Editor: To Havre, Chinook and the surrounding Hi-Line community: Thank you for the contributions given to Margarita and I for her accrued costs for travel and for medical care due to having fought and won the battle against cancer by the grace of God. Margarita and I consider Havre and the Hi-Line our home, and we were deeply touched by and thankful for your charity. We live in a special place. Sincerely yours, and God Bless you all, Patrick Campbell and Margarita Guerra Alvarez...
Threats have no place in public discourse Editor: What do we have in common? Well, we both call Havre, Mont., home. Aside from that geographical fact, it would be very difficult to find much of anything for which we agree. Steelers vs. Packers nope. Taxpayer funding of Planned Parenthood, we couldn't be further apart. Whether or not the 2000 presidential election was decided fairly, definitely not. Some very disturbing news from Helena this week did, however, make the two of us realize that we have one unwavering principle...
Social host ordinance is the right choice Editor: Kids report that most of the time they get alcohol from "social" sources like older friends, friends' parents, etc. We know sometimes they are getting it from retail businesses, too, but with compliance checks now, that should start to diminish. Our youth deserve the community's support to do the right thing for their health and safety and if we can begin to eliminate social sources of alcohol, it will give another tool to show youth that their neighbors, parents friends want...
Editor: Well, dear friends in Havre and along the Hi-Line, we opted for change last election, and we sure got it. We forgot what political ideology had nearly brought our nation to its economic knees and put them back in power. Now we see more debacles rising to the surface as a very narrow political viewpoint once again seeks to bend our lives into its blind ideology. One must wonder at Rep. Warburton's insight as she and her fellow Republicans offer legislation that actually does very little to provide new jobs for Montana,...
Editor: I would like to thank the Havre Daily News and Montana State University-Northern for including my grandson's wrestling accomplishments throughout your publications. Myles attended Havre High School, and he is a sophomore at UGF (Great Falls). Myles has now completed two successful wrestling seasons, and I am very proud of him. I thank the UGF wrestling staff, the Havre wrestling programs, his parents, and the many people who have supported Myles' wrestling passion. I appreciate the cheers from Myles' home crowd while...
AFSCME supports Wisconsin public sector workers Editor: Wisconsin public service workers... we hear you, and we support you. Montana AFSCME Council 9 is part of America's largest union, with 1.6 million members that provide vital services that make Montana and America happy. With members in hundreds of occupations — from nurses to corrections officers, child-care providers to sanitation workers, from officers to attorneys — AFSCME is the voice of the dedicated workers who take care of America and is a leading advocate for...
Senate Bill 13 threatens state parks Editor: Senate Bill 13 has cleared the Senate Finance and Claims Committee and will be voted on by the Montana Senate in the coming days. The bill would change current Montana law that provides more than $2.5 million for state parks. Currently, Montana residents are assessed an optional $4 fee when they register a light vehicle, with the option to opt-out when they pay their vehicle registration. More than 80 percent of Montanans choose to pay this fee, allowing them to be admitted free to...
Montana tea party has strayed from Republican ideals Editor: Nullification? Paramilitary armies? Has the tea party group in Helena gone completely crazy? When Thomas Jefferson first discussed the principle with James Madison, both Jefferson and particularly Madison made clear that the nullification they saw as a right of states was in the form of an advisory resolution. A state legislature could call attention to laws they deemed unconstitutional to challenge, not to defy those laws. It was John C. Calhoun, the infamous...
Warburton's home guard is extremist Editor: Those of you who voted for state Rep. Wendy Warburton probably thought she was a one-issue candidate — that her only goal is to ban abortion, even though it's legal in this country and that most people are pro-choice. She's intent on forcing her religious viewpoint on others. That's not all she's been up to down in Helena. Warburton has introduced a bill to allow armed militia groups to form around the state — with some state funding, no less. Warburton claims that law enf...
Editor: Planned Parenthood of Montana has been my primary care provider for the last 13 years. I've gone to them for contraception, annual exams, cancer screenings, anxiety and depression issues, digestion problems and more. Family planning services around the country operate on Title X funding. That funding goes toward the services I just listed. Title X funding is never used for abortion care, and yet this particular funding which provides life-saving, preventative care is exactly what conservatives and the anti-choice...
Editor: Regarding Zach White's article, "GOP points to violations in Kaul's council race funding, " in the Sept. 15 Havre Daily News: The state of Montana candidate forms mentioned in this story were incorrectly referred to as campaign finance documents. The correct name of the document is "Form C-1-A Statement of Candidate. " Filing this document is mandatory for county and municipal candidates. The C-1-A requires the candidate's name, address and, if applicable, the name of the bank at which you intend to have the campaign...
Editor: Dear Marc Mariani and family: On behalf of the Havre Public Schools Education Foundation and all our current and future students, thank you for your generous financial donation and for your immeasurable generosity and support. We are truly grateful and honored to be recipients of this donation. Thank you also for supporting our alumni game activities by personalizing your autographed message on the Titans Mariani jersey for the auction winner. The entire donation will be used as seed money for the Foundation's...
Editor: For months, Republicans in Montana have tried to cast our state as the most bloated, broken, bankrupt state in the nation. Our Republican colleagues would have you believe we Montanans are responsible for the global recession, that we've lost our innovative spirit, and that we just can't compete anymore. But let us tell you about the Montana we see. We see a state that the U. S. Chamber of Commerce ranked No. 1 for entrepreneurs and business start-ups. We see a state that Forbes magazine called one of the fastest...
