MSU-N spikers on a roll George Ferguson, [email protected] If Thursday night's win at Montana Tech wasn't big enough, the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team kept the amazing start to the season rolling. On Friday night in Dillon, the Skylights dominated the UM-Western Bulldogs in a three-game sweep to improve to 2-0 in the Frontier Conference. The Skylights beat the Bulldogs by scores of 25-18, 25-20 and 25-14, and are tied atop the league standings with Lewis-Clark State. This is not only the first...
Last Friday, Mr. Thackeray provided us with yet another letter to the editor regarding the graduation prayer at Montana State University-Northern. In it he trotted out the tired notion that prayers can be censored by Big Brother. The core of his defense is the desire for people to think that "freedom of religion" means instead "freedom from religion." It is a tiresome argument, but one that is being proffered with renewed tenacity. If you get a good enough echo chamber, people will accept an untruth as truth. Let history be...
Lately, I've had cause to wade in the deeper end of the intellectual puddle. Despite my preference for shallower thoughts, I've been contemplating more philosophical and theological topics than usual — searching for answers to the most profound question of all, the first question in a person's life and the first question in all the universe: Why? Specifically, I want to know: Why has all this stupid shinola been happening to me? Specificallier (and this only a partial list, from only the last two weeks): One of my horses k...

According to court documents, the gi r l was beaten and kicked by her father for about 20 minutes on Aug. 28, 2008, and Goodbear initially rejected efforts to seek medical help. Lyrik died at a Denver hospital. An autopsy found the girl died of blunt force trauma to the head,...

Thursday at the Prairie Farms Golf Course in Havre, the Blue Ponies participated in their first practice of the 2010 season. And Thursday's practice is the first of just three practices the Ponies will hold before participating in their first tournament of the season. This Tuesday, HHS will host their season opener at Prairie Farms. The final list of competitors won't be known until Monday, but the Ponies are...
A recently established program to identify contaminated properties in the first step toward getting them cleaned up and back into use is moving forward. Bear Paw Development Corp. is now working on six properties in its five-county region. Christin Hileman of Bear Paw Development, coordinator of its Brownfields Program, said more than 40 sites have been looked at, with six approved by the federal Environmental Protection Agency as sites eligible to be assessed under the program. "We looked at a lot of sites," Hileman said, ad...
"Happy Birthday" might not be a song that Jason Michael Carroll has recorded, but the country music star good-naturedly sang it to several fans during his concert at the Havre Ice Dome Thursday. He also performed his own hits, such as "Where I'm From," "Alyssa Lies," "Hurry Home" and "I Can Sleep When I'm Dead." In an earlier interview, Carroll said he sings songs that tell stories to which people can relate. The tunes struck a chord with Havre listeners, who danced to and sang along with many of the songs. Carroll has...

Unit Warden Lori Lieder and a unit security chief resigned earlier this week from Arizona State Prison at Kingman, said Carl Stuart, a spokesman for Management & Training Corporation, the private company that runs the state prison. The escape sparked criticism of security levels at the prison. John McCluskey, Tracy Province and Daniel Renwick e...

Under his earlier declaration, the president committed the government to paying 75 percent The Tribe would have had to pay...

