PHILADELPHIA — The recovering drug addict with a long rap sheet who had just sat down on the bench at a north Philadelphia train station often wondered if he was a good person, and perhaps never considered that anyone thought he was a hero to anybody. AP Photo/Philadelphia Daily News, Brian X. McCrone Christopher Knafelc, who rescued a man who had fallen off the platform in a north Philadelphia subway station, is photographed during an interview in a transit police office in Philadelphia. Knafelc, 32, jumped down onto the tra...

Malta came to Havre on Tuesday night, and gave the Havre High boys basketball team a tough night at home. The Central A Blue Ponies hosted the Class B Mustangs at the Havre High gymnasium, but suffered a severe loss to the defending Class B state champions. Malta defeated Havre 59-30 as the Ponies overall record dropped to 3-11. Havre High's Kody Hickman, left, makes a pass during Tuesday night's high school boys basketball game between the Blue Ponies and the Class B Malta Mustangs at the HHS gymnasium. The Mustangs beat...

  • Hi-Line Athlete Profile: Alfie Miller, MSU-N Basketball

    George Ferguson

Alfie Miller is Northern's latest 3-point sensation The 3-point shot has been a consistent part of the Montana State University-Northern Lights' offense for quite some time now. But when the back-to-back Frontier Conference champion Lights graduated a bevy of talented shooters last spring, questions surrounding who was going to make three's for the Lights surfaced. Enter junior sharp-shooter Alfie Miller. The 5-11 shooting guard from Seattle, Wash., came to Northern from Mount...

  • Reform may bring sales tax to Montana businesses

    Zach White

Colleen Rast has run an ebay store out of the Kalispell area for more than a decade. It had grown enough that, when the economic downturn took her husband's job a few years ago, she turned Great Sky Gifts pro, for some more income. She has since hired two employees and rents a warehouse space to handle all her merchandise, but she fears that new tax laws gaining momentum in Washington could halt her business' growth. Montanans are some of the most fortunate Americans for many reasons, including the freedom from sales taxes. B...

  • Warburton: Busy week ahead in Helena

    Tim Leeds

Rep. Wendy Warburton, R-Chinook, said during a legislative video conference in Havre that hearings are coming up in the next week on several bills of local interest and invited people to come to Helena to testify on the bills or submit written comments. One is on a topic of recent high interest on the Hi-Line: relations between Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks and landowners. Warburton said the bill would direct FWP — and invite landowners and landowner groups — to come before the interim committee between legislative ses...

  • Jergeson: Northern's auto-diesel prospects look good

    Tim Leeds

A local legislator said during a video conference Tuesday that it sounds like prospects for a new building at the local university looked good after a hearing on the state bonding bill. Sen. Greg Jergeson, D-Chinook, said legislators and people testifying seem to support building a new facility at Montana State University-Northern to house its diesel, automotive and farm mechanics programs. "The word I got is it was a great hearing (Monday) …, " he said. "There wasn't anybody that seemed to have any quibbles about the p...

There are many obstacles that people involved in rural health care have to overcome. Getting patients to health care services can be the biggest problems When people live in rural Malta, it's not easy finding friends or family who can drop everything to get to Havre. There have been a few advances in providing transportation in rural areas, but for the most part, it's not easy getting to and from health care. The problem becomes more severe when you are poor. And people who have illnesses often end up being poor. A group of p...

  • Things start to pick up in state Capitol

    State Sen. Greg Jergeson

Earlier this week, I had the opportunity to share breakfast with two groups of amazing young leaders: Montana 4-H, and the Young Stockgrowers of Montana. I'm proud to say the Young Stockgrowers had a formidable north-central Montana delegation. I appreciated the chance to listen to their fresh perspectives, and plans for their futures. Talking to them was a great reminder of what I heard when I knocked on doors and talked to community members last summer. The legislative session is about getting things done for Montanans,...

  • Legislature should state suicide isn't legal

    Tristan

Editor: I am confused by the ongoing dispute about whether we should legalize assisted suicide in Montana. I am a medical doctor whose patients include incarcerated persons. Law enforcement, jails and prisons are mandated to monitor for signs of depression and suicidal ideation and to identify, intervene and/or initiate treatment. We are told that our failure to do so would be a significant breach of an inmate's civil rights. Yet according to proponents of assisted suicide, patients also have a right to receive a doctor's...

  • Montana high school speakers are a source of inspiration

    Tristan

I was lucky enough to be a judge Saturday at the state Class A Speech, Debate and Drama championships held at Havre High School. That's because my colleague Tim Leeds, also the assistant debate HHS debate coach, invited anyone he knew, ran into on the street or had the email address of to show up for the tournament. It takes quite a number of volunteer judges to put on the event. Those who turned down the offer to be a judge missed an opportunity for a lot of inspiration. These were the state finals, so my fellow judges and...

  • Montana lawmaker offers pain instead of prison

    MATT GOURAS,Associated Press

HELENA (AP) — A Montana lawmaker says convicts should be allowed to get out of prison time if they instead agree to the "infliction of physical pain" — an idea that so far is receiving a cool reception. Republican Rep. Jerry O'Neil is drafting a bill that would allow those convicted of misdemeanors or felonies to negotiate corporal punishment instead of another sentence. The method used to inflict the pain would be decided by a judge. The veteran lawmaker said Wednesday that he thinks long prison sentences are inhumane. "Te...
