The return of cold and snow has continued poor driving conditions in the area, with highways in this regions listed as having snow and ice, even some black ice, and driving in towns still a problem in some areas despite work to remove snow and ice. Travis M. Sheffelmaer of Dodson died following a crash on U.S. Highway 2 in Blaine County of injuries unrelated to the crash, which is still under investigation, Blaine County Sheriff John Colby said in a press release. Down in Whitefish this past weekend, the Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team played a pair of games against the Flathead Fusion. Over the weekend, the Ice Hawks had their ups and downs against the Fusion. The Ice Hawks started the weekend Saturday with a 4-3 loss to the Fusion before bouncing back Sunday with a 4-1 victory. John Joseph Shidu, 95, passed away peacefully January 6, 2023. John, or Papa, was born in Helena, MT, March 3, 1927, to Mary (Stariha) Shidu and John Shidu. He grew up and went to high school in Helena. As a young man, he worked at the Helena brickyard for Archie Bray. Jarold Ernest Schmidt, 83, was born to Ernest and Verla Delight Schmidt of Bowman, ND, in 1939. Relocating to Lewistown, MT, in Jarold's childhood the family helped farm the PN Ranch. As we started the second week of legislative session, things were still a bit unsettled. By Wednesday, I could see where a theme was starting to form. Most of the bills that were being presented were what are called “agency bills.” The governor has asked for a law cleansing, or purge, of outdated language in Montana law. I almost threw away my old lace napkins. They have rust stains on them. In order to cover the stains, I threw them in a pot of green dye and boiled them. The dye was not a success. The napkins all came out in slightly varying shades of green, and the rust stains — while less noticeable — were still there.
