There was no Brawl of the Wild in November. And there won't be a special edition in March either. On Friday morning, the University of Montana and Montana State University jointly opted out of the special, 6-game Big Sky Conference spring season, which was set to begin next month. Instead, both schools are hoping to play a pair of exhibition, or non-conference games as part of traditional spring football practice, which won't begin until March. The press release from...
It's been a rough start to the 2021 Frontier Conference women's basketball season for the Montana State University-Northern Skylights. In just one week, the Skylights suffered four losses between home games against Carroll College and road contests at Montana Western. The good news is, though, the Skylights (0-4, 1-7) get to start all over this weekend, and they get to do it at home. Saturday night and Sunday, Northern will take on upstart Montana Tech (3-5, 3-5) inside the...
There weren't many people picking Montana State University-Northern junior wrestler Nick Kunz to win the NAIA 125-pound national championship back in March. Kunz, though, believed otherwise. And in the end, that belief got him to where he is today, a senior at Northern, and a defending NAIA national champion. Kunz, a Helena native, had a 2019-2020 season he'll never forget, and for his triumph back in March he was selected as the Havre Daily News Male Athlete of the Year. "It...

Out our way, I found working cattle was a lot different from what I grew up seeing on TV. Of course, there is a difference between trailing cattle hundreds of miles and simply moving a herd from one pasture to another, but some things I suspect were the same. Quiet herding was better than being loud and noisy. I have written about my first round up in Wyoming when we were gathering cow/calf units for the branding. Things were going smoothly until the owner of the herd drove...
This next work week, Monday-Friday, Jan. 18-22, the Greater Havre Area Ministerial Association - G.H.A.M.A. - will be leading our community in observing the "Week of Prayer for Christian Unity." You know, Lord, as a child, I can imagine that any one of us just loved it when our mom would read to us. We would sit on Mama's lap and listen to every word. As she read, we would examine the details of every picture and wait eagerly to hear what was on the next page. Did any of us ever think about the idea that our lives also tell a story? In every situation - good, bad, or indifferent - people around us are watching and listening to the story we are telling. Our story is...
