If I would have known what was going to transpire last Saturday, I would have loved to have the power to be in two places at once. As I was watching the Montana State University-Northern football team trounce the UM-Western Bulldogs in Dillon Saturday afternoon, the Havre Blue Ponies were doing the same to the Whitefish Bulldogs at Blue Pony Stadium. Yes it was quite a day for football in Havre, and it's ironic that the mascot who took the brunt of Havre's football prowess was the same, even though the games were played...

  • Hi-Line Football Roundup

George Ferguson Havre Daily News Sports Editor

It was a light opening weekend for area high school football, but one Hi-Line team certainly made a big splash. In their season-opening game, the Chinook Sugarbeeters served notice that they are going to be a force to be reckoned with this fall. In a Northern C showdown Saturday afternoon, the Beeters went on the road and crushed perennial Northern C powerhouse, the Centerville Miners. The Beeters routed the Miners 47-16. Chinook feel behind 8-0 in the first quarter, but the Beeters then ran off 24 unanswered points and... Full story

George Ferguson Havre Daily News Sports Editor

For some area high school volleyball teams, Saturday was a busy first day. Several local teams got plenty of court time at the Malta Invitational, while the Chester/J-I Hawks suffered a tough defeat at the hands of a District 6C West rival. In Malta, Chinook, Harlem and Rocky Boy got the season started against several tough Class B schools. The Malta tournament featured each team playing seven round-robin games to 25 in the morning, then a bracketed tournament in the afternoon. Chinook was the highest seed of the three local...

Also in attendance was Malta, which wound up capturing the team title, as well as two teams from Medicine Hat, Alberta and a second team from Havre....

  • Havre's season ends in heartbreak

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The Havre American Legion baseball team had a goal entering this weekend's Northern District Tournament. That goal was to not only win a district championship, but to make sure they qualified for the Class A state tournament. And the North Stars were playing more than good enough to achieve that goal in the weeks leading up to this past weekend's tournament in Fort MacLeod, Alberta. But things didn't go exactly to plan as Havre lost one heartbreaking game which kept it from a berth in the title tilt. Then the North Stars ran...

  • NFL dream takes Mariani to the Music City

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

Knowing it was unlikely he was going to be selected at any time during the first two days of the 2010 NFL Draft, former Havre High and University of Montana superstar Marc Mariani had a long wait before he found out his NFL future. But, as the saying goes, good things come to those who wait. Mariani, a two-time Class A All- State football player at Havre High, and a two-time FCS First Team All American selection as a wide receiver and kick returner at Montana was picked by the Tennessee Titans in the seventh round of the... Full story

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It may have been the first night of the 2010 NAIA volleyball season, but the Montana State University-Northern Skylights showed they have what it takes to turn things around quickly. After dropping their season-opening match to Concordia College at the UGF/Carroll Tournament Thursday afternoon in Great Falls, the Skylights reversed their fortunes and bested nationally-ranked Jamestown College in four games to earn a split on the night. The Skylights beat the Jimmies by scores of 25-19, 21-25, 25-19 and 26-24. The difference...

  • Mariani moving forward

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani has now played in a real NFL football game. But before he finds out if he'll be making any appearances in regular season games for the Tennessee Titans this season, he's got three more games and plenty of practices to go. Such is life for a rookie from the University of Montana in and NFL training camp. Not only is the future for rookies like Mariani and so many others around the league uncertain, but life in training camp is a whole other way of life. Still, Mariani says he's adjusted well, and he hasn't even...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

There's always a few surprises when it comes to the District 9C girls basketball tournament. But as area teams get set to invade Havre for the 2010 9C girls tournament this week, things have never been more wide open. Big Sandy has had a stranglehold on the 9C girls championship for the better of a decade, and when the Pioneers weren't on top, it was the Rocky Boy Morning Stars. But Big Sandy comes into this week's tournament at the Havre High gymnasium as the No. 3 seed, something a little unfamiliar to the Pioneers, and...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

"Good weekend of baseball," Havre head coach Steve Fanning...

  • Frontier has great players in the trenches

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

With so many good quarterbacks and running backs in the Frontier Conference, a key to staying competitive in football games is having a good defensive line. Last season, the Montana State University- Northern Lights played without two all-American defensive linemen, while on the other side of the coin, the Carroll College Fighting Saints had a plethora of all-conference performers on the d-line. Most of Carroll's standouts graduated last spring, while Northern gets its defensive-end duo back for the 2010 season. Returning to...

  • The summer of Beaver Creek Golf Course

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

Mother Nature does its share of controlling the game of golf. Weather, no matter if its rain, wind, cold, heat or snow, it can all get in the way of a golfer's plans, and it most certainly has its affects on a golf course. But nowhere has that fact been more evident this summer than Havre's Beaver Creek Golf Course. An unusually heavy amount of rain fell on the Hi-Line area late in the spring and that rain, mixed with the usual snow melt and runoff from another harsh winter created flooding conditions this year unlike... Full story

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor, [email protected]

The first full week of high school volleyball on the Hi-Line proved beneficial for some teams, while others found things very challenging. In Chinook on Saturday, the Chinook Sugarbeeters came out of pool play of a solid pool play performance, but were beaten in the first round of bracket play, 2-0 by former Class B rival Malta. George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor, [email protected]

If every young football player's dream is to one day see his name on an NFL roster, or on the back of an NFL jersey, then chalk that up to a growing list of dreams former Havre Blue Pony Marc Mariani has made come true. While Mariani enjoyed, and made the most of his first NFL training camp and four preseason games with the Tennessee Titans, by no means was his goal for things to end when the Titans broke training camp. And now, that dream won't end. On Saturday afternoon, Mariani become an official member of the Titans' 53-m...

  • Mariani sparkles in final audtion

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor, www.havredailynews.com

If the key for a seventh-round draft pick from the Football Championship Subdivision to making an NFL 53-man roster is performing at a high level time and time again in the preseason, then former Havre High three-sport star Marc Mariani is certainly worthy of making the Tennessee Titans' opening-day roster. Over the course of the last month, whether it be practice, scrimmages or in preseason games, Mariani has come up clutch every time a ball has been thrown his way, on almost every kick return and in the all-important... Full story

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

For two teams, the Frontier Conference football season is already a week old. For the rest, the race for the Frontier championship and a berth in the 2010 NAIA playoffs starts Saturday. The Frontier is off to an interesting start with the Montana State University-Northern Lights beating the UM-Western Bulldogs 20-3 last Saturday in Dillon.
