When I was in high school we lived in a house that had a metal-covered gambrel roof — aka barn roof — with a shallow slope from the peak to the first angle and a steeper slope to the eve which was actually an 8-foot deep porch roof that was at a very shallow slope You could say it was built like a ski jump. The easy slope at the top to get your legs under you and your direction lined out, then a steep section to build some great speed, and finally the jump that shoots the ski...

Here it is, February already! I wonder how folks are doing with their new year’s resolutions as they apply to physical training or exercise? I also wonder if followers of Christ have made some resolutions with regards to godliness training? The Apostle Paul makes an interesting statement in his letter to his young pastor protege, Timothy. Paul writes in 1 Timothy 4:8: “For bodily exercise profits a little, but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life that now is and of that which is to come.” Wait a...
Out our way, one learns to listen to the wisdom of those who know what they are doing. It saves time and possibly some broken bones. Charlie taught me that when first approaching a herd of cattle that have been out on their own for a time, one goes slow and easy. “Let them see you and get used to you before you try to herd them,” was his counsel. Range cattle — especially those that have not had to deal with people for a long time, can be a bit edgy and are easily spooked. Back in Wyoming, at my first round up, a guy drove...

It’s been suggested that we count our blessings; let’s give it a try. Following is a list of just a few lifesavers: Electric blanket … bread hot from the oven … letter from favorite niece … watching animal’s antics especially as they are playing in the snow … no wind today, hooray … a good book to read from the library … call from oldest brother … stiffly starched shirts … wet kiss fro...

For decades, a tradition with roots from more than 4,000 miles away has been a staple in Havre culture, and for the 86th year, the annual Swedish Meatball and Norwegian Lutefisk Dinner was held Saturday at First Lutheran Church. What started as a small gathering putting together a traditional meal is now the oldest running ethnic event in Havre, said Jim Griggs, chair of the event.
