  • Play Ball: Blue Ponies set to open the season

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

The preparation for the season opener probably hasn't been under the exact conditions the Havre High Ponies softball team would have hoped for as the 2011 spring sports season got under way, but after a couple of weeks of indoor practices, the Blue Ponies are still excited about this weekend. The Central A Ponies never got the full cooperation from Mother Nature that they needed to practice outside. But as they prepare to make their season debut on Friday at the Great Falls Jamboree in Great Falls, the Ponies know the...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a great season for the Harlem girls basketball team. Unfortunately, the Wildcats' division is just too tough. Harlem (11-12) suffered losses to top-ranked Fairfield, 69-30 on Thursday and Shelby, 48-34 on Friday to exit the Northern B Divisional in Malta. In the loss to Fairfield, the eventual Northern B champion, the Wildcats got 15 points from Jacinda Fuller and another 13 from Hyapatia Getten. Against Shelby in the loser-out round, Harlem was led by Maurvella Fuller's 10 points. Fairfield 69, Harlem 30 Fairfield...

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

GREAT FALLS — The Chinook Sugarbeeters and Box Elder Bears represented the 9C well this weekend. But as both of their seasons wound down and came to an end, they will have to wait until next year if they hope to make it to the state tournament. Both the Beeters and Bears spent the weekend in Great Falls at the Four Seasons Arena at the Northern C girls basketball tournament. On Friday the Beeters and Bears faced off for yet another time this season. And once again it was the Beeters who got the best of the Bears with a 6...

The Beeters entered the tournament as a No. 1 seed and the Bears entered the tournament as a No. 2 seed. Both teams competed on Friday in the hopes of keeping their seasons alive. • Area track stars lay it on the line

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Havre Daily News/Nikki Carlson For the North Star girls and Chinook boys high school track teams, this weekend in Missoula is about chasing state championship dreams. For many local athletes, it will also be about getting to the top of that medal stand. Missoula is the site of the Class C state track meet today and Saturday, and while many local athletes will be in attendance, it's the Knights and Sugarbeeters who might have the most to gain. The North Star girls have been building toward this season for quite some time, and...

  • Five Hawks named 10C All-Conference

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The high school basketball season is in the books, but plenty of local high school girls are still making headlines. Along the Hi-Line, several girls hoopsters have been honored for their play this season. In District 1B, Rocky Boy's Caitlyn Gamble earned District 1B second-team all-conference honors for 2010-11. Gamble is a 6-0 sophomore starter for the Morning Stars, and she averaged 13 points and six rebounds per game this year, but was instrumental in Rocky Boy's run down the stretch by averaging 18 points per game in...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If the Montana State University-Northern Lights were in a tightly contested Frontier Conference race before Saturday night's showdown with Carroll College, now they're in a fight to the finish. On Saturday night in Helena, the No. 16 Lights lost to the Carroll College Fighting Saints 56-47, meaning Northern split its a last two Frontier road games of the regular season. The Lights beat Rocky Mountain College on Thursday night in Billings. The split also drops the Lights back into a four-way tie with Carroll, UM-Western and...

On Saturday night, a struggling Skylights' team went into Helena and stormed their way past the Carroll College Fighting Saints 70-54 for a surprise road win and a little redemption. Northern lost a heartbreaking game on Thursday night at Rocky Mountain College but salvaged an important split on its final road trip with the win at Carroll. Saturday night's...

  • HHS girls finish strong

Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News sports

Coaches and teams like to preach that defense wins games, and that long time strategy was proved to be correct on Friday by the Havre High girls basketball team. The Blue Ponies traveled to Browning for their last conference as well as regular season game of the year. And coming from behind in an almost impossible fashion, the Central A Ponies earned a 30-28 victory. Offensively the Ponies struggled early. They scored just one point in the first quarter and three in the second. But the defense was playing outstanding as they...

If there was ever a time for the Havre High boys basketball team to have its best offensive game of the season, it was Saturday night in Browning. The Central A Blue Ponies were on the road where they faced the conference rival Browning Indians in their last game of the season. And coming away with the huge victory, the Ponies defeated the Indians 75-73. "I felt good going into the game," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. • Skylights hope to regroup at RMC, Carroll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a season of highs and lows for the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team. And right now, the Skylights are trying to come back up from a low. Northern enters this weekend's road trip at Rocky Mountain College, tonight in Billings and Carroll College, Saturday night in Helena, coming off a rare two-game home stand in which the Skylights were swept on their home floor. And with how difficult the Frontier is on a nightly basis, getting back up from that low won't be easy, especially against two...

  • First-place Lights hit the road

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team is ranked higher than any other Frontier Conference team right now. And the No. 16 Lights are alone atop the conference standings. But if one lesson has been learned through 10 league games this season, it's that things can change in a hurry. And that's what the Lights (18-7, 7-3) will try to guard against when they take on league foes Rocky Mountain College tonight in Billings and Carroll College Saturday in Helena. The Lights may be on top of the Frontier right...

The 2011 9C girls tournament will feature some of the best basketball teams in the area, and it starts with the Box Elder Bears (17-1), who have a chance to repeat as district champions this weekend. Box...

  • George Ferguson Column: Huse has been a credit to coaching at MSU-N

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Time-and-time again during the course of the great run the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team has been on this season, I've heard fans refer to the Lights as unselfish. Fans, coaches, players alike, unselfish basketball season to be the theme surrounding this year's Northern team. It's that type of play which has carried the Lights to a Frontier Conference championship and a berth in this week's NAIA national tournament. And while it's true that the Lights certainly play team basketball, the word unselfis...

  • Leader of the Lights

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Consistency. That's a word which is firmly entrenched in Montana State University-Northern head coach Shawn Huse' vocabulary. He preaches it to his players and assistant coaches. He lives by it in all things, and he means it. But over the last nine years in Havre, that word could also best describe Huse and his coaching tenure at Northern. In essence, since the day Huse arrived in Havre, almost a decade ago, the Lights, the program and everything surrounding MSU-Northern basketball has been very consistent, and that's a...

  • Orediggers get by Skylights

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team was looking to bounce back from a heartbreaking loss to UM-Western on Friday night. Instead, Saturday night brought more frustration as the Skylights lost to high-powered Montana Tech 76-68 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The loss to Tech meant a rare sweep at home for MSU-N and the Skylights fell to 3-7 in league play and 12-14 overall. Northern didn't play poorly against the Orediggers, but the Skylights couldn't overcome a monsterous 32-point effort from Tech...

  • Lights clobber Tech

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It would have been easy for the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team to let down after Friday night's thrilling win over UM-Western. Instead, the Lights were focused and dominant. Northern took control of the Frontier Conference by thumping Montana Tech 60-38 Saturday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. Following the sweep of Western and Tech, the No. 25 Lights stand at 7-3 in the Frontier and all alone in first place with four games to go. "It would have been very easy to not be as focused tonight,...

  • Bulldogs stun Skylights in Havre, again

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team had been here before. A big lead, late in the game against a dangerous UM-Western team. And like before, the Bulldogs did the unthinkable yet again. On Friday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs erased a 14-point second-half deficit and beat the Skylights 72-69 in the final minute of the game. Northern has lost similar games to Western in several seasons recently. "It's disappointing because we were really in control and felt like we were playing...
