  • CMR runs away from Pony girls

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

The Class AA CMR Rustlers are a tough team for anybody to handle, and the Havre High girls basketball team definitely had its hands full. Saturday the Central A Blue Ponies were in Great Falls where they were defeated 61-32 by the Rustlers. With the nonconference loss the Ponies remained 2-5 in league play, but dropped to 3-8 overall. "We were pretty pleased with our kids," Havre High head coach Dustin Kraske said. "CMR is obviously better than us right now at this point in the season where we both are at, but I was pleased...

  • Westminster women take care of MSU-N

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Two blowout wins at home one week, two tough road losses the next. That's life in the Frontier Conference and that's been the life of the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team the last two weeks. The Skylights were red-hot coming into this week's trip to nationally-ranked Frontier powers LC State and Westminster. But after the week began with a tough loss at LC State, it ended on a difficult note for the Skylights. On Saturday night in Salt Lake City, Northern fell to 11th-ranked Westminster College,...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

What a difference a week can make in the Frontier Conference. But Northern lost by nine points at LC State on Thursday and things didn't get any better two days later in Salt Lake City. On Saturday night, the Lights fell to the No. 23 Westminster...

  • Rustlers prove too big for Blue Ponies

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For 32 minutes of basketball this season, the Havre High boys have given the Class AA CMR Rustlers all they wanted. Unfortunately for the Blue Ponies, it's the last 32 minutes that have been the difference. Just like in last month's game in Great Falls, the Blue Ponies gave the Rustlers a big scare in the first half of Saturday night's rematch at the HHS gymnasium. But just like back in December, the Rustler's size took over in the second half. CMR broke open a 16-13 halftime lead by going inside to 6-7 center Russ Morin, and...

And getting the home sweep, the Ponies defeated the Dogies 42-30 and defeated the Cowboys 70-9. "It's great to wrestle these guys, especially since we won't see any of them at state," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "There was nothing on the line and...

  • Aloha: Mariani shatters Pro Bowl return records

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani said earlier this week that Pro Bowl traditions for rookies include players who make the least amount of money pick up plenty of tabs during their stay in Hawaii. So while he may be out some bucks when he leaves Honolulu, he'll still be leaving with plenty to smile about. Although the NFC pounded Mariani's AFC squad 55-41 Sunday afternoon in Hawaii, the Tennessee Titans receiver and former Blue Pony star left his own mark on the game by returning nine kickoffs for an astounding 326 yards — both new Pro Bowl r...

Despite low numbers roster-wise, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team put together a successful 2010 campaign. Now, a relatively new group of North Stars, mixed with some quality veterans and a legendary head coach will try and do the same this spring and summer. After going 31-21 a year ago, but missing out on the Class A state tournament, the North Stars are back for another season of baseball, and a familiar face will be in the dugout and on the third-baseline. • Central A will be a wild ride

    Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News

With teams out there like Polson, Laurel and Miles City, the Central A conference isn't known for exactly being a powerhouse in Montana prep football right now. But with five solid teams making up the league, the Central A isn't a slouch either. The race for the Central A titles gets under way tonight all around the state, and it should be an interesting next month of games. Havre Daily News/Nikki Carlson Blue Pony junior Thurman Holdsclaw runs with the ball during a Class A football game againstWhitefish last month in...

  • Ponies open Central A play at rival Belgrade

Daniel Horton - Havre Daily News

The tougher the nonconference schedule, the better teams get as the season progresses. That is normally the mentality in the game of football, as teams prepare for the conference schedule. And, if that's true, the Havre Blue Ponies should be well-prepared for the Central A after facing Whitefish, Butte Central, Miles City and Sidney en route to the conference schedule. • George Ferguson column: Armory holds so many memories, but it's certainly time for some TLC

George Ferguson. Havre Daily News sports editor

I'm only 36 years old so you'll have to forgive me if I leave out some significant moments in this trip down memory lane. But there's no doubt that if you were like me, and grew up in Havre, the Armory Gymnasium has to hold some special moments in your life. It certainly does mine. My early memories of the grand old gym mostly revolve around basketball. The old Frontier Conference, when teams would play each other on back-to-back nights, those were games everybody went to. The battles with the old UGF Argos and with Rocky...

  • Famed Armory has been around a long time

    Daniel Horton, Havre Daily News

Located on the south side of the Montana State University-Northern campus, the Armory Gymnasium, also known as the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse has been a Havre landmark since the late 1950's. Its arched roofline and sloping curves have grown to be almost iconic in this small, sports-loving town. But there are plans for change in the future. And not all good things must come to an end; sometimes they just need a little updating. The Armory gymnasium came about in 1957, after almost 20 years of Northern Montana College athletics...

Friday the North Stars hosted the Lethbridge Spitz Miners for two league games at Legion field in Havre. And while it looked like the North Stars were going to come away with two wins, they ended up with a split. The Miners took game one 21-12 after overcoming an...

  • Annual Shrine Game features local stars

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

For many high school football players, the annual Montana East/West Shrine Game is the last chance to step onto a football field. And it's also an honor and a privilege just to be selected to the prestigious event. And while it won't be the last game for all of them, Saturday night's 64th annual Shrine Game in Laurel will be an exciting and unique experience for three Hi-Line stars. Playing on the East squad in this year's game are Chinook's Tyler Molyneaux and Josh Jones, as well as Harlem's Charles Lamebull. Molyneaux will...

  • A Blue Pony moves to Northern's bench

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

When it comes to the basketball coaching profession, changing jobs is nothing new. After all, they don't call it the coaching carousel for nothing. And change is bringing a former Havre Blue Pony to the bench at Montana State University-Northern. MSU-N men's head basketball coach Shawn Huse recently announced that former Havre High standout and Chinook basketball coach Chris Daniel is joining the Lights' staff for the 2011-12 season. While at Northern, Daniel will finish his degree in elementary education, something he said...

  • HDN Athlete Profile: A Pony senior gets ready for her final year

Daniel Horton - Havre Daily News

Juletta Don is headed into her senior year at Havre High, and with her senior volleyball season on the horizon as well, this year looks to be a promising one. This will be Don's fourth year of Blue Pony volleyball, and her second on the varsity squad. And while Don was a crucial component to last year's team as a junior, hopefully, she still has room to improve. A year ago Don totaled 33 blocks, enough to lead the Blue Pony squad. And with this being her varsity season, Don is looking to be even more impressive on the court...
