  • Update:UM lockdowns lifted; suspect at large

    Updated Feb 6, 2014

MISSOULA (AP) — The University of Montana and other schools have lifted lockdowns prompted by the armed robbery of two Missoula businesses Thursday morning, but the suspect remains at large, police said. Detective Sgt. Travis Welsh says a man with a handgun robbed the Motel 6 and the Taco Bell restaurant on East Broadway around 9 a.m. The campus was put on lockdown at about 10:20 a.m., shortly after a man carrying a gun and a plastic bag was seen running along Arthur Avenue near the university. UM spokeswoman Peggy Kuhr says...

  • Baucus confirmed as ambassador to China.

    Updated Feb 6, 2014

Senate approves Max Baucus as China ambassador ALAN FRAM, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — The Senate easily confirmed longtime Sen. Max Baucus on Thursday to become ambassador to China, handing the job to a lawmaker well-versed in U.S. trade policy but with little expertise about military and other issues that have caused tensions in recent years with Beijing. Senators gave final approval to the nomination of the moderate Baucus, D-Mont., by a 96-0 margin. Baucus, trim and youthful looking for his 72 years, accepted c...

  • Feds should ensure snow-free sidewalks

    Rick Dow|Updated Feb 6, 2014
    8

Our sidewalks are not being cleared of snow to universal approval. Havre’s current ordinance calls for homeowners to clear the sidewalks on their property within 24 hours. Why are the property owners being asked to maintain a public walkway? Are they asked to clear the streets in front of their houses and businesses as well? The answer is, obviously, “No.” This expectation of the citizens to take responsibility for shoveling sidewalks is downright dangerous because it lessens our dependence on government services. Furth...

  • 'Winter in the Blood' celebrates Montana's Hi-Line

    Bill Thackeray|Updated Feb 6, 2014

The one thing that the producer/directors of the new film "Winter in the Blood" capture in a remarkable way is the stunningly spectacular scenery of the mountains, plains and riverbottoms of north-central Montana. Alex and Andrew Smith, the movie-makers from Missoula who were inspired to make a movie of James Welch's first major novel, lay out the striking region of the Hi-Line in a way that has never been seen in film before. But not only is the natural scenery of the region captured very well in the film but also we get a...

  • If it had been a rattlesnake

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Feb 6, 2014

Those familiar dangers we learn from childhood on are such a part of our consciousness that they carry instinctual wisdom and warnings that become second nature. Growing up in the Milk River Valley and the foothills and plains beyond, we know to stay away from the river in flood, stay out of the pasture with the mean bull and don’t pick up a baby rattlesnake, cute or not. Such wisdom even tells us if the rattlesnake has just had its head chopped off, leave it for a while. Refl...

Four years ago, as freshmen, Lacey Waid, Haley Ohm, Breck Don, Peyton Filius and Brandy Lambourne missed the state tournament as part of the Blue Pony varsity team. But as four year-varsity players, that talented five took the Ponies to the Class A state t...

  • Frontier Notebook: MSU-N dominates on defense

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 6, 2014

Three weekends is all that seperates Frontier Conference basketball teams and the postseason. In other words, it’s crunch time in the Frontier. As with every week so far, the Frontier men’s standings saw plenty of upheaval, yet, there is still no clear front runner for the regular season title. Two weeks ago, there was a five-way tie for first place, and those five teams are still either tied, or separated by just one game. The standings have seen some change thanks to thr...
