  • A night to remember: Lights, Hawkeyes put on a great show

    George Ferguson|Updated Feb 13, 2016

HAVRE – If there was any doubt about the Iowa Hawkeyes intentions or their focus coming into their dual with NAIA power Montana State University-Northern Friday night, that doubt went out the window real quick. The Hawkeyes, the second-ranked team in the NCAA, and 2015 national runner's up, sent their top lineup to a sold-out Armory Gymnasium, and they came away with a 51-0 win in what was a historic night for the Lights, who are ranked third in the NAIA. • Clack Museum to be closed for a month

    John Kelleher|Updated Jan 12, 2016

The H, Earl Clack Memorial Museum will be closed from Saturday to Feb. 17 because of budgetary problems and to give volunteers a chance to clean up. Museum Board Chair Judi Dritshulas said the museum is running short on money. Cash-strapped Hill County commissioners, who provide some funding for the museum, are urging the museum to become self-funding by relying more on the museum’s foundation, she said. “That’s difficult to do when we are undertaking a pretty large project of our own,” she said, referring to the gradual...

  • Guest column: Hold 'Occupiers' accountable

    Updated Jan 12, 2016

When it comes to militia members taking over Oregon’s Malheur National Wildlife Range, many people are confused by what’s perceived as a random act, or they pass it off as the actions of some renegade kooks. It’s dangerous to minimize events through these lenses. The Oregon Occupiers represent the latest incarnation of county supremacy, a well-established doctrine of right-wing movements. Sometimes county supremacists claim county commissions can exert control over all the land within their boundaries and ignore envir...

  • Guest column: Jergeson wrong on energy'

    Updated Jan 12, 2016

Those who view the Environmental Protection Agency as a planet-saving benevolent dictator will apparently go to any lengths to “prove” their point. An astounding article by former Montana Public Service Commission Chairman Greg Jergeson recently asserted that the EPA’s massive new regulations on power plant CO2 emissions won’t increase energy costs to Montana consumers. It makes you wonder what kind of mushrooms he’s been eating on his hamburgers lately. While I appreciate Mr. Jergeson’s past service, his analysis of the Clea...

    Updated Jan 12, 2016

From Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services Cold weather means more indoor time for many Montanans. Close contact indoors often helps spread illnesses, such as norovirus, anywhere people gather together. The holiday break came to an end for the Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team, but the Billings Bulls made Havre's return to the ice a little more difficult. The Ice Hawks were home to face the Bulls this past weekend at the Havre Ice Dome, but Billings took both games from Havre.
