...

  • Week 7 wraps up at the Legislature

    Updated Feb 23, 2021

The weather has warmed up and so has the legislative process. Up until now, the bills have been trickling into my committees. I picked up a bill, Senate Bill 284, that I am carrying for the counties. It is what folks are calling the Gravel Bill. More on that in a bit. There are now 284 Senate bills picked up and are either moving forward or stopped along the way. Transmittal, which is the deadline when all non-revenue bills must be in and moving, will be a week from this coming Wednesday. We were informed today that it is pos...

  • Why I voted against a mask mandate

    Updated Feb 23, 2021

I clearly voted against the Board of Health’s mask order last week in our meeting, and I’d like to comment on that meeting. We are in direct opposition to all surrounding counties and the entire Hi-Line with our order. It will be interesting to watch the numbers in those counties and see if there are perilous spikes as is presumed. Mayor Tim Solomon’s comment that we need to be the “bad guys” and not local entities is quite convenient as it will clearly be the county and not the city that is the “bad guy” here. He also clear...

  • Tax breaks for the wealthy now will cost Montana later

    Updated Feb 23, 2021

Helena’s contentious debate on the role of taxes has brought Montana to a critical crossroads: Do we follow the path of states like Kansas, which paid for tax cuts for the wealthiest with major cuts to education infrastructure, and more? Or will Montana stand up to wealthy interests and instead invest in our people and the services that will move our state’s economy forward? Supporters of tax cuts for the wealthy disguise those cuts as an economic growth plan. In reality, tax cuts do very little for the average Montanan and...

  • Three 9C squads ready to battle in Great Falls

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2021

It's going to be a long week. It's going to feel different in so many ways. But the Northern C Divisional Girls Basketball Tournament is as exciting as it gets and that won't be any different. Starting today at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, three District 9C teams will try to navigate their way through arguably the toughest bracket in all of Class C girls basketball. And the action starts this afternoon with the upstart Box Elder Bears (10-7) taking on Cascade, the...

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2021

Three were already locks. Now, two more Montana State University-Northern Lights will be making the trip to the NAIA national tournament next month. This past weekend was supposed to be the 2021 Cascade Conference Championships in Havre, but the tournament was canceled by the CCC last fall. Instead, criteria and voting was used to select the league's qualifiers for the national tournament, which is a mere two weeks away. From their Top-15 rankings in the last NAIA Coaches...

  • Longhorns, Beeters at the top of a loaded field

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 23, 2021

There's no rest for the three District 9C boys basketball teams that qualified for the Northern C Divisional Tournament this week in Great Falls. That's because, in order to play the tournament with all of the coronavirus safety protocols in place, it has to be stretched an extra day, meaning today marks the start of a five-day odyssey in Great Falls. The tournament, which usually runs Wednesday through Saturday, will be much different this year, with fewer games per day, limi...