Legislation doesn't trump research Editor: Did you ever think maybe medical and psychological research costs too much? Apparently the Montana Legislature agrees. They can just pass a law that marijuana is a good treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder and, BAM, it is so! Of course, like many sedating drugs, marijuana can sedate you enough that you care less about your troubles. But a real treatment of any problem has goals such as emotional healing, healthy relationships and the ability to work. Not just being too...
Eminent domain bill should concern land owners Editor: As a landowner I am always wary of eminent domain legislation. I feel property owners need to take a close look at House Bill 198. Eminent domain involves the taking of property for a "greater" public good. This bill has a narrow motivation; however, like all legislation passed into law, it will effect landowner rights for years to come. HB 198 was created in an attempt to solve an issue for the Montana Alberta Tie Line. MATL is a corporate entity wishing to construct...
Honored to be part of Youth of the Year event Editor: Last week, I was honored to co-host the Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year event in Helena. One of the three finalists was our own Shawna Cary of Havre. Although she was ill and unable to attend in person, Shawna competed by video, and she did an amazing job! Please congratulate Shawna. Even though the judges ultimately picked a different candidate, I was extremely proud of the great job Shawna did and how wonderfully she represented Havre. The sky is the limit for...
Bow Wow Boarding moving on Editor: Bow Wow Boarding is closing at the end of March. I will miss all of you and your people. I will now have to start washing my face at night instead of relying on all the dog kisses. Great for the skin! I loved my so-called job. My job was to love your dogs while you were gone in your stressful times or joyful times. I was excited for you for the joyful times and my heart hurt when you had to travel for sad times. But most of all, you trusted me with your dogs to be second mamma in command...
Hansen's bill is poorly hidden homophobia Editor: Tonight I read with interest and humor and frustration the letter from the president of the Montana Family Foundation. Some praise for Rep. Hansen is indeed appropriate because she is a fine lawyer and finally found what he feels is a legitimate reason to undermine the concern for homosexual discrimination. I would hardly fit the description of a homosexual activist, but I am certainly aware that Montana has a group of homophobic people, and I pray we don't end up with our own...
Warburton should know the House rules Editor: Rep. Warburton stood against citizens who had come to testify on legislation in front of the House Judiciary Committee by supporting the committee chairman, Rep. Peterson, R-Billings, in denying them a right to come to the podium and state their name and whether they were for or against a pending bill. Warburton has been a member long enough to know that the House rules and Mason's Manual gives that right to everyone wanting to participate in the hearing. She blindly supported her...
Editor: Having been a resident of Havre for a number of years, I would congratulate the parents of Marc Mariani, the coach of the Blue Ponies and the entire city who stood behind him. Let us hope he can make it as big as "Big Mike," Mike Tilleman of Chinook. George E. Sexton, Shepherd Editor: Having been a resident of Havre for a number of years, I would congratulate the parents of Marc Mariani, the coach of the Blue Ponies and the entire city who stood behind him. Let us hope he can make it as big as "Big Mike," Mike...
Editor: What makes our communities a success is the amount of support we have for one another. Master Sports and Tilleman Motors are two businesses I would like to thank for supporting area youth activities. I know that my business will stay with you, and I will continue to promote you to people who will listen. Keep up the good business practices and thank you. Zane J. Rosette, Box Elder Editor: What makes our communities a success is the amount of support we have for one another. Master Sports and Tilleman Motors are two...
City shouldn't talk about ice removal Editor: This is in regard to a Dec. 23 article about keeping our sidewalks clear of ice. Of all people to tell us about sidewalk winter maintenance shouldn't be city Public Works Director Peterson or his assistant Jenson because they can't even take care of our streets, and we pay them. I have worked in all the Rocky Mountain states and worked in a lot of different cities, and not once have I seen poor maintenance like Havre. I was out at Rocky Boy the other day, and all the villages I...
Editor: Senate Bill 409 revising state land cabin site laws has passed the Montana Senate. Senators acted on a fair and equitable solution for state lease fees, so prices won't plummet, site abandonment won't rise drastically, and beneficiaries (schools) won't see a significant loss of income. It is now in the hands of the House Natural Resources Committee. My husband and I are lease holders and hope to retire next year — at 69 and 63 respectively. If SB 409 passes, bringing the lease fees back in line with realistic v...
Editor: Regarding Havre City Council's attempt to legalize fireworks in the city limits — since we're not going to get a chance to vote on the change — I would like to challenge our council members to poll their constituents regarding this subject. I'm positive they would discover that the majority are against it for a number of reasons, including 1) noise pollution — both for the residents and their pets that are scared to death of fireworks noise; and 2) littering — we have at least one resident in the Heritage Additio...
Frustration at the legislative session Editor: I'm frustrated and angered how this legislative session is going. We are avid hunters, anglers and ardent conservationists. Who sent these legislators to Helena to cheapen, trample and make a chicanery of our outdoor traditions? The hunters and anglers I talk to are equally frustrated and angry. What a long list of special interest legislation. We've seen efforts to steal our hunting and fishing dollars, several attempts to disembowel the FWP Commission, limit Fish, Wildlife and...
