It was another great season of boys basketball on the Hi-Line and the annual Havre Daily News All Hi-Line Boys Team reflects just that. Individually, there were great performances all over the area this winter. This year's All Hi-Line Team features just four repeat performers and no players which have made the list more than twice. The team is also senior-laden with seven players who just wrapped up great careers leading the way, while only one underclassmen made the list. It's also a balanced list as no team has more than...

Blue Pony girls take one final shot in tennis The Havre High girls tennis team has seen its most successful run in school history the last decade. In fact, when the Blue Ponies finished fourth at the Class A state meet a year ago in Billings, it was their lowest finish in the last eight years. And while graduation and participation seemed to effect the downward trend from when the Ponies captured a coveted state championship just three years ago, they come into the 2011 Class A state tournament with a renewed vigor. Havre...
There was a time when the Havre High boys tennis team would roll into a state tournament not having to wonder if the Blue Ponies would walk away state champions. However, thanks to improving tennis programs all over Class A, as well as the inevitably of top players graduating each spring, the Ponies are now part of a handful of strong Class A programs, and they must battle for what is theirs each and every year. Still, as three HHS players prepare to play in the 2011 Class A state tourney Thursday and Friday in Great Falls,...
The Chinook Sugarbeeters came to the Class B-C state tennis tournament as the defending girls champions. Unfortunately, graduation can hamper a team's chances for a repeat. Chinook lost several key seniors off of last year's state title team, and the Beeters, while still a B-C power, just didn't have the depth to keep pace at the 2011 B-C state tournament this past weekend in Missoula. Chinook scored 16 points to finish in a tie for fourth place with Conrad and Fort Benton. Cut Bank, coached by veteran Jim Gregg earned its...

The summer months are filled with sports camps which, in turn, are filled with hard-working athletes of all ages preparing for the upcoming season. And whether it be a basketball, volleyball, football or wrestling camp, the goals are all the same: bring in athletes, show them a good time and, most importantly, teach them a thing or two about their sport of choice. If that's the case, the annual Bear Paw Wrestling Camp put on by Havre High head wrestling coach Scott Filius may very well be one of the best in business. The...

If the preseason is about building a team, about getting the most preparation a team can before the start of conference play, then the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team certainly accomplished that mission. This past weekend, the Skylights ended nonconference play by going 4-0 at the Dakota Wesleyn Tournament in Mitchell, S.D. And MSU-N head coach Bill Huebsch said things are right where they need to be heading into to Northern's Frontier Conference and home debut against UM-Western this Friday. "It was really...

Late in the fourth quarter the Ponies led the Maroons 20-17. The lead came after the Ponies overcame a 10-0 deficit in the first half. And the Havre High boys and girls track and field teams are finding that out first hand, as the Blue Ponies suffered yet another delay to the start of their season. Saturday, the Central A Blue Ponies were expected to compete in Lewistown, but after a cancelation, the Ponies must wait at least a few more days before getting under way. Now the plan is to hopefully compete at the North Star Cal Wearly track meet on Wednesday at the Havre...
The Havre High boys and girls tennis teams were set to compete at the Conrad Invitational this past Saturday. Mother Nature, however, had other ideas. A nasty day Saturday cancelled the Conrad tournament, and eventually snowed out three critical duals the Ponies were slated to play. Fortunately, Havre still got competition in thanks to Cut bank once again hosting duals inside their gymnasium. "We were really looking forward to going to Conrad," Havre head coach George Ferguson said. "Those duals would have meant a lot to our...
