Some Havre residents would like to see the city allow them to raise chickens in their yards. So far, it looks like the city is reluctant to do that. Havre resident Jacob Lorang said he is considering bringing chickens onto his property, but a city ordinance forbids people from having nondomesticated animals. He said that about 10 people he knows of already have chickens on their property, and city officials are turning their heads the other way. Lorang is asking supporters of pro-chicken laws to gather at the Havre-Hill...

The numerous construction projects in the city of Havre and the surrounding area may show hope for forward progress for an area that has experienced some weakening population numbers. When I moved from Montana to the Seattle area in 1984, not my first relocation by any means, I knew it would take a while to develop friendships. Two years later, coffee outings with a couple of women eventually led to trips to Seattle for the symphony or Elliott Bay Books with Lynn and to picnics or family dinners with Karen, who also had children. A couple more years and I had many friends; men, women, couples and singles. Friendships take time to develop. I sorted through a...

The 2014-15 high school basketball season has been anything but normal for the student-athletes, parents, coaches and fans of Fort Benton and Geraldine high schools. In fact, at times it has been downright strange with the uniform swaps and nickname changes on a nightly basis. But that's to be expected after an emergency co-op. Entering the season, Fort Benton was already undergoing some changes. The former Class B power was getting ready for its first season in the District...
By Bruce Auchly FWP Region 4 Information Officer We come to praise starlings, not bury them. Say, what? Praise starlings? Perchance love them? That's right. And why not, William Shakespeare mentioned the species, if not admired the birds' ability to mimic sounds. In fact, it's thought the starling is in North America only because of Shakespeare. But we'll get back to the Bard in a moment. First, let's look at the starling. Or close your eyes, if you must, for love looks not...
