  • Sweep: Blue Ponies rip Browning

    Daniel Horton

When the Browning Indians came to town on Friday, the Havre High softball team did exactly what it expected to do — win. The Blue Ponies and Indians faced off in a Central A conference doubleheader on Friday at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field in Havre, where the Havre's Paige Henderson ducks a pitch during Friday's Central A doubleheader between Havre and Browning at the Sixth Avenue Memorial Field. Havre swept the Indians. Ponies earned two more conference wins, making it three on the season. The Ponies won the first game 1...

  • Montana needs to end oil, gas holiday

    Lana Sangmeister

Editor: It's disappointing that the Legislature tabled Senate Bill 295 — the bill to repeal the oil and gas tax holiday. Had it passed, the bill would have provided millions in new revenue to communities in eastern Montana that are facing major infrastructure expenses due to the oil boom. Now, instead of generating new funds to address the impacts, the Legislature is moving forward proposals that raid the general fund. All of the remaining bills that are still moving forward take this approach. Why are we giving the oil a...

  • Agreement with Sivertsen over Legislature

    Tristan

Editor: For one of the first times in north-central Montana, the vast majority of the Democrats I talked to in the last couple of days agree nearly 100 percent with the opinion Bob Sivertsen expressed in his column, the Legislature needs to join the 21st century. The current Montana legislative session has become such a joke that it has gained national attention, Chris Matthews, on his interview show on MSNBC, expressed the widespread view that the current legislature in Montana sets a new standard of what Matthews calls...

  • Remembrance of things past

    Sondra Aashton

When I was 7 years old, somewhat of a lost child, uncertain about every aspect of my life, my Indiana cousin Shirley, two years older, took me under wing. Shirley spoke with firm confidence and sureness, always. She quickly became my mentor, my hero. For the next five years she was my best friend. Then my family moved to Montana. Shirley and I wrote frequent letters until she left for college. Over the years and over the miles, our lives split onto widely divergent pathways Sondra Ashton At previous reunions, we had...

  • When online 'activism' meets the real world

    Caleb Hutchins

Something happened on Facebook on Tuesday. You may have seen some of your friends changing their profile picture to a pink equality sign on a red background. That image symbolizes support for marriage equality this week as the United States Supreme Court hears a couple of major cases regarding gay marriage. Hundreds of thousands of people on Facebook are sporting the image; it's gone viral. I don't usually go along with sharing popular Facebook trends — the site is filled with chainmail-style urban legends, hoaxes and t...

  • Our View: Making a point on immigration with humor

    Tristan

Sometimes humor is the best way to make a point. Thus was the case in the Montana Senate Wednesday. Republican members proposed a plan to enforce the successful referendum held in November to place severe limits on employment of illegal aliens. The GOP offered serious discussion on the need for such restrictions. The aliens might take jobs from Montanans. There ought to be a solid law to prevent people from entering the United States illegally. Every nation has a right and a duty to protect its borders. Democrats responded....

  • Judge blocks part of voter-approved immigrant law

    MATT VOLZ Associated Press

HELENA — A Montana judge has blocked part of a voter-approved law that requires proof of citizenship or legal standing to receive state services, but he left most of it intact to "preserve the intent of the people." The law approved overwhelmingly by voters in November requires a person to provide proof that he or she is eligible for services from unemployment benefits to crime-victim assistance. Immigration-rights attorneys challenged the law in December, saying Legislative Referendum 121 violated constitutional rights to pr...

  • House advances Kris Hansen plan to simplify income taxes

    Matt Gouras

HELENA — A plan to simplify income taxes was endorsed in the Montana House on Thursday as lawmakers continued to advance plans aimed at reducing taxes. House Bill 581 would reduce the seven different rates that range from 1 percent to 6.9 percent, and replace them with three rates ranging from 1 percent to 6 percent. The measure would also abolish most state credits and deductions. It was endorsed in a 67-33 initial vote in the House, even though it would get rid of credits dealing with everything from adoption to energy e...

