The Hill County Commission had a long discussion in a working meeting Monday about how to better engage with the public and keep them informed of the county’s dealings, as well as the possible implications of a road name change. The conversation about public relations was prompted by a letter from Montana Department of Transportation Havre Area Senior Engineer Project Manager Mike Moore, which said he was doing a survey in preparation for a presentation he will soon make. Among the survey questions was one about how the c...

If you asked my husband why his wife volunteers, his answer would be "Because she doesn't know how to say 'No.'" Honestly, I have thought about that for a long time. But it isn't the same as you might think. Frankly, I can't say "No, thanks" because I am compelled as a Christian to be the hands and feet of Jesus. Would Jesus say "No, thanks" to being the dean for Children's Camp? Would Jesus say "No, thanks" to working at the local museum to preserve our local history for...

My husband, Peter, and I spend the winters in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. The center of the town is a designated World Heritage Site, which means the facades of the buildings must remain as they were in the mid-1700s. The streets are made of round and sometimes slippery cobblestones. The doors are stout and covered with hundreds of coats of paint, and on the top of every building is a rooftop terrace where people can watch the fireworks that go off for no reason that anyone has ever been able to figure out. It is...

I just finished “Democracy in America,” which is a book by a Frenchman named Alexis de Tocqueville on… well, it’s in the title. To write this book, Tocqueville and his friend Gustave de Beaumont, who was the Dr. Watson of the duo, only without a mustache, sailed to the United States to check out its capital attractions. Not McDonald’s. Prisons. These two splendid gents got the French government to sponsor their jaunt across the Atlantic by promising they’d bring back loads of stuff on prisons. Wouldn’t you know, the plo...

This may only be my second local golf report of 2024, but it's one I've been thinking about for quite some time. And it's with a heavy heart I write this few words. However, I feel beyond compelled to do so. This column is dedicated to Dave Greenwood. We lost Dave this past winter. And for me, Dave's passing stirred many emotions and many memories, as I'm sure it did for many of you. Many of you will remember Dave for his long-standing association with Northern Montana...
