  • Letter to the Editor - Sanctioning ICC on Netanyahu is wrong

    Updated Jan 16, 2025

Editor, The U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation to sanction the International Criminal Court for issuing arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. Montana Reps. Troy Downing and Ryan Zinke both voted in support of this bill. Zinke calls the Court a “corrupt international body.” However, in its statement regarding these warrants, the ICC contends that there is reasonable evidence to conclude that Netanyahu and Gallant “intentionally and knowi...

  • Celebrating History: Filling the ice box

    Updated Jan 16, 2025

By Emily Mayer January is a time to wind down after a busy holiday season, and many take vacations this time of year, mostly to warmer climates. Some people a century ago did the same, and this article was found in the January 11, 1925, edition of The Havre Daily Promoter. ST. GERMAIN GOING ON VISIT My ice season will be through next week, 1600 tons in. I am leaving the last part of this month for a trip. If any one has any account against me bring your bill right away. • Looking out my Backdoor: How we see ourselves

    Sondra Ashton|Updated Jan 16, 2025

Every time I thought of my cousin, who had just had heart surgery, I found myself angry. I mean spitting angry, upset, because it seemed the man was not taking care of himself, was ignoring the sensible cautions, being a he-man gorilla, invincible. Finally, after a full couple of weeks of growling, I asked myself, “Why so angry?” Well, that question stopped me in my tracks. After some deep digging through my own rubble heap of rationalizations, I realized that I was afraid. I...

  • Resist GOP attack on your courts & constitution

    Updated Jan 16, 2025

The legislative GOP misleadingly calls the twenty-seven draft bills they passed through their partisan judiciary attack committee “judicial reform.” The news media has echoed that term in their reporting. That’s sad, because saying “reform” implies that the bills will make our judiciary better. Rather, the bills are a partisan attack designed to weaken the judiciary — make it more partisan, less independent and substantially subservient to the GOP legislative majority. Montana’s government and Constitution are based on our...

  • Out Our Way: "The Gift"

    Updated Jan 16, 2025

Ephesians 2:8 "For by grace you have been saved by faith - it is not your own doing but the gift of God." Out our way, especially for "dust eaters" riding behind the herd as we moved them to better grazing lands, the "silk" scarf was essential. It wasn't really silk, but it wasn't a cheap cotton "bandana" you see in stores. Great for blowing your nose, but not much use in cutting the dust. While riding with Charlie up on the Tiger Ridge, I had a black one that did the job for...

  • The Postscript: At home with Felix

    Carrie Classon|Updated Jan 16, 2025

It’s been a big year for our cat, Felix. Sometime in late 2023, Felix was scooped up off the street in Mexico by a teenager and brought to the home of her mother and aunt. I’m not sure how he was received when he arrived. They already had 11 dogs, at least a couple of cats and several birds. They gave him food and a home, and I imagine the teenager, Daniela, thought that the fostering arrangement would eventually become permanent. But that’s not what happened. Danie...

  • Pastor's Corner: Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

    Updated Jan 16, 2025

An annual event that our ministerial association sponsors each January is the "Week of Prayer for Christian Unity." This year we have decided to change it up. Instead of meeting at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast & devotions, we are meeting each day at 12:00 noon for lunch & devotions. Instead of meeting at St....
