  • Hill County Board of Health votes for local mask order

    Patrick Johnston|Updated Feb 20, 2021

The Hill County Board of Health voted 3-1 to implement a countywide mask order at a special meeting Wednesday after a long and occasionally heated discussion. The order requires universal mask wearing except for children under the age of 5 - though 3- and 4-year-olds are still encouraged to wear masks - and other specific exemptions. The order will remain in effect for 90 days, or until the county sees a per-capita spread of COVID-19 of 10 per 100,000 people or lower for two...

  • Out Our Way: Crawling to the Stirrups - Isaiah 30:20-21

    Updated Feb 20, 2021

Out our way, there is the old saying "Ain't a horse that can't be rode nor a cowboy who can't be throwed." I confess I was never much of a rider and was tossed a lot more often than many, but the folks who really can ride aways assured me that "getting dusted" is part of the process, and that what counts is not how often you were tossed off, but how often you got back on. I recall riding one day along a hard-packed logging road in the Bear Paws - and I was enjoying racing...

    Kason Clark|Updated Feb 19, 2021

Both the District 9C Boys and Girls Basketball Tournaments continued on Friday at the Havre High Gymnasium and like most of the past year, was full of uncertainty and excitement. One team had to forfeit their game on Friday while another team did not know until the morning of if they would even play. Two teams had to go to overtime to see who would move on to the consolation game. Only one game seemed to avoid its share of drama. Five and half minutes into the game, Box Elder...

  • Letter to the Editor - PBS film misrepresents wilderness areas

    Updated Feb 19, 2021

Dear Editor: The rebroadcast of the 2019 film “Wild by Law and Nature,” produced by Montana PBS, deserves comment because the film misrepresents wilderness and the issues involved. A big problem with the film is that there is no mention that Congress passed the Wilderness Act and the Land and Water Conservation Fund at the same time in order to provide for both preservation and recreation on separate and distinct public lands. The word “untrammeled” is misused. One speaker even misrepresented wilderness as “untouc...

  • View from the North 40: My childhood still might be the death of me

    Pam Burke|Updated Feb 19, 2021

I don’t mean to alarm anyone, but I almost died of a heart attack Wednesday night and, frankly, I’m too old to be having this kind of heart trouble. Specifically, my heart issue was not of the coronary thrombosis type, but rather the emotional-slash-psychological type seen most in excitable young people who lack years of experience to make them jaded, bitter and numb to random stimuli like a proper adult. The moment, with its unexpected rush of fear-based adrenalin, com...

    Updated Feb 19, 2021

By Patricia Kime Kaiser Health News A Learjet 31 took off before daybreak from Helena Regional Airport in Montana, carrying six Veterans Affairs medical providers and 250 doses of historic cargo cradled in a plug-in cooler designed to minimize breakage. Even in a state where 80-mph speed limits are normal, ground transportation across long distances is risky for the Moderna mRNA-1273 vaccine, which must be used within 12 hours of thawing. The group’s destination was Havre, 30 miles from the Canadian border. About 500 m...

  • COVID gets in the way of even the 9C tournament

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 19, 2021

The coronavirus pandemic already messed up the district tournament dreams of the Hays-Lodge Pole boys basketball team. Now though, the Skylights get to come back home as they take on the arch rival Providence...
