HELENA (AP) — Gov. Steve Bullock has signed into law a measure that will allow judges to look back 10 years to add penalties for multiple drunken-driving offenders. Attorney General Tim Fox says his bill sponsored by Republican Rep. Christy Clark of Choteau will create a greater deterrent for drunk drivers and put more offenders into treatment programs. The attorney general's office says the previous law allowed a DUI conviction to be counted as a person's first offense if more than five years had passed since the last o...

BILLINGS — The struggle for control of Montana's largest publicly-traded company is turning increasingly bitter ahead of a May 2 shareholders' vote. Former Gov. Brian Schweitzer and a team of dissident investors are sparring with Stillwater Mining executives over who could better lead the company. The stakes for Schweitzer are high, complicated by his considering a run to replace U.S. Sen. Max Baucus. Success would allow Schweitzer to launch a Senate campaign on a high note. Defeat could tarnish his much-touted business c...
The left wing of the political spectrum joined forces with the right wing on Tuesday, screaming in delight that Sen. Max Baucus would not run for a seventh term in the U.S. Senate. Tea party groups pointed to Baucus' support for Obamacare, while the left wing blogs were steamed that Baucus let people down with his vote against mandatory background checks to purchase weapons. Baucus always said he had the best one million bosses in the world — the people of Montana. We suspect that today the million bosses will be more kind t...

HELENA (AP) — The Montana Senate has endorsed a proposed constitutional amendment that would cut off lawmakers for good after 16 years in office. he amended version of House Bill 277 would tighten term-limit provisions to prevent a state legislator from switching from the House to the Senate and back again every eight years. The original House bill would have allowed a legislator who already has served 16 years to run again after sitting out another eight years. A Senate committee changed that provision to limit the total t...
MISSOULA (AP) — A University of Montana study has found that more tourists visited Montana in 2012 and spent more money than in any previous year. It's like watching an old black-and-white movie with the Keystone Cops, or Bud Abbot and Lou Costello, doing slapstick — but maybe, maybe, not as funny. Once again, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the Canada Border Services Agency have agreed to use the same hours at the Port of Wild Horse north of Havre after — once again — first saying they wouldn't extend summer hours, then saying maybe they would, then saying they probably wouldn't, then one side extending hours with the other not. It's bureaucratic slaps...
Things have been rather tumultuous at Rocky Boy's Indian Reservation in recent months. The newly elected chair of the Business Committee was tossed out of office by committee members either because he sexually harassed some employees or, as many believe, because he was talking to federal officials about widespread corruption. Six people are facing charges from said corruption. In a controversial decision, the election board has refused the former chairman and opportunity to run for the seat he has been booted from. The sense...

DART - The Montana Public Service Commission has voted 4-1 to abolish a rule that requires the state's largest utilities to disclose the salaries of their chief executive officers. While the utilities are not government operated, they are a monopoly. and they depend entirely on money that comes from the public. Some utilities have threatened to sue. We're sorry the PSC caved so easily. We think the commission was right in 2010 when it passed the disclosure act. LAUREL - The small city of Harlem is putting on a big bash this...

JUNEAU, Alaska (AP) — A powerful earthquake sparked a tsunami warning for hundreds of miles of Alaskan and Canadian coastline, but the alert was canceled when no damaging waves were generated. The magnitude 7.5 quake and tsunami warning that followed caused concern in some coastal communities, with alarms sounding and people rushing to higher ground for safety. But the Alaska Tsunami Warning Center later said the waves were too small to pose a threat, reaching just six inches above normal sea level in places such as Sitka a...

Editor: Havre is a great place for a lot of reasons. However, this holiday season was proof, once again, that this city has a deep and robust arts community that adds significantly to the livability of this special place. The performances I attended weren't run-of-the-mill events by uninterested people going through the motions until the curtain dropped. While I realize I experienced only a small sampling of the talent on display this Christmastime, what I saw was superb. From the newly formed Havre Community Orchestra to...