After securing a new, tight-fitting cap on top of the leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico, BP prepared to begin tests today to see if it will hold and stop fresh oil from polluting the waters for the first time in nearly three months. The oil giant expects to know within 48 hours if the new cap, which was affixed Monday after almost three days of painstaking, around-the-clock work a mile below the Gulf's surface, can stanch the flow. The solution is only temporary, but it offers the best hope yet for cutting off the gush of bi...
NorthWestern Energy says its best option for supplying power to its customers over the next 20 years is to buy or build another natural gas-fired power plant so it can rely less on contracts with PPL Montana. NorthWestern filed its biennial electric supply plan with the s tate Publ ic Service Commission last week. The plan continues the company's efforts to rebuild itself as a utility that owns power generation, rather than a company that distributes electricity purchased from others at market prices. NorthWestern's plan also...
The BP oil disaster has been a divisive issue, but on one thing we're all pretty much agreed: President Obama doesn't give good mad. For week after week, critics from Sarah Palin to James Carville have been exhorting him to lose it, to scream and yell and get red in the face and set his hair on fire. This, they feel, would show that he really cares (as nothing he's done so far has). Well, he's tried. You have to give him that — he's tried. He's gone down to the Gulf Coast and met with citizens and spoken harsh words to BP, t...
The stretch run of the 2010 American Legion baseball season is officially here. And the Havre North Stars are hoping they've hit their stride at just the right time. The North Stars begin a stretch eight conference games this week today against Medicine Hat at Legion Field. The doubleheader with the Knights gets underway at 1. A Hill County commissioner took issue with parts of a new grazing policy for Beaver Creek Park during a meeting of the Hill County Park Board Monday. Commissioner Kathy Bessette said the commission believes two parts of the draft policies approved in a split vote by the board at its June meeting give the perception that the board is catering to ranchers in the Bear's Paw Mountains who already graze their cattle on the park. "We just don't feel that we can support some of the things that were brought forward from the grazing c...
Area children who received shots during the Lil Shots Carnival are more prepared to face the germs of the world. The carnival, sponsored by the Hill County Health Department and in its third year, sought to bring area youths' shot series up-to-date and educate people about the importance of vaccines, all while providing a fun atmosphere. Monty the Immunization Bear greeted children Friday morning in front of the health department, and the ambulance and fire truck also were big draws. Children who were up-to-date or whose...
With waters still rising from continued snowmelt in the Bear's Paw Mountains, the Hill County Commission is warning people on lower Beaver Creek that they are likely to see some flooding. Commissioner Mike Anderson said this morning that, due to rising levels in Beaver Creek Reservoir, about eight miles south of Havre, additional water is being released through the dam. That is increasing the level of Beaver Creek, already over its banks in some areas, between the dam and the Milk River. "There's no imminent danger at all,...
Campaigning in the Democratic primary has stepped up to a new level, with a former Hill County attorney backing her successor and raising questions about the qualifications of the opponents. Cyndee Peterson, who left the office of Hill County attorney in 2008 to take a job in Missoula with the state U.S. Attorney's Office, sent a letter to Hill County voters dated May 1. In the letter, Peterson wrote that she is endorsing Gina Dahl, who was appointed to replace her and is running to remain in the office. She also raised...
An investigator for the state Human Rights Bureau found reasonable cause that five Glacier County sheriff's deputies who are Caucasian were discriminated against when the county and the Blackfeet Tribe signed a cross-deputization agreement. A report by bureau investigator Ilka Becker said under the agreement, the Tribe commissioned Native American deputies who lived on the Blackfeet Indian Reservation, a Caucasian deputy married to a Native American and a black deputy to be Tribal officers, but not the other white deputies. A...
To the community of Havre, thank you so much for your unfailing support over the last four years. Whether I'm playing volleyball at the Havre High School gymnasium, competing in track, singing a solo at district music festival or performing on stage during musicals like "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat," great people from our town are present giving me and my classmates support and encouragement. I can only hope that the diehard Northern fans can forgive me for attending Carroll enough to attend some matches...
Back when I lived in the Windy City, I subscribed to the Chicago Tribune, called by its publisher, Colonel McCormick, the "World's Greatest Newspaper." In those days it listed further to the right than any newspaper in existence. This was the paper which ran the famous banner headline: "Dewey Defeats Truman." The Sunday edition was approximately four inches thick and so heavy I had to separate it and drag it into the house one section at a time. If I plunked the whole thing on the coffee table all at once, the legs splayed...

Karzai, meanwhile, will continue to seek to convince Americans that his regime is worth fighting and dying for, with a visit to Arlington National Cemetery and private talks with top lawmakers. After a Capitol Hill...
At the District 9C track meet, the boys battled back and forth for the lead all day. And after trailing North Star for a good portion of the afternoon, it was the Chinook Sugarbeeters who came out on top. On Wednesday, the Havre Middle School was the home of the District 9C track meet. And with 172 points, the Beeters grabbed the No. 1 spot. The North Star Knights were No. 2 with 150 points, while the Big Sandy Pioneers were No. 3 with 106. The Turner Tornadoes were fourth with 62 points and the Hays Lodge-Pole Thunderbirds...

Miller is slated to wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds for the Lights and will major in Civil Engineering while at MSUN. "Having a talent like Jared is going to help solidify our line-up." Thivierge said. "He is a terror on the mat, one who...
