Editor: It's disappointing that the Legislature tabled Senate Bill 295 — the bill to repeal the oil and gas tax holiday. Had it passed, the bill would have provided millions in new revenue to communities in eastern Montana that are facing major infrastructure expenses due to the oil boom. Republican members proposed a plan to enforce the successful referendum held in November to place severe limits on employment of illegal aliens. HELENA — A Montana judge has blocked part of a voter-approved law that requires proof of citizenship or legal standing to receive state services, but he left most of it intact to "preserve the intent of the people." HELENA — A plan to simplify income taxes was endorsed in the Montana House on Thursday as lawmakers continued to advance plans aimed at reducing taxes. House Bill 581 would reduce the seven different rates that range from 1 percent to 6.9 percent, and replace them with three rates ranging from 1 percent to 6 percent. Middle School Tennis begins soon Once again, Havre High head tennis coach George Ferguson will be conducting middle school tennis for boys and girls grades 6-8. The first session will be Monday, April 8 at 7 p.m. at the Bill Vaughey Memorial Tennis Courts. Middle school tennis will run each Monday through April 29th. Spring is in the air. Kind of. And while I'm not fooled into thinking old man winter won't return at some point over the next few weeks, or even the next two months, the fact is the days are getting longer and warmer. The Havre Optimist Club would like area families with young children to take part in the annual Easter egg dye at Saddle Butte Custom Smoking, tonight at 6. A state tournament berth is the goal for every prep basketball team at the start of a new season. Alfred Nicholas Johnson Alfred Nicholas Johnson was born in Laurium, Houghton County, Mich., on March 10, 1927, to Alfred Nelson and Elizabeth Jackson Johnson. POLSON (AP) — A 45-year-old Polson man who drove his car into Flathead Lake in an attempt to elude police has pleaded guilty to his ninth DUI. Todd Burland entered his plea Wednesday before District Judge C.B. McNeil. Burland was arrested on Nov. 5 after officers pulled him out of the lake and into a rescue boat.