  • George Ferguson Column: Plenty of memories from winter

    George Ferguson

Spring is in the air. Kind of. And while I'm not fooled into thinking old man winter won't return at some point over the next few weeks, or even the next two months, the fact is the days are getting longer and warmer. And for me, that doesn't just spell the beginning of tennis season, or the spring sports season in general, or even a chance to dust off the golf clubs, it also means it's time to put the winter sports season in my rear view mirror. George Ferguson Spors Editor...

  • Havre thinclads debut today in Cut Bank

    Daniel Horton

The beginning of a spring sports season is typically hit and miss with the continuously changing weather. But with nothing but blue skies and moderate temperatures set for the remainder of this week, it looks like the Havre High track teams will get the season started without a hitch. Today, the Central A Blue Ponies will compete in Cut Bank at the Cut Bank Time Trials. Last season poor weather caused the season starting event to be canceled, but with that behind them, the Ponies are excited about getting this season...

  • Ponies begin a new era on the diamond

    Daniel Horton

It is safe to say that the way the Havre High softball team ended its season a year ago was less than desirable. Now, heading into a new season with a brand new head coach, lots of returning players, and a handful of new talent, the Central A Blue Ponies could be primed to have one of their best seasons since the 2009-2010 season, the last time the Ponies reached the Class A state tournament. Last season the Ponies missed out on the state tournament due to a lost coin flip. The Ponies and Livingston Rangers were tied for...

But, despite the outpouring of support in the national competition that ran from last Thursday...

  • Blue Pony girls take to the big stage

    Daniel Horton

A state tournament berth is the goal for every prep basketball team at the start of a new season. Once there, the new goal becomes to win a state title, a task the Havre High girls basketball team has a shot at accomplishing for the first time since the 1997 season when the Blue Ponies knocked off Dillon 62-43 in the Class A state championship game. Jump ahead to the 2013 season, and the Central A Ponies (13-7) can hopefully find similar results this weekend at the Butte Civic Center in Butte. Havre High's Peyton Filius and...

  • Slurry of local bills involved in legislative transmittal

    Tim Leeds

Local lawmakers saw some success — and some failure — by today's transmittal deadline at the Montana Legislature, and will have the chance to talk about the session at a special meeting in Havre starting at 6 tonight. Today was the last day to transmit general bills from one house to the other. If a bill not dealing with appropriations or revenue — or a resolution or propoal for an interim study — was not passed by this morning, generally it is dead for the session. The legislators, who are now taking a short mid-sea...

  • Polson man pleads guilty to 9th DUI

    Tristan

POLSON (AP) — A 45-year-old Polson man who drove his car into Flathead Lake in an attempt to elude police has pleaded guilty to his ninth DUI. Todd Burland entered his plea Wednesday before District Judge C.B. McNeil. Burland was arrested on Nov. 5 after officers pulled him out of the lake and into a rescue boat. Stevens says officers responded to a report that a vehicle was high-centered, but when officers arrived the vehicle was driving away. Officers pursued the vehicle as it drove through a park and into the lake. O...

  • UM makes some Mansfield speeches available online

    MARTIN KIDSTON, Missoulian

MISSOULA (AP) — On May 22, 1970, a Carroll College graduate sat down with pen and paper and considered the draft, his future at Notre Dame and his reluctance to serve in the Vietnam War. He directed his letter to U.S. Sen. Mike Mansfield, asking for help, and waited for a response. Six days later Mansfield replied. He expressed his apologies for the situation in which the young man found himself, and vowed to continue his fight to end the draft and the war in Vietnam. "For my part, as you know, I voted against the e...

  • Lights gun for hardware in Iowa

    George Ferguson

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling doesn't have a senior. The Lights, at least by grade, aren't what you'd call a veteran team. But none of that means much as Northern heads to the NAIA national tournament this weekend. Nine Lights will converge on Des Moines, Iowa for the biggest wrestling meet of their lives. The NAIA national tournament gets under way Friday morning and runs through Saturday night, and though the Lights don't have a huge contingent, they do...
