  • State Wrestling 2016: Heavy Hearts: Chinook will march on

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 11, 2016

The Chinook wrestling team has faced a lot of challenges over the years. But nothing will be as challenging as what the Sugarbeeters will face this weekend at the All-Class State tournament in Billings. That's because this state tournament will be unlike any other for the Sugarbeeters, due to the fact that it comes just days after the tragic passing of their beloved teammate and senior leader Jesse Dannels. The loss of Dannels has been a crushing blow to the team, the...

  • Remembering Jesse

    Paul Dragu|Updated Feb 11, 2016

Jesse Dannels was the guy whose game face was always ruined by an uncontrollable urge to smile. Everyone who knew Jesse knew "that smile," Chinook High School wrestling coach and family friend Perry Miller said. "He'd look over and say, 'I got this one, coach' - he couldn't keep from smiling the entire time," Miller said. Perry Miller spoke to Havre Daily News Monday, the day after Jesse's vehicle collided with a semitractor-trailer and the Chinook student died. Miller was...

  • Pet dental month reminds pet owners teeth care is crucial to pet health

    Updated Feb 11, 2016

February is National Pet Dental Month. What does that mean for you and your pets? The purpose of National Pet Dental Month is to make people aware of the importance of dental health in our furry kids. What’s involved in caring for the teeth and gums of our dogs and cats? The first step is being aware of some things at home. Do you notice bad breath? How about a reluctance to eat hard kibble? Shifting food from one side to the other to chew? Swelling of the face? Pawing at the mouth? Any of these things can be a sign of t...

  • Looking Out My Back Door: 'Shine on me sunshine, walk with me world'

    Updated Feb 11, 2016

Back in the day, I loved that song. I suspect it was my “whistling past the graveyard” attempt. Believe me, I was anything but the “Happiest Girl in the Whole USA.” I was full of pretense and misery, unemployed and broke, a single mom, newly divorced. In those days women bore the onus and responsibility for a “broken marriage.” Men were simply labeled “single and up for grabs.” It was not a pretty place for a woman to be. So I had a bit of an internal giggle at myself when the words of my once-favorite song looped through...

  • Skylights want more road wins

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 11, 2016

Momentum is a big thing in college basketball. And the Montana State University-Northern Skylights built up quite a bit of it this past weekend. Now however, the trick is to keep it going. Northern will try and follow up its two big road wins last weekend with two more, starting tonight when the No. 17 Skylights (7-5, 18-5) take on the UM-Western Bulldogs (3-9, 13-11) in Dillon. Northern will then close out its road schedule with a visit to Rocky Mountain College (5-7, 13-11)...

  • Ponies ready for the big races

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 11, 2016

Once upon a time, the Havre High swim teams dominated the Class A portion of the Montana State Swimming Championships — and then along came Billings Central. Now, however, the tide in the pool might again be turning as the Blue Ponies head to the 2016 Montana State Swimming Championships, which run Friday and Saturday in Great Falls. And that tide might be turning especially fast for the Havre High girls, who bring a loaded team to Great Falls ready to compete with the very b...

  • State Wrestling 2016: THE DRIVE FOR A 4-PEAT

    Chris Peterson|Updated Feb 11, 2016

For the Havre High wrestling team, there really is only one meet that matters, one meet that defines its season - the Class A state tournament. And after waiting all season long for it, the Blue Ponies are dying to get the tournament started. Havre will enter the tournament at the Rimrock Auto Arena at the Metra in Billings as the three-time defending Class A champs, shooting for a fourth-straight title, which would tie a school record. And after a historic 2015 tournament, in...

  • No Contest: Lights dismantle rival Argos

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 11, 2016

The Iowa Hawkeyes might be the best team the 2015-16 Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will ever face in their careers. But, they certainly aren't the Lights' rival. No, that's the UGF Argos, and on Wednesday night in the Armory Gymnasium, the No. 3 Lights thumped the No. 13 Argos, 37-5, in an emotional NAIA dual. The night was especially emotional for Northern's two seniors on the mat, and they certainly helped the Lights go out with a bang, and earn a season s...

  • State Wrestling 2016: Havre High has plenty of big guns in Billings

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 11, 2016

The Havre Blue Ponies have won three straight Class A state championships, and nine in the last 12 years. To say they’ve been dominant the last decade would be a gross understatement. And, to say the Ponies are the prohibitive favorite this weekend at the 2016 Class A state tourney, which gets underway Friday morning in Billings, wouldn’t do justice to what the Ponies really are. In reality, barring a natural disaster, the Ponies probably can’t be beat this year in Billi...
