  • Blue Pony swimmers succeed in Helena

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

With the regular season winding down, high school swimmers are starting to gear up for the final races of the season. For the Havre Blue Ponies, those races come in two weeks at the all-class state meet in Butte. But before the Ponies get to Butte, they had one last meet in which to prepare. And in many ways, they took full advantage. The Pony boys and girls were at the Carroll College pool Saturday for the prestigious Helena Invitational, and while they faced off against some of the best individual swimmers in Montana, they...

  • Ponies get a rematch with GFH girls

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports editor

The Class AA Great Falls Bison have two very tough basketball programs, and the Havre High boys and girls squads are going to have their hands full. Tonight the Central A boys will take to the road to face the Bison, while also tonight, the Pony girls will host the Bison at the HHS gymnasium at 7 p.m. for two non-conference matchups. When the Pony girls faced the Bison earlier this month in Great Falls, the Ponies fell 48-40. And after playing the Bison so well the first time around, the Ponies are looking to do so again at...

  • HDN Athlete Profile: Kacie Johnson

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

Senior swimmer Kacie Johnson has been a big part of the Havre High girls swim team success. Johnson has been a varsity letter winner all four years, and has participated in the all-class swim meat for three years, as well as now preparing to compete in her fourth. While at state, Johnson has been a part of a state championship team her freshman and sophomore year, and helped her team take second place at state a year ago. And with another state meet just around the corner, Johnson is hoping she and the rest of the Ponies can...

  • Blue Ponies take down Rustlers

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

The Class AA CMR Rustlers came to town, but the Havre High Blue Ponies handled their own business. The Central A Ponies hosted the Rustlers Tuesday night at the Havre High gymnasium. And the Ponies came away with the 52-27 victory. But the Ponies' lineup was a little different on Tuesday. HHS remained open at 98 pounds, but to fill the hole at 140, the Ponies had five grapplers move up in weight. Gilbert Bara usually wrestles at 112, but moved up to 119, and Duell Stadel who normally wrestles at 119 moved up to 125. Thomas Gr...

  • Blue Ponies tee it up at Central A Meet

Daniel Horton - Havre Daily News

The Havre High School boys and girls golf teams have already put together a pretty solid golf season. Now, with the hopes of divisional supremacy and a berth into the state tournament on the line, the Blue Ponies are hoping for yet another solid weekend of play. Saturday the Central A Ponies will travel to Browning for the 18-hole Central A Divisional tournament. HHS will play at the East Glacier Lodge Golf Course, where the top three boys and top three girls teams, as well as the top 15 boys and top 15 girls will make the...

  • HHS golfers back in action

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High School golf teams will have plenty of time on the links this week. Starting today, Blue Pony golfers will be in action in Great Falls and Lewistown. The Blue Pony boys are headed to the Class AA Great Falls Invitational which gets under way today. The tournament is a 36-hole event with one day being played at Meadowlark Country Club and the second day at Eagle Falls Golf Course. The Great Falls Invite is arguably the toughest tournament in Montana high school golf, so only the Pony boys varsity team will be in...

  • Aero Lounge wins in Chinook

    Havre Daily News

The Chinook Men's golf league wrapped up its season on Sept. 14 with the Aero Lounge defeating Chinook Medical 41 points to 39 points in the championship match. Aero Lounge won its fourth championship in the last five years, and it's the second time they have went back-to-back. This year, due to the weather cancelling most of the early league matches, all teams made the playoffs and set up the dual between Chinook Medical and Aero Lounge. The individual players who participated against each other and their scores are as...

  • Saints coming off a big week

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

If there's one thing that's becoming quite clear as it relates to Frontier Conference basketball this season, it's that nothing is clear. After just two weeks of league play on the men's side, no team is undefeated any more, and the team picked to dominate the conference this winter, Westminster College already has two losses. Westminster was beaten by Carroll College this week in Helena, and to show the respect the country has for the Frontier, the Saints jumped all the way from being un-ranked, to No. 16 in the latest in...

  • HDN Athlete Profile: Max Payne

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Montana State University-Northern redshirt-freshman Max Payne is from the deserts of Prescott, Ariz. But he's certainly getting used to the Montana winters. That's because Payne is already one of the elite wrestlers in the NAIA, in what is his first full season at MSU-N. Payne, a two-time Arizona high school state champion, redshirted last season, but is having a breakout first varsity campaign for the Lights. He's had to overcome some injury problems this season, but in the most recent NAIA rankings, Payne is ranked seventh...

  • Ponies run in Lewistown

Daniel Horton - Havre Daily News

After one of the best overall weekends the Havre High boys and girls cross country teams have had collaboratively in a while, the Blue Ponies are poised for another successful weekend. Just last weekend the Central A Blue Pony boys and girls teams finished in the No. 1 spots in the Malta Invite. That included a defeat over the Glasgow Scotties, a year in and year out Class B powerhouse. Havre Daily News/Daniel Horton Havre High runner Ashlynn Van Voast races in the 2010 Havre Invitational. • The very first Super 15

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For years, a faction of people have suggested having an all-class state high school basketball tournament. There's also been years in which state champions from all of the classifications have played non-sanctioned games after the season ends in order to determine the best of the best in Montana. Simply put, in basketball, there's times when classification doesn't mean as much. So in honor of that theory, the Havre Daily News sports staff has decided to put together its own Super 15 boys and girls basketball polls each week....

