Sen. Jonathan Windy Boy’s proposal to increase the minimum wage to $10.10 in Montana is creating quite a stir in Helena, even if, as one lobbyist said, “it doesn’t stand a snowball’s chance in hell of being approved.” The bill will go before the Senate’s Business and Labor Committee Wednesday morning. There, lobbyists and people will be given a chance to speak about the proposal. Windy Boy sent out a mass email this weekend urging people he suspects will support the bill, SB2, to come out and speak. Windy Boy, D-Box Elder...
I’m glad to see an increased effort on anti-bullying campaigns in area schools and youth organizations. It was a long time coming. Havre Public Schools and most schools in the area, the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Line, Scout groups and many others are putting emphasis on the long-range effects of being bullied. All of this is a little bit late for a girl I went through high school with. Sheila, I’ll call her, was not especially attractive, a bit overweight and may have had some minor psychological problems going into jun...
Bear Paw Ski Bowl had its opening day Saturday and more than 100 skiers and snowboarders visited it to test the new snow. "Opening day's been really good," said Dave Martens, the mountain manager. "We had three inches of old snow and three and a half inches of new snow with an 18- to probably 36-inch base." The lift has two stops, Martens said. The halfway stop allows skiers to take the more intermediate and beginner-level courses, while the last stop at the top of the...

Havre city government is launching an effort to separate storm water from its sewer system. If the city is successful, it will result in considerable savings on sewer bills, Mayor Tim Solomon said. Lots of ground water that does not have to go through the expensive treatment that sewage must undergo is seeping into the sewer system, he said. The effort is being undertaken in conjunction with the federally mandated upgrades to the city’s wastewater treatment plant, he said. Bids will be opened on the project in two weeks, he s...

Except perhaps there have been fewer accidents and near misses. Now, state Rep. Virginia Court, D-Billings, is proposing that the ban be made statewide. It’s becoming cliché, but there’s no denying the Montana State University-Northern Skylights are having a dream season. The win took the No. 11 Skylights to a perfect 4-0 start to Frontier Conference play, while improving them to a stellar 19-1 overall. And while the final score was a bit lopsided, the Ba...
The Havre High swim teams are certainly familiar with the pool at the Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls. After all, the Blue Ponies spend a lot of their time their during the season. And they made good use of their experience in the pool at this weekend’s Great Falls Invitational. CMR and Bo...
It was a busy weekend for the Glacier Nationals as they played three straight games against three of the toughest teams in the Frontier Division of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League. And while the Nationals have played better of late, they were not quite up to par against some high-level competition. The weekend started Friday night at the Havre Ice Dome against first-place Great Falls. The Americans, who have dominated the Frontier this season, continued that...

Yet, the Indians had other ideas and ended up narrowly defeating No. 3 Havre 62-59. Havre got an...
Outside of the state wrestling meet, there may not be any meet in the state of Montana that compares to the Jug Beck Rocky Mountain Classic. The field is outstanding and Havre head coach Scott Filius even said recently, the competition was tougher than what would be found at state. That’s part of what makes Havre’s first-place finish this past weekend in Missoula so impressive. The Blue Ponies used a total of five finalists to score a total of 219.5 points, 21 more than tha...
If there was any doubt about who is the best girls basketball team in the Central A Conference, the Havre Blue Ponies put it to rest this past weekend. The Ponies, who had won three straight entering Friday’s game against Browning, took care of the Indians, in a battle of unbeaten Central A teams inside the HHS gymnasium. It was a back and forth battle but thanks to some outstanding defense and clutch shooting, HHS came out on top by the score of 61-52. “It definitely put...
