She was born to Andy and Annie Sunderlang Johnson on March 21, 1927, at home in Osnabrock, N.D., during a blizzard. Arlette graduated from schools in Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana. She picked potatoes for high school clothes as well. During WWII, Arlette worked in a defense plant in Tacoma, Wash.
