The Montana State University- Northern men's basketball team is now ranked. The Lights finished last season ranked among the NAIA's Top 25, but it took until this week for the Lights to climb back into the coaches poll. Northern jumped all the way up to No. 19 this week after sweeping Montana Tech and UM-Western over the weekend in Havre. Western was ranked No. 17 last week but dropped to No. 25 after losing to the Lights 69-59 on Saturday night. Three Frontier Conference teams are in the men's Top 25. Westminster College,...
Coming into this weekend's Frontier Conference games at home, the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team was giving up a league-best 59 points per game on defense. And to no one's surprise, the Lights held to true to form, holding both Montana Tech and No. 17 UM-Western under 60 points in an impressive conference sweep that vaulted Northern into a first-place tie in the Frontier standings. "(I'm) very proud of what we accomplished this weekend," MSU-N head coach Shawn Huse said. "We were up against two very...
The Montana State University- Northern women's basketball team is coming off one impressive blowout victory. But with one of the Frontier Conference's most dangerous teams coming to Havre tonight and an old rival in town on Saturday, last week's win over UGF might as well have been last year. Tonight, the Skylights (1-2, 10-9) face the most improved team in the Frontier in Montana Tech, and then they host UM-Western on Saturday night, in what amounts to a pair of critical league games for all three teams. "This is a big...
Spring football is all about improving. It's about improving your team, about improving as players, veterans and young players alike. And if the Sunday's Montana State University-Northern Spring Football Game was any indication, it looks as though the Lights certainly accomplished that this season. MSU-N wrapped up spring drills Sunday at Blue Pony Stadium with a 52- play scrimmage in which the Northern offense scored eight times on a veteran MSU-N defense. The Lights rang up 497 yards of offense on 9.6 yards per play. One...
Last year it was the North Star girls, now it's two more District 9C teams which have already taken a big step towards improving their basketball programs. Thursday night's semifinal round at the District 9C boys and girls tournament in Havre was a special one for a pair of local teams. First, it was the Box Elder Bears who dethroned longtime 9C power Big Sandy in a girls semifinal game. The Bears have been on a roller coaster over the years, but on Thursday night, they finally got to where they really wanted to go. Box...
There will be plenty at stake on Saturday at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The reason so much will be on the line for NAIA wrestlers from around the western U.S. is because the last spots in the NAIA national wrestling tournament will be on the line when teams from MSU-Northern, the University of Great Falls, Southern Oregon, Menlo College, Cal Baptist, Embry-Riddle and Simon Fraser gather in Havre for the NAIA Western Regional qualifying tournament. The tournament, which gets underway at 9 a.m. Saturday will feature six of...
Having already blown out the University of Great Falls in home games last month, both the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams were expecting much tougher games when the Lights and Skylights traveled to UGF. But in the second meeting of the season, it was more of the same as both MSU-N teams took care of UGF Friday night at the McLaughlin Center. The MSU-N women jumped out to a big lead early, then held off the Argos in the second half for a 74-59 win. MSU-N had four players reach double...
The recruiting season has kicked into high gear, and the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team has inked a pair of quality high school wrestlers. On Monday, MSU-N head coach Tyson Thivierge announced the signing of Jared Miller from Kotzebue, AK and Blake Adams from Deer Park, Wash. Miller is slated to wrestle at 165 or 174 pounds for the Lights and will major in Civil Engineering while at MSUN. "Having a talent like Jared is going to help solidify our line-up." Thivierge said. "He is a terror on the mat, one who...
Three Montana State University- Northern women's basketball players have been honored by the Frontier Conference for their outstanding play this season. On Monday night, the league released its annual Frontier All-Conference Team, and three Skylights made the list. The Skylights had two players in juniors Zivile Gaizutyte and Samm Schermele make the first team. Gaizutyte led the Frontier in rebounding while averaging a doubledouble at 12 points and 11 rebounds per game. She also led the league in double- doubles this season....
