The fourth annual Kellen Lund Memorial Bike Ride will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m at Pepin Park. The ride was designed to remember Kellen, who died in 2009, when a grain truck struck him while he was walking his bike across the viaduct on 7th Avenue. The ride is also focused on raising driver awareness by reminding the community that everyone shares the road — pedestrians, bikers, and drivers alike. St. Jude Thaddeus Parish and School is currently undergoing construction for a new parking lot and playground. The playground and parking area have been a source of displeasure for some time now. The Rev. Daniel Wathen, pastor at St. Jude’s said, “part of the problem with the parking lot is it’s disintegrating.” The asphalt was laid directly over the ground, and over time, has shifted and settled, causing crumbling. The Hill County 4-H teen representative and queen were elected Thursday for 2013. Natalen Kinsella was elected queen, and Mike Compton was chosen as teen representative. Kinsella, upcoming senior at Havre High School, said that she was not nervous about the verdict. “I was pretty confident,” she said. Morgan Jappe, upcoming Havre High School senior, will be attending the National Student Leadership Conference at Fordham University in New York. The conference is in its 24th year and will take place Tuesday through Aug. 3. At the conference, students will participate in trips, tours and workshops that are tailored to fit individual interests. Bear Paw Credit Union Youth Day was held Wednesday at Pepin Park from 11 a.m to 2 p.m. The credit union partnered with Havre Parks and Recreation to create a fun, carnival-like environment that was free to participating kids and parents alike. Katie Wirtzberger, marketing specialist at Bear Paw Credit Union, said that Youth Day is believed to have been started several years ago in an effort to promote the Credit Union for Kids program. The Blaine County Fair at the Blaine County Fairgrounds in Chinook started this morning and will end Sunday evening. Preparation for the fair started with distributing gravel to dry out the fairgrounds for events that began today. The fair will be without a carnival this year because “it’s difficult to get a carnival any more,” said fair manager of eight years Suzanne Berger. The Boys and Girls Club of the Hi-Line and the HELP Committee along with the help of Montana State University-Northern put on the HELP Camp Tuesday through Thursday for students 5 through 8 grade. Wet weather has prompted an increase in the number of mosquitoes on the Hi-Line. So we asked people at random: Is this the worst mosquito season ever? “I noticed they’re worse at night,” Brandon Dean said. He said that he works from 4 p.m. to 1 a.m. and when he walks home from work, the mosquitos are especially bad. Children from preschool to sixth grade were invited to join St. Jude Thaddeus Church, Van Orsdel United Methodist Church, Messiah Lutheran Church and First Lutheran Church for Faith Alive Vacation Bible School, June 17-21 from 9 a.m to noon. Pepin Park on 4th Street and 7th Avenue is host to many exciting events throughout the summer months, including Pepin Park Activities, which runs June 3 through July 26. Havre native Bryden Vukasin, who now lives in Missoula, is a contestant for “The Bachelorette,” Season 9, which is running Mondays on ABC. The first episode aired May 27, the second June 3, and the third Monday. Monday was the first day of the Spanish Camp held at Havre High School, coordinated by the Havre High School Spanish Club. This is the first year of the program and was offered to students in first through fifth grades. Attendance for the first day was high. The Hi-Line Cruz’n’s annual Rod Run will be held this weekend at the Great Northern Fairgrounds. Classic cars from around Montana, neighboring states and Canada will be on display. Jessa Pyette, incoming senior at Havre High School, left today for a four-week summer program at The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. This is an intensive four-week, acting-based program that is intended to help high school- and college-aged students determine if they would like to go into acting full-time. Pyette said she heard about the program through Casey Pobran and Stephanie Mclain of the Rocky Mountain Entertainment Agency, who encouraged her to audition in Missoula in late October. Local veterans will hold at a Memorial Day program Monday at 11 a.m at the Hill County Courthouse. The lineup includes a flag-raising ceremony to be performed by local Boy Scouts of America. Weather permitting, flags will be marched down the sidewalks outside the courthouse, and the national anthem will be played.
