Bull riders came to Havre in search of prize money and the perfect ride, as well as to help raise money for the Montana State University-Northern Rodeo Team. And this year's Bull Dazzle didn't disappoint. On Friday and Saturday at the Great Northern Fairground's Bigger Better Barn, 60 riders competed in two night's of bull riding, with nearly $4,000 on the line, and there was plenty of excitement for bull riding fans in the area. Dustin Jenkins captured the average with a total score of 173.50, just edging out Steven Turner,...
With good weather holding, the Montana State University-Northern football team took full advantage. In their first full scrimmage of the spring, the Lights moved the ball well on offense, made several big plays, and all-in-all had a strong first week of drills, which concluded with Sunday's scrum at the Havre High practice fields. In a the situational, almost 90-minute scrimmage on Sunday afternoon, the Lights' offense scored four times and had five big plays. The battle for starting quarterback position is underway at...
Marc Mariani has called Montana home for the last 23 years. But over the last two years, Mariani has spent a lot of time in the state of Tennessee, first, playing in two FCS title games with the Montana Grizzlies, then with workouts for the Tennessee Titans. Now, he'll try to make Nashville his new home. Mariani, a seventh-round draft pick of the Titans back in April, is about to embark on a brand new, and most harrowing journey — his first NFL training camp. And in order to be able to take up residence permanently in the M...
Montana State University-Northern women's basketball coach Chris Mouat is losing a top-notch assistant coach to an NCAA Division I program. But Mouat has found an excellent replacement. Longtime MSU-N assistant Anna Bateman recently accepted a job at Big Sky Conference member Northern Colorado University, and Mouat recently announced the hiring of former Malta prep star and University of Montana basketball standout Juliann Keller. Keller replaces Bateman, who worked as the lead assistant in the Skylight program the past five...
The highly-anticipated baseball showdown between perhaps two of the top teams in the American Legion Class A's Northern District turned out to be a bumpy ride for the Havre North Stars. On Monday afternoon at Legion Field, the North Stars were swept by the Great Falls Electrics, solidifying Great Falls as the top team in the league standings in the process. Pitching wasn't Havre's issue in its two losses on Monday, and at times, neither was hitting. Instead, it was defense and a failure to move runners across the plate which...
This week in Hi-Line girls high school basketball saw some excitement, and disappointment. Friday and Saturday's snowstorm across the state brought plenty of cancellations, but there was hoops still played. On Thursday night, the in a new Class B rivalry game, the upstart Harlem Wildcats downed the Rocky Morning Stars 64-46 in Harlem. The Wildcats broke open a 27-24 game in the third quarter via a 16-8 run. Harlem carried that momentum into the fourth quarter and went on to win going away. Hypatia Getten scored a game-high...
If the newly formed Class AA Great Falls Chargers are supposed to be the best American Legion baseball team in Montana this summer, than the Havre North Stars can feel good about where they're at this spring. On Sunday afternoon at Legion Field in Havre, the North Stars made their home debut, and although they dropped both games of the nonconference doubleheader, the scores didn't reflect how the North Stars played, or pitched. "Overall, I'm happy," Havre head coach Steve Fanning said. "We had a couple of bad innings in the...
Two down, two to go. And so far, so good. Marc Mariani made his ESPN Monday Night Football debut a memorable one, and he did it a little sooner than expected. On Monday night at LP Field in Tennessee, Mariani played almost the entire game in one form or another, and he got in the box score in several different ways as the Tennessee Titans beat the Arizona Cardinals 24-10 in the second preseason game for both teams. Mariani's first half was reserved for special teams, but he again stood out racking up a solo tackle on a punt...
It wasn't easy, but the Rocky Boy Stars are still unbeaten after the their first District 1B tournament. George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected] The Havre American Legion baseball team is in the midst of one of its busiest parts of the 2010 schedule. Havre opened the tournament with a 5-3 win over the Lewistown Redbirds on Friday. The North Stars road a complete-game pitching performance from Roman Surber as...
To say the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will be happy to be on its own maroon and gold mat tonight might be an understatement. The No. 13 Lights haven't wrestled at home since the first week of December, and not only have they been on the road, but they have been riddled with injuries which have left them depleted. Still, the season marches on and tonight at 7, the Lights will take to the mat against the Northwest College Trappers at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The Trappers are one of the premier powers...