  • Bison, Missoula Invite await Pony wrestlers

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

Every tournament and dual on the Havre High wrestling team's schedule is a tough one. But this weekend may very well be the toughest three-day stretch the Blue Ponies will see all season. Today the Central A Blue Ponies will dual Great Falls High in Great Falls. And Friday and Saturday, the Ponies will continue in competition as they travel to Missoula for the Missoula Invitational. "This is probably our biggest grind of the year," Havre High head coach Scott Filius said. "The Rocky Mountain (Missoula Invite) is always just a...

  • Ponies welcome Browning

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

Things were just a little bit different for the Havre High girls basketball team this week. Sitting at 1-5 overall and 1-3 in league play, the Central A Blue Ponies are taking a good long look in the mirror. And in preparation for not only their next two games, but maybe even the remainder of the season, the Ponies are focusing on themselves. Tonight the Ponies will host the conference rival Browning Indians at the Havre High gymnasium at 7 p.m. And on Saturday, the Ponies will return to action as they take to the road to...

The rest of the Northern players honored were sophomores, including Matt Bean, Alex Cummings, Nick Griffin, Todd Henrich, Orin Johnson, Tim Jovanovich,...

  • Shockers highlight Frontier's opening week

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sportd editor

One week of Frontier Conference basketball is in the books. And what a week it was. The opening weekend of league play might have more of an effect on the final league standings than any opening week has in years, and it's mainly due to one night in Salt Lake City. On Thursday night, the Montana Tech men's and women's basketball teams went into Salt Lake and shocked the Westminster Griffins, favorites to win league titles on both sides. First, the Tech women pushed around the Griffins and earned an upset victory over the No....

  • Pony grapplers keep their Cut Bank Invite championship

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

The growing trend of the Havre Blue Pony wrestling program is that they know how to win. And capturing their seventh straight team title at the Cut Bank Invitational over the weekend, the Ponies continued to build on that tradition. Friday and Saturday, the Central A Ponies were in Cut Bank, where they captured the No. 1 spot with a team score of 241 points. Glasgow finished in a distant second with 169 points, and Conrad finished in third with 156. "The kids came out of the break and wrestled real well," Havre High head...

  • A big split: Blue Pony boys shock Eagles

Daniel Horton Havre Daily News sports

Two more conference games are in the books for the Havre High boys basketball team, and in dramatic fashion, the Blue Ponies were able to come away with a Central A split over the weekend. On Friday the Ponies hosted the Lewistown Golden Eagles at the Havre High gymnasium where HHS earned the 44-42 win on a last second 3-pointer. But Saturday on the road, the Butte Central Maroons defeated the Ponies a 53-36. "It was big for us to split," Havre High head coach Andy Smith said. "We would have loved to win both games this...

  • Mariani gives us all an unforgettable day

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani is on his way to the first Pro Bowl in his young, but exciting NFL career. However, a stop-over in his home town became what will likely be the biggest event of 2011, even with most of the year still to come. Mariani was at the Havre Holiday Village Mall Sunday to sign autographs and meet fans, and what was originally billed as a three-hour session, turned into a scene unlike any I've seen in all my years covering, being a part of, or just being around the Havre sports landscape. Fans lined the mall early Sunday...

  • Pony wrestlers back in action

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High wrestling team will begin defense of its Cut Bank Invitational team title Friday morning in Cut Bank. The Blue Ponies came back after winter break for a practice and match-up session with wrestlers from Chinook, Chester/J-I, Glasgow and Big Sandy on Monday afternoon at the Mat Corner. Now, HHS head coach Scott Filius' team will get back on the mat for real with two days of action in Cut Bank. HHS comes into this weekend ranked No. 2 in Class A behind Belgrade, and the Ponies have a pair of top-ranked Class A...

  • 2011 Frontier Women's Basketball Preview

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

There's never been a shortage of good women's basketball teams in the Frontier Conference. After all, many consider the league to rival the Golden State Athletic Conference as the best in NAIA Division I. And that balance of power isn't likely to change in the near future. Coming into the first week of the 2011 Frontier season, the league has three ranked teams in LC State, Westminster and Carroll College, while programs at Montana Tech, MSU-Northern and Rocky have also put together strong nonconference runs this season. And...

  • 2011 Frontier Men's Basketball Preview

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Men's basketball in the Frontier Conference has become as powerful as anywhere else in the country. In just the last two seasons, the Frontier has made five NAIA tournament appearances with four different teams, and it was less than two years ago that the Frontier produced a national champion when Rocky Mountain College captured the 2009 NAIA title. And while the faces and names on the back of the jersey's change around the league, the high level of basketball doesn't. Two-time Frontier champion Westminster starts the year...

  • Skylights, Lights well prepared

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

When it comes to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams have similar approaches in preparing for league play. And with their Frontier openers at UGF just two days away, the Lights and Skylights are hoping their philosophy has paid off. Both Northern teams have spent the last two months taking on a rigorous nonconference schedule, mostly built around difficult road and neutral sight games. The hope is, that after the schedule both teams played in November and...
