  • Blood drives coming up in region

    Updated Jan 4, 2019

Press release The American Red Cross encourages people to help meet the urgent need for blood by resolving to give blood this January — National Blood Donor Month. Donating blood is a way to make a lifesaving impact in the new year for patients like Judy Janssen, who was diagnosed with end-stage autoimmune liver disease in 2016. Janssen received frequent blood transfusions — sometimes multiple times a week — until she underwent a liver transplant last January. “Blood donors make a really big difference with very little...

  • Celebrating History: Not a lot of good news

    Updated Jan 4, 2019

By Emily Mayer I hope your new year is going well so far, and that those who celebrated with gusto are now fully recovered from the reverie of New Year’s Eve. The first edition of The Havre Plaindealer of 1919 didn’t carry a lot of good news. The weather summary for 1918 had been released and while there were no record breaking low or high temperatures, precipitation was down, following a weather pattern that started the year before. For December 1918 alone, the area received only one-sixth of normal moisture. The pro...

  • Blue Ponies dim the Stars

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 4, 2019

Over the years some pretty good Havre High basketball players have had the last name of Rismon and after an 18-point performance that included four 3-pointers, it looks like the Blue Ponies may have found another. His name is Mason Rismon and his breakout game for the Ponies began with an early triple that set the tone for the night. The junior scored 12 points in the first half, then added five key points late as Havre outscored Rocky Boy 29-14 over the final 12 minutes to...

  • Lights resume Frontier play in the Armory

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 4, 2019

The non-conference season has been a grind for the Montana State University-Northern Lights. But the Lights are rewarded with starting 2019 in the friendly confines of the Armory Gymnasium. Tonight, Northern (0-2, 8-6) resumes Frontier Conference play by hosting the UM-Western Bulldogs at 8. The Lights continue their homestand Saturday by welcoming in 10th-ranked Lewis-Clark State to the Armory. That game also tips off at 8 p.m. And while the Bulldogs and Warriors are old...

  • Ponies anxious to dive back in

    George Ferguson|Updated Jan 4, 2019

When the Havre High swim teams arrive at the Montana State Swimming Championships next month in Bozeman, they'll be greeted by plenty of changes. For the first time in high school swimming history, Montana will now have individual finals for Class A swimmers. For years, Class A competitors have competed against Class AA at the state meet, and few swimmers from Class A have been able to crack the final heats, let alone bring home medals and state championships. However, with...

He interviewed for the vacant head volleyball job at Montana State University-Northern this week, and Thursday, he...

  • View from the North 40: If I were in charge of world records ...

    Pam Burke|Updated Jan 4, 2019

A couple in Wyoming has received confirmation from Guinness World Records that they are the fastest two-man tent assemblers on record in the entire world. Yes, that’s a thing, and Elizabeth and Daniel Minton did it in just over a minute. No, actually they did it in under a minute, but the Guinness rules said they couldn’t just assemble the tent, they had to put the rain fly on, as well, and they had to crawl into the tent, zip the flap shut and say “done.” This Guinnes...

  • Grief Poem - To Be Noble

    Updated Jan 4, 2019

The New Year’s here but we’re alone — we’ve lost someone so dear, Our spouse or kin or our parents — our life now seems so dear. Remembering that special one brings memories to our heart, this “missing time,” recent or old; they’re gone! Then tear drops start. We may have planned some wondrous things, which vanished in “thin-air.” But noble plans and noble deeds are best hemmed-in in prayer. We plan our ways, but we need help; our dear one has gone on! Revisit plans but look ahead; we’ll ‘meet them’ in the dawn. Oh, Lord, gui...

  • Hello, God. It's me, Mara.

    Updated Jan 4, 2019

You know, Lord, many precious friends and loved ones have been called home in recent month — it’s almost like we’re missing the party but each departed friend is a magnet that attracts us to the next world. When a loved one who knew Jesus passes away, our thoughts often wander to “the other side” as we wonder what they might be experiencing right now. With our limited knowledge and brief glimpses given in Scripture, we try to imagine the glories of a heavenly realm. Heaven. Our parents and grandparents are there; aunts, un...

    Updated Jan 4, 2019

Luke 2:22-24: “When the time came for the purification rites required by the Law of Moses, Joseph and Mary took (Jesus) to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, ‘Every firstborn male is to be consecrated to the Lord’), and to offer a sacrifice in keeping with what is said in the Law of the Lord: ‘a pair of doves or two young pigeons.’” When Mary and Joseph brought the baby Jesus to the temple, they participated in a very religious act, carefully obeying the Law of Moses. It has been...

  • Out Our Way: God is love - 1John 4:7-8

    Updated Jan 4, 2019

Out our way, nature preaches a sermon daily to those who have the eyes, ears, minds and spirit to pay attention. Maybe it’s I because I am a pastor that I am so aware it is all around, but I know Charlie understood it as well. We would ride up a ridge and just sit for a moment to drink it in. The cattle, the song birds, the smells in the breeze, and the big open all around us testified to the simple statement “God is love.” I learned a great deal from “Doc” — so named because he as my teacher and professor of Horse Sense...

  • HHS girls blast Rocky Boy

    Chris Peterson|Updated Jan 4, 2019

The Havre High girls basketball team has always been known for its defense under head coach Dustin Kraske and the Rocky Boy Morning Stars got a reminder of just how stingy the Blue Pony defense can be. The two rivals renewed their annual series, with the first of two games inside the HHS gymnasium Thursday night and after holding the Stars to just three points in the first quarter, Havre limited Rocky Boy to 15 for the game in a dominating 70-15 win. The Ponies are now 7-0 on...
