  • Celebrating History: Historic buildings and 'The Social Whirl'

    Updated Jan 16, 2015

Emily Mayer For this third installment of the Year of the Buildings, I found this curious article in the Jan. 16, 1914 issue of The Hill County Democrat. A couple of years ago, a friend asked me if I knew anything about Havre pianos. He said a relative of his had a piano that said "Havre, Montana" on it. I said I didn't' know anything about it. This article might have something to do with it, so Randy and Laura Martin, this one is for you: MANUFACTURER'S AGENT LOCATED IN...

  • Our View: Hi-Line darts and laurels

    Updated Jan 16, 2015

Dart — Some fool thought it would be fun to call a bomb threat into Havre High School Wednesday. The threat caused all kinds of problems to the school district, disrupted the education and activities for students and caused undue alarm to parents. Havre police had to drop what they were doing and oversee operations at the scene. Havre police hope they will find the responsible person. We hope courts deal with the guilty party severely. Everything went well Wednesday, but with all that kind of unexpected activity taking p...

  • View from the North 40

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 16, 2015

It’s no secret. I’ve discussed this openly, even here in my column: One of the great ironies in the history of the world, or my own life — whichever is greater — is that I have to read the news every weekday morning. That is so depressing. You just don’t know. I’m forced to do it, actually, for a paycheck. It’s like I’ve prostituted myself — figuratively speaking, because if I had to earn a living as, you know, an employee of the oldest profession, I would go broke and starve...

  • Hi-Line Living: Blind on the Hi-Line

    Tori Thomas|Updated Jan 16, 2015

Sight. It is a sense that most people take for granted. However, not everyone can fully see their surroundings, and these individuals are forced to adapt to life’s wonders in a variety of different ways — these individuals happen to be blind. There are many variations of blindness, ranging from legally blind, which means one’s best-seeing eye cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses to any better than 20/200, to total blindness, which means one has complete lack...

  • Pastor's column: Remember the sweetness in bittersweet

    Updated Jan 16, 2015

Linda Rose The church season is Epiphany — what was anticipated in Advent has been revealed and continues to be discovered in this season before Lent. Both Christmas and Epiphany are bittersweet for me. I’m very fond of bittersweet chocolate. It’s dark, it’s sweet and good but also bitter and hard. Life can be a lot like that, can’t it — bittersweet? The Christmas holiday can be bittersweet; we come to church on Christmas Eve for the sweet, the memories of past holidays, to hear the good news of Christ’s birth, the carols and...

  • Out Our Way: Cattle trails

    Updated Jan 16, 2015

John Bruington ACTS 7 Out our way cattle trails are pretty common. In a lot of ways it makes sense. Following each other and keeping the weeds and grass trampled down, it is easier going than breaking trail yourself. Old Goliath and I have “trailed” cattle out on Tiger Ridge in the Bear Paws and a few other places and we usually follow the cattle trail. But what do you do when the trail is blocked? Now and then there comes a time when you have to go off trail and do a little cross country riding. Charlie and I were wor...

  • Lights finally getting back on the mats

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 16, 2015

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team had a break planned for just before the holidays. But due to some foul weather, that break got much longer than Northern head coach Tyson Thivierge would have liked. Now however, the No. 3 Lights will look to shake off the rust at a tournament they’ve never been to before, and one that will feature some fierce NAIA competition. Today and Saturday, Northern will take part in the Missouri Valley College Invitational in M...

  • Bison pin Ponies

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 16, 2015

When the two premier wrestling programs in the state of Montana bump heads, it’s usually pretty entertaining. And that was the case Thursday night in Great Falls. However, for the Havre Blue Ponies, the fun was short-lived. The top-ranked Class A Ponies came out on the losing end of their high-profile dual with the top-ranked Class AA Great Falls High Bison Thursday night in Great Falls. In a dual that was much closer than the final score indicated, the Bison beat the P...

  • Busy weekend for improving Nationals

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 16, 2015

The Glacier Nationals may not have a shot of making the playoffs in the Frontier Division of the North American Tier 3 Hockey League, but that doesn’t mean they don’t have something to play for over the final month and a half of the 2014-15 season. The Nationals, who defeated the Yellowstone Quake 3-2 last Saturday for their sixth win of the season, are looking to build on that momentum and prove this weekend against three of the division’s top teams that they are bette...

  • Skylights beat Saints at the buzzer

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 16, 2015

There’s no doubt about it now — the Montana State University-Northern Skylights have something special going on. Northern became the only unbeaten team left in the Frontier Conference after senior A’Jha Edwards put back a Taylor Cummings miss with :02 left to lift the No. 11 Skylights to a thrilling 50-48 win over No. 19 Carroll College Thursday night in Helena. The win pushed MSU-N to 3-0 in the Frontier and an outstanding 18-1 overall. Northern will try for the road sweep...

  • Rivalry Weekend: HHS girls host Browning

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 16, 2015

The Havre High girls basketball team has a good blend of youth and experience. The experience has helped the Blue Ponies get off to a strong start, but the youth and the growth potential that comes with it is what gives the Ponies the chance to once again compete for the Class A state championship. This weekend will provide the Ponies with another opportunity to grow as they will be thoroughly tested in a pair of high-profile matchups against the Browning Indians and Rocky...

  • Rivalry Weekend: Blue Pony boys set for big road showdowns with Indians, Stars

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 16, 2015

The Havre Blue Ponies have been road warriors this season. Five of the HHS boys basketball team's first eight games have been on the road, and after two more this weekend that will make it seven of 10. But for the Ponies, who have won four of five road games this season, and play at Browning tonight at 7, and in Rocky Boy Saturday at 6:30 p.m., it doesn’t matter who or where they play, the mentality is always the same — win. “With this group of boys they just do what it takes...
