The small towns of Turner and Hogeland in northern Blaine County can be an inspiration to the small communities along the rest of the Hi-Line. The roots in these communities are deep. Many people have lived there for decades. But like in many farm-based communities, the population is declining as farms grow bigger. There are fewer businesses to support the community. It is easier than it once was to drive to nearby communities or shop on the Internet. Some people would say the lifestyle of Turner and Hogeland are from...
WEST GLACIER, Mont. (AP) — Supporters of Glacier National Park and fans of its iconic red tour buses are upset that the park's new concessions contract calls for replacing half of the buses with alternative fuel vehicles by 2029. "I believe it would be an absolute tragedy to eliminate any of the red buses from the fleet," said Bruce Austin, who served on the Red Bus Team that worked to refurbish the fleet from 1999 to 2002. "They should all be kept and refurbished. The public's interest in these vehicles is huge." The t...
BILLINGS (AP) — State prosecutors have filed a negligent homicide charge against a 17-year-old Malta-area boy for the October 2010 shooting death of a 16-year-old hunting companion during a deer hunt northeast of Malta. The charge was filed in Phillips County Youth Court on Jan. 15 by Assistant Attorney General Brant Light, nearly a year after the death of Logan Wilson was ruled an accident. The charging documents allege the teen, who was 14 at the time of Wilson's death, acknowledged that he was looking through the rifle sco...
Little Chazlie Cripps, 4 1/2, and Tristan Riggle, 6, gave me a lot of hope Monday morning. They were standing on the sidewalk awaiting the start of the annual Memorial Day services at the Hill County Courthouse. John Kelleher Tristan was in his little car, and Chazlie was passing out poppies to the crowd, a fundraising event to help area veterans. Chazlie's grandma, Kim Cripps, and Tristan's grandpa, Keith Doll, were talking about how they can explain Memorial Day to kids that young. It's not easy to talk about death to...

Laurel — Memorial Day services will be held in downtown Havre and elsewhere on the Hi-Line Monday. The Havre service, 11 a.m. at Hill County Courthouse, will be a simple, but moving, ceremony in which all veterans groups will take part. It is well worth attending. Spending a few minutes going to the event will be a great way for people to pay tribute to those who have died for our country. Laurel — The people who put on the ceremony do a lot of work behind the scenes. Their work pays off for those who attend the service. Whe...
Early indications are that programs aimed at increasing the number of Montana students who graduate from high school are succeeding. While it may be too early to start doing cartwheels, Hi-Line schools are doing better at seeing students get diplomas. Kudos to North Star High School, where there was a 100 percent graduation rate last year. Other schools, including tribal schools that have had difficulty convincing students to stay until they get a degree, are doing better, also. Lots of things enter the equation when...
Editor: In regards to Mr. Donald Kaul's column ("If you deploy satire, you do so at your own risk," Page 4) in the Jan. 8 Havre Daily News, I wish to remind him that people have been killing each other for hundreds of thousands of years. What did Cain kill Abel with? A club. Mr. Kaul, you're missing the point of the Second Amendment. It is the right to bear arms. It is for the people to keep the government in control. Look at Hitler! It took at least 20 years for him to control the German people with laws that prevented them...
