  • Four straight: Lights run down Pronghorns

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It would have been easy for the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team to let down following Wednesday night's big win over Black Hills State. Instead, at least for the first 30 minutes of Thursday night's finale at the AmericInn Classic inside the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Lights played even better. Northern opened Thursday night's game against the University of Lethbridge with seven straight points from junior Shaun Tatarka, and the Lights never looked back, crushing the Pronghorns 77-58. George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

With Rocky Mountain College winning an NAIA national championship, and Westminster College making a great three-year run at the NAIA tournament, there's no question the Frontier Conference is loaded with talented men's basketball players. But the 2011 Frontier season will look a little different. There's plenty of talent in the league and the basketball should be as exciting as ever. But new faces dot the league this year and that will make things even more challenging than ever as 17 2009-2010 Frontier All-Conference...

  • MSU-N earns a quality win

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The MSU-Northern men's basketball team has had some close calls when it comes to playing ranked opponents this season. And one of those close calls was against Black Hills State. Coming into Wednesday night's 83-75 win over the seventh-ranked NAIA DII power BHSU, the Lights had a loss to the Yellowjackets, to go along with losses to now No. 1 Robert Morris and No. 9 Azusa Pacific. So there was no doubt the Lights needed a signature win against a quality opponent. And through hard work on the defensive end, a 50 percent night...

  • Lights take the sting out of Yellowjackets

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Rematches in basketball can always go either way. But in the case of the Montana State University-Northern Lights rematch with Black Hills State, things certainly went the way of the Lights. Northern suffered a heartbreaking, 3-point loss at Black Hills back in November, but on Wednesday night, the Lights exacted a measure of revenge in dramatic fashion, beating BHSU 83-75 on the first day of the AmericInn Classic at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I think the big thing is, we have really gelled even more as a team," Northern j...

MSU-N then wraps up non-league play on Thursday with a game against the University of Lethbridge. Both games will be tune-ups for the Lights (8-4), who begin conference play Jan. 8 in...

Sunday was a rough day for the Tennessee Titans, as they were eliminated from AFC playoff contention with a 34-14 loss at Kansas City. Mariani has surpassed the old Oilers/Titans mark of 1, 317 yards. He now has 1, 416 yards on the year heading into Sunday's finale at Indianapolis....

  • Frontier teams headed for annual floor wars

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

There's just one week left until Frontier Conference basketball teams finally get to start beating on each other. Each and every season, the Frontier is a war of attrition. With so many good teams on both the men's and women's side, it's generally a race to see who will outlast the rest come March. And so far, 2010 has shown that's exactly what might happen when the Frontier season gets here next week. Looking at the first half of the men's season, league favorite Westminster College has posted an 11-1 record heading into the...

  • Hawaii dreams have become a possibilty

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Tennessee Titans may or may not make the NFL playoffs this season. And while the Titans have only a slim chance of doing so, there's still a possibility that former Havre High star Marc Mariani could be still have one more game left in his rookie season — even if the Titans don't make the playoffs and the regular season ends on Jan. 2. Back in July and August, mentioning the words Pro Bowl in conjunction with Mariani's name seemed unfathomable. After all, as a seventh-round draft pick of the Titans in 2010, and coming f...

Northern beat the Eagles 74-43 Wednesday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse in Havre, but the win didn't come without a few tough moments. "I think any time you play a team that you certainly have a big advantage over, you have the chance to not be as crisp as you'd like to be," MSU-N head coach Shawn Huse said.