The Montana State University- Northern Lights had a chance to make plenty of headway in the Frontier Conference standings this weekend on their home floor. Instead, the No. 10 Westminster Griffins got in the way of a home sweep by turning back the No. 21 Lights on Saturday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, allowing MSU-N only a weekend split in Havre. MSU-N did beat Lewis-Clark State on Friday night 68-58 behind tenacious defense and timely 3-point shooting. But all-in-all, Saturday's loss to Westminster left the Lights (...
The college football recruiting season is under way, and the Montana State University-Northern football team is signing an outstanding high school class for 2010. On Thursday afternoon, MSUN head coach Mark Samson announced the signing of nine high school products, including Havre High senior C.J. Evans. Among the signees, Northern inked Arizona prep quarterback Travis Dean. Dean was the starting quarterback for Class 5A state champion Hamilton High School, which went undefeated this past season. The Montana State University- Northern women's basketball team was surging. The Skylights were surging at the end of the regular season, and were surging for much of Wednesday night's Frontier Conference playoff game at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. But in the final moments of a wild game Wednesday night, it was Carroll College which made the final push. Carroll got two crucial turnovers in the final :17 seconds and overtook the Skylights 58-57 to advance to semifinal round, while Northern's season came to end. Northern was...
At the beginning of the week, it looked like there was no chance the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team would be playing at home this weekend. But the weather broke just long enough for the North Stars to put on a pitching display in a sweep of the Lewistown Redbirds Sunday afternoon at Legion Field. The North Stars allowed just five combined hits and one run in a twin bill against the Redbirds, winning by scores of 7-1 and 10-0. "This is what happens when you pitch well, play good defense and make smart...
If their first-round Frontier Conference playoff game was the last time the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team will play in Havre this season, then the Lights gave their home fans a fond fairwell. On Tuesday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse in Havre, the third-seeded Lights downed sixth-seeded Lewis-Clark State 78-71 to advance to the Frontier semifinals. Northern improved to 22-9 on the season and will travel to second-seeded UMWestern on Friday night. "If this was our last game at home, I'm pleased...
The first time the majority of the Havre High boys and girls varsity track teams were on display and the Blue Ponies didn't disappoint. On Thursday afternoon, HHS participated in the Cut Bank Track Meet, and the Pony boys came away with first-place honors, while the HHS girls finished fourth. The Havre boys scored 97 points, finishing 12 points ahead of host Cut Bank. Choteau was third with 67.5 points. Chester/JI scored two points and Rocky Boy scored one. Individually, HHS had just two winners on the day, but the Ponies'...
Rebounding seems like such a simple thing in basketball. But it's not a little thing, and what Havre High junior forward Paighton Gilman did on Monday night was no small feat either — nor was that of her Blue Pony team. With under 30 seconds left in the game, and her team trailing by one point, Gilman grabbed perhaps the biggest offensive rebound in recent Blue Pony history, then put it back in for two points. The board and score was the game-winning basket in Havre High's 38-37 Central A challenge game triumph over h...

To start the week, the North Knights beat Denton 57-36 in Denton behind a game-high 17 points from Shelby Lipp. Britnee Dyrland added 13 points and eight rebounds and Sarah Helmbrecht chipped in with 10 points. Thursday night saw the top-ranked Class B Malta M-Ettes dismantle the Chinook Sugarbeeters 62-16. The Mettes went on a 21-7 run in the first quarter and never looked back. Chinook...
For the second time in two years, the Rocky Boy boys basketball team will go into a state tournament with a perfect record. Only this weekend, the Stars (23-0) will do it at another level. On Saturday night at the Northern B Divisional tournament in Glasgow, Rocky Boy kept its unblemished record going with a 58-48 win over the Shelby Coyotes in the divisional championship game. The win was the second in as many weeks over Shelby in a championship tilt, and it means the Stars will play in their first Class B state tournament...
Endurance. It's a big asset in hockey, and the Havre Ice Hawks high school hockey team proved they had plenty. After playing a game in Great Falls on Saturday morning, the Ice Hawks traveled back to Havre and took on the Billings Bulls in a makeup game Saturday night at the Havre Ice Dome. And while the Bulls had blanked Havre in two games in Billings earlier this month, Ice Hawk's senior Kyle Miller made sure the story had a different ending on Saturday night. Miller racked up six points against the Bulls, including a hat...
