  • RSVP aiding DUI research

Letter to the Editor — Arlie Lane

RSVP aiding DUI research Editor: It was interesting and revealing to read, Sept. 8, the Havre Daily News article on Page A1, "Report issued halfway through DUI research." It has long been a stickler to law enforcement officers on just how to proceed on convictions of charges of driving under the influence. Counties vary, and there are different perceptions of the blood alcohol content on each individual case. In order to serve the legislative interim committee with research facts, the Montana Community Change Coalition has be...

  • Don Ryan experienced in serving Montana

Letter to the Editor — Ray Peck

Don Ryan experienced in serving Montana Editor: I have known state Sen. Don Ryan, who is a candidate for the Public Service Commission, for a number of years now, and hold him in high regard, especially for his governmental service to the people of Montana. His opponent may be a nice, young man, but I don't think he is dry behind the ears yet, politically speaking. It appears to me that he is the recipient of some corporate funds to run his campaign. Please be reminded that Don Ryan has been a Democrat in all the offices he...

  • Rehberg's fire lawsuit misunderstood

Letter to the Editor — Greg Beck, Whitefish

I just finished rereading the Billings Fire Department (BFD) and Department of Natural Resources and Conservation fire reports on the Rehberg ranch fire of July 2008 and talked to people on this fire and to neighbors. I am an independent voter and was a wildland firefighter for 37 years (majority a smokejumper) and an initial attack or extended attack incident commander on nearly 200 of 600 fires. The initial response to the Rehberg fire was on July 1, 2008. The fire was contained at 1 acre. On July 2, the BFD report has...

  • Warburton does what's right for north-central Montana

Letter to the Editor — State Sen. Taylor Brown, Huntley

When Bureau of Land Management Director Bob Abbey came to Malta recently, he heard many of us express concern about the possibility of another national monument here. I spoke personally with the director, and I was glad to see Rep. Wendy Warburton also there, standing up against big government for private property rights. Wendy told him the federal government has more than enough control over more than enough land in Montana already. In the last legislative session, I watched Wendy serve with dedication on the House Agricultu...

  • Warburton is no photo-op backer of Second Amendment

Letter to the Editor: Gary Marbut, President Montana Shooting Sports A

Those candidates uncommitted to the right to bear arms always try to lure gun owning voters with the bait of a photo-op picture of the candidate holding a shotgun. Because they are not committed to the right to bear arms, such candidates think voters equate duck hunting with gun rights. They should be allowed to make that crucial mistake to help us sort out the good candidates from the others. Rep. Wendy Warburton has proven herself and earned her spurs with the gun rights community. She has a perfect voting record on gun...

  • CASA Volunteer backs Swandal for Supreme Court

Letter to the Editor — Gail McCormick, Volunteer CASA/GAL, Sixth

As a volunteer with the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program, I strongly urge you to vote for Judge Nels Swandal in the upcoming Supreme Court election. In addition to helping create a CASA program for Park and Sweet Grass counties, Judge Swandal has always taken care to put the best interest of the child first when dealing with unfortunate cases of abuse and neglect. One case in particular stands out. In 2005, a repeat sex offender, Dean Randolph Jess, admitted to twice raping his 10-year-old stepdaughter. A...

  • Kris Hansen is a person of integrity

Letter to the Editor — Judith Ellen Moody, Havre

As election time draws near, I'm reminded of how I like to become familiar with the candidates so that I can vote knowledgeably, instead of "just for a name" or for a party on a ballot. I would like to share with others what I have come to know about Kris Hansen, who is running for a House seat in District 33. Kris is a person of honesty, integrity and Godly values and is highly dedicated to whatever she commits. Her sense of fairness, coupled with her experience in and extensive knowledge of government and the law, make a...

  • A 'Tour de Havre' on the Hi-Line?

Letter to the Editor — Bob Waldron, Havre

To the readers of the Havre Daily News: Is there a future Lance Armstrong in the Havre area? I ask because I am a "new resident" here and a semi-athlete who likes to ride bikes in the area. I'm suggesting arranging a tour much like the Tour de France, which will happen next year from July 2 to 24 in France. May I suggest having a Tour de Havre anywhere in the immediate area. For those of us who like to ride bikes that will get us "newbies" out and about for an introduction to much of north-central Montana. I am a career Monta...

  • Warburton understands the needs of northern Montana

Letter to the Editor — Russell Nemetz, Billings

To My Friends in House District 34: This year's election is very important for Montana. As we get ready to cast our votes, whether it be absentee ballots or at the polls on Nov. 2, it's important for all of us do a little homework and get to know the candidates and where they stand on the issues. Having grown up in production agriculture near Chinook and spending the past 15 years reporting on our agriculture and natural resources industries as a radio and television broadcaster, I can tell you that we need elected officials...

  • Dennison looking out for number one

Letter to the Editor — John Snider, Havre

If you listen closely enough up here in Havre when the wind is blowing out of the southwest, you can hear George Dennison down at the University of Montana in Missoula feeding at the public trough. Not content with his lavish salary, his compensation from various boards and his recent $75,000 pay raise, Mr. Dennison now has asked the state's retirement board to suspend its rules so that he can get another $200 a month in retirement. The board wisely rejected his request. At a time when Dennison has frozen faculty and staff...