Summer time is about to give way to the volleyball court. And once again, the Frontier Conference should be a premier power in NAIA women's volleyball. Last season, Carroll College, Lewis-Clark State and the University of Great Falls tied for the regular season Frontier title, while LC State grabbed the league crown. All three teams advanced to the regional tournament, and all three teams should be at or near the top of the Frontier in 2010. For the Montana State University-Northern Skylights, the time has finally come where...
After an 0-2 start to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team needed a win. Not only did the Skylights need a victory to erase last weekend's difficult road trip, but they needed to stay within striking distance in the early conference race. Northern accomplished those missions and then some on Saturday night by crushing the University of Great Falls Argos 63-36 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I was very pleased with how we played for 30 minutes tonight," MSU-N head...
His team came up two points shy of a victory, but on Saturday night at Quest Field in Seattle, Marc Mariani left the playing surface all smiles. Mariani made his NFL debut in front of more than 65,000 fans Saturday night as the Seattle Seahawks edged the Tennessee Titans 20-18 in the preseason opener for both teams. Never-the-less, the preseason is more about getting ready for the rigors of an NFL campaign, and in rookies' like Mariani's case, getting their feet wet in a live game, and even more so, making plays in those...
Pitching has been a trademark of the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team all season long. But now that Havre's bats have become more than consistent, the North Stars are becoming awfully dangerous. And on Wednesday afternoon at Legion Field, the North Stars showed yet again just how dangerous a team they've become by sweeping the Vauxhall Spurs with great pitching and bigtime hitting in a Northern District doubleheader. The North Stars beat Vauxhall by scores of 7-2 and 11-7 to run their current winning streak to...
The race is on. It's now just one month from postseason basketball play, and things are going to get interesting in girls hoops along the Hi-Line. In the loss, Box Elder got 12 points from Aricka Wolfcheif. Thursday night also saw...
What a start. First the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team matched its 2009 win total in its first three weeks of the season. The Skylights went an outstanding 7-3 this preseason. And on Thursday night in Butte, Northern kept things rolling by sweeping the Montana Tech Orediggers in the Frontier Conference opener for both teams. The Skylights beat the Orediggers by scores of 25-18, 29-27 and 25-20 to go to 1-0 in league play. Northern finishes its first conference road trip tonight against UM-Western in...
The Montana State University- Northern volleyball team has added two new recruits to an already outstanding recruiting class. Hutcheson attended high school at Crocus Plains Secondary School where her varsity team won back-to-back provincial championships the past two seasons....
For the Montana State University- Northern men's and women's basketball teams, October began a season of two teams searching for a new identity. Now, the Lights and Skylights start a new journey as Frontier Conference play begins tonight in Salt Lake City. The MSU-N women kick off the Frontier schedule tonight at 5:30 against the No. 20 Westminster College Griffins. Westminster (11-4) is the defending Frontier regular season champion having gone a perfect 14-0 in league play a year ago. Included in that run was two wins over...
There is no doubt, the 2010 Frontier Conference football season will feature a league loaded with individual talent. But perhaps no position in the league is more talented from top to bottom then the most prestigious position of them all — quarterback. And this season, the Frontier might have the best crop of quarterbacks in all of NAIA football. Heading into the season, which gets under way on the final Saturday in August, five of the six teams in the league return their starting signal callers, and all five of those p...
If you're looking for a fix of high school volleyball, then the Hi-Line is the place to be this weekend. Not one, but two major tournaments will be going on this weekend with the Chinook Invitational and the North Star Showcase. The Chinook Invite will run today and Saturday at the Chinook gymnasium, and will feature several quality Class B teams like Malta and Glasgow, as well as Wolf Point. The Class C ranks will also be well-represented with Chinook, Chester/J-I and Valier in attendance. The Chinook Invitational will...
The season couldn't have started any better for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team. Now, the Skylights want to keep the momentum going. After going 3-1 at the Montana Tech Tournament last weekend in Butte, the Skylights are off to a 4-2 start against tough nonconference competition. But with the Frontier Conference season looming, MSU-N has one more challenge ahead of it. Today and Saturday, the Skylights are in Dickinson, N.D., for four matches at a tournament hosted by the Dickinson State Blue Hawks, and...
The UM-Western Bulldogs are already 0-1 on the season — and things don't get any easier. The Montana State University-Northern Lights went to Western last Saturday and opened the Frontier Conference season with a 20-3 win in Dillon. And while the Lights have a week off, the Bulldogs have to go on the road to face Big Sky Conference and Football Championship Subdivision member Idaho State on Saturday. The Bengals are picked to finish last in the Big Sky this season, but the and NAIA/FCS matchup isn't an easy way for any N...
