There's a lot of pageantry, a lot of excitement and even some distractions that come with reaching the NAIA national basketball tournament. For many teams, it's out of the normal routine in which they are accustomed to. But tonight in Kansas City, all that will go away for the Montana State University-Northern Lights, and all that's left is 40 minutes of basketball. The 19th-ranked Lights (24-8) finally open play at the 75th NAIA national tournament tonight at 8:45 M.S.T. against 13th-ranked and 13th-seeded Biola University...
Flood advisory upgraded to warning in Hill, Blaine counties The National Weather Service has upgraded the flood advisory it issued earlier this week to a flood warning for Hill and Blaine counties "until further notice." The warning means that flooding is imminent or has already been reported. Hill County's Disaster and Emergency Services Coordinator Joe Parenteau said that it was changed since some county roads have flooded, including at least one north of Rudyard and south of Havre, near Beaver Creek Road and Laredo Road...
Push still on to fund Northern biodiesel research Tim Leeds Local legislators said the chance still is strong — and they are pursuing many avenues — to restore funding for Montana State University-Northern's biodiesel research program. Andrew Brekke of Havre thanked and congratulated Reps. Wendy Warburton and Kris Hansen, who were at the legislative video conference in Havre Wednesday, and Rep. Tony Belcourt, who did not attend, for their attempt to restore $400,000 for the program that was cut from the governor's proposed bu...
Two local legislators said Wednesday they plan to vote against a bill that would repeal capital punishment in Montana. "I definitely will vote against getting rid of the death penalty in Montana," Rep. Wendy Warburton, R-Havre, said from Helena during a weekly video conference in Havre. The bill, which narrowly passed the Senate on a 26-24 vote, replaces the death penalty with life in prison without parole. Warburton said the bill strikes out every instance of the death in the law. "So you would never be able to execute...
A discussion in a legislative video conference of the state budget passed by the Montana Legislature led to a harsh discussion of some of the cuts in the budget. During this week's video conference, held at noon each Wednesday in the Robins School Administration Building, Rep. Kris Hansen, R-Havre, said the budget is the result of trying to offset one-time funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, dealing with projected revenue and looking at the effectiveness of long-time programs. "(The budget is) going to...
Reps. say med pot repeal still has chance Tim Leeds Local legislators say a bill, sponsored by Speaker of the House Mike Milburn, R-Cascade, which would repeal Montana's medical marijuana laws still has a chance. The bill stalled in a Senate committee when it failed to move to the floor on a 6-6 vote. Rep. Wendy Warburton, R-Havre, said at the Wednesday video conference in Havre the bill could be reconsidered in the committee, and it could be blasted out of committee with a simple majority vote. Warburton said the committee...
How I lost my sense of humor, and how I got it back Sondra Ashton My world looked gray. My bank balance hovered near empty. My refrigerator was bare. My various aches and pains would, no doubt, be revealed as a fatal disease. Winter had dug in its claws and was hanging on tenaciously. Flood waters were rising. News was grim. All over the world, the nation, the state, our town and in my house, things were falling apart. I was in a blue funk. I realized my sense of humor was...
House passes lean budget Wendy Warburton This week the Montana House passed our budget bill, House Bill 2. This forms the basis for Montana's budget for the next two years. Passing a balanced budget is the one constitutional duty of the Legislature, and one that I take seriously. The initial budget, proposed by the governor before the legislative session, was not balanced. It would have spent more money than nonpartisan projections say that our state will take in. Growing government and raiding our savings account is not resp...
Officials should follow American values, not party values Editor: I read the letter from Mr. Kuntz and have a problem. His main thesis is that we as Republicans have lost our way. I feel that we as Americans have lost our way. We rely on others to do a job that we do not want to do and then complain about the way it is done. I personally feel we have way too many Republicans, Democrats, tea partyers, green partyers, and whatever partyers and not enough Americans in public office. Mr. Kuntz states that Republicans are...

Montana Senate GOP moves to tilt environmental law HELENA — Senate Republicans are moving forward with their plan to tilt the state's main environmental law in favor of industry, despite objections from Democrats that the plan undermines key protections for clean air and water. The Senate endorsed in a 27-23 late afternoon vote a general revision of the Montana Environmental Policy Act after making some changes aimed at reducing the cost to state regulators. It had already received one favorable vote last month, before GOP l...

The U.S. attorney's office says 24-year-old Hussein Abdi Hassan of Minneapolis was arraigned by U.S. Magistrate Judge Robert Holter in Great Falls on Thursday. An Amtrak spokesman has said Hassan was removed from the Empire Builder train in Browning on Feb. 14 f...
HELENA — The commissioner of political practices is reviewing a complaint over Attorney General Steve Bullock's move to raise campaign cash without stating which office he seeks. But the ethics chief says the office historically has not had any problem with the practice prior to the filing deadline, which in this case is next year. Bullock is mulling a possible run for governor instead of seeking another term as attorney general while he raises campaign cash. His campaign finance forms filed with the state show he is r...

It's been a season of highs and lows for the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team. And right now, the Skylights are trying to come back up from a low. Northern enters this weekend's road trip at Rocky Mountain College, tonight in Billings and Carroll College, Saturday night in Helena, coming off a rare two-game home stand in which the Skylights were swept on their home floor. And with how difficult the Frontier is on a nightly basis, getting back up from that low won't be easy, especially against two...
The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team is ranked higher than any other Frontier Conference team right now. And the No. 16 Lights are alone atop the conference standings. But if one lesson has been learned through 10 league games this season, it's that things can change in a hurry. And that's what the Lights (18-7, 7-3) will try to guard against when they take on league foes Rocky Mountain College tonight in Billings and Carroll College Saturday in Helena. The Lights may be on top of the Frontier right...

Five teams, only one semifinal and just three days, that's the new-look District 9C girls basketball tournament. But this year's version, which kicks off tonight at 5 at the Havre High gymnasium will be just as intense as any. And although the 9C has changed over time, the excitement and the level of basketball hasn't. The 2011 9C girls tournament will feature some of the best basketball teams in the area, and it starts with the Box Elder Bears (17-1), who have a chance to repeat as district champions this weekend. Box...
Hutton, Jergeson spar on eminent domain Tim Leeds A current and a former state senator took opposing positions on a bill that would give the state authority to take land from the federal government using eminent domain. Greg Jergeson of Chinook, a former Democratic state senator and chair of the state Public Service Commission, told Sen. Rowlie Hutton, R-Havre, that Hutton's bill could have "dire financial consequences" for Hi-Line farmers and ranchers, as well as overstepping the bounds of the Montana Constitution. Hutton,...
Modified animal laws reviewed Zach White A new version of the animal ordinances, offered by Mayor Tim Solomon and based on suggestions by a group of city employees, entered consideration at Tuesday's Ordinance Committee meeting. Several changes, from merging sections to changing some specific wording within those sections, were suggested as improvements over the version approved by the Havre City Council in October. The committee spent months last year looking at making changes, combining previously separate ordinances for...
Business license has a quick funeral in committee Zach White The business license was buried further by the city's Ordinance Committee at its meeting on Tuesday night. The committee voted unanimously to "indefinitely postpone" the idea. Committee Chair Andrew Brekke said that anyone could bring it back if they wanted, but this committee is done with it. Committee member Pam Hillery grinned and added that the committee would wait until their terms are over. Both Hillery's and Brekke's Havre City Council seats are up in this...
