  • Lights look to rally at RMC

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

If there was ever a more difficult time to try and get an all-important road win, this Saturday would be the time. The Montana State University-Northern football team has a tall order in front of it when the Lights (3-5, 3-5) travel to Billings Saturday to take on the Rocky Mountain College Battlin' Bears in a Frontier Conference rematch. The Bears (4-4, 4-5) beat the Lights 34-23 back in September in Havre, and now Northern will try and reverse its fortunes. But the Lights will do so in the wake of a stunning 39-36 loss at...

  • George Ferguson Column: An epic tale of two different halves

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It's almost like the Montana State University-Northern Lights and Eastern Oregon Mountaineers played two different football games over the course of 60 minutes Saturday afternoon at Blue Pony Stadium. That's just how different each half of play really was in EOU's 39-36 win in Havre. In the first 30 minutes, the Lights looked like one of the best teams in the Frontier Conference as they staked themselves to a seemingly insurmountable 34-7 lead. Northern's redshirt freshman quarterback Derek Lear looked like a savvy veteran,...

  • MSU-Northern Game Day Notebook

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It's hard to find moral victories in what happened to the Montana State University-Northern Lights Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium. The Lights got victory snatched from them when it looked like a sure thing as Eastern Oregon came back to win 39-36. But in looking at the first half performance by Northern quarterback Derek Lear, it's hard not to think of what the Lights will look like a year from now and even farther. Lear was a highly sought after Frontier Conference recruit coming out of Class B Fairfield in both football and...

  • Comeback Mounted

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For one half of football, the normally explosive Eastern Oregon Mountaineers looked anything but, while the Montana State University-Northern Lights dominated. For another half however, the Mounties looked almost unstoppable. EOU overcame a dominating first half in which the Lights led 34-7 by outscoring Northern 32-2 in the second half en route to a dramatic 39-36 come-from-behind win Saturday afternoon at Blue Pony Stadium in Havre. The thrilling victory by EOU spoiled Northern's senior day and snapped MSU-N's current...

  • MSU-N spikers swept by LC State

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

As well as the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team was playing coming into Thursday night's match in Lewiston, Idaho, the Lewis-Clark State Warriors were just playing that much better. Having already lost to LC State in a three-game sweep last month in Havre, the Skylights suffered the same fate on Thursday night. The nationally-ranked Warriors defeated MSU-N in three games by scores of 25-13, 25-20 and 25-20. LC State improved to a perfect 12-0 in the Frontier Conference and an outstanding 18-1 overall. MSU-N d...

  • Lights hit the mat

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

After four preseason duals and a month-long grind of preparation, the Montana State University-Northern wrestling team will finally do it for real tonight. The Lights, who are ranked No. 12 in the NAIA preseason poll, will open their season tonight at 7 when they host the always-tough North Idaho Cardinals at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. MSU-N will start the season without No. 2 ranked Evan Hinebauch a returning NAIA All-American at 184 pounds, as he recovers from an early-season injury. But, with a talented group returning...

  • Skylights crush LaSierra

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

If the first basket of the season is any indication, then the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team has good things ahead of it. Senior Samm Schermele nailed a 3-pointer in the opening seconds of MSU-N's season debut against LaSierra College Thursday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, and the Skylights never looked back. MSU-N raced past LaSierra 101-29 in the first of three games at the Duck Inn/JDRF Classic. "Everyone got to play a lot of minutes, and everyone played hard and contributed," MSU-N...

  • Northern seniors will be missed

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Time flies when you're playing college football. And on Saturday at Blue Pony Stadium, the 2010 Montana State University-Northern senior class will play their last home football game of their careers. Six Lights will be honored before Saturday's game against Eastern Oregon, which kicks off at 12 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. And while it's a small class, all of the Lights who are playing their last game Saturday have had a lasting impact on the Northern program. "It's a small group of seniors this year," MSU-N head coach Mar...

  • MSU-N Game Day Feature: A bright career

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Matt Stuart has seen a lot of footballs flying through the air in between the lines at Blue Pony Stadium. And the senior wide receiver for the MSU-Northern Lights has brought down plenty of those balls as well. And Stuart's overtime game-winning touchdown catch two weeks ago against UM-Western was as memorable as it gets, but he's hoping it won't be his last. Stuart has one last game at Blue Pony Stadium, Saturday against the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers, and, like he's always done for the Lights, he'll try to go out by...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson havredailynews com

It was a difficult night all the way around for the Havre High girls basketball team. On Thursday night at the CMR Fieldhouse in Great Falls, the Blue Ponies could never get on track offensively, while the CMR Rustlers made it look easy in a 56-18 nonconference win. HHS surrendered 20 points to CMR's Jordan Bagley, and the Ponies could never recover from scoring just six points in the first 16 minutes of the game. The Rustlers opened the game by outscoring HHS 14-4 in the first quarter. The lead grew to 27-6 at intermission...

Havre High sends four golfers to state George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor For years, it was the Havre High boys golf team which stole the show when it came to Ponies on the links. But after Saturday's performance at the Central A Meet in Lewistown, it appears girls golf is on the comeback trail at HHS. The Ponies have struggled with numbers on the girls side since the 2008 season, but on Saturday, three HHS girls made a statement by reaching the Class A state tournament through qualifying at Judith Shadows Golf...

The Montana State University- Northern men's basketball team is now ranked. The Lights finished last season ranked among the NAIA's Top 25, but it took until this week for the Lights to climb back into the coaches poll. Western was ranked No. 17 last week but dropped to No. 25 after losing to the Lights 69-59 on Saturday night. Three Frontier Conference teams are in the men's Top 25. Westminster College,...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson havredailynews com

The Wildcats broke open a 27-24 game in the third quarter via a 16-8 run. Harlem carried that momentum into the fourth quarter and went on to win going away. Hypatia Getten scored a game-high...

  • MSU-N Football 2010: Lights offense

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

One thing which held the Montana State University-Northern football team back last season was getting in the end zone. The Northern offense moved the ball well at times, but the Lights didn't score enough points, finishing last in the conference in scoring offense in 2009. But with a new season just two days away, the MSU-N offense in 2010 is looking to put the past behind it, and the Lights have the talent and the weapons to do just that. "I'm really pleased with how things have gone so far this fall," sixth-year MSU-N head...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

If a summit meeting in Dickinson, N.D. is any indication of the future, the Frontier Conference good look a lot different come next year. • Hot: Jaycees Demo Derby closes the fair

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The heat of a warm summer's night was certainly intense. But it wasn't nearly as an intense as the heat inside the Great Northern Fair Arena on Sunday night. As always, the annual Jaycees Demolition Derby closed out the Great Northern Fair, and Sunday's demolition derby closed the 2010 Great Northern Fair with plenty of fireworks. A capacity crowd of 1,736 fans watched 10 drivers reach the championship heat in Sunday night's derby. And of those 10 drivers, two stood out. Ryan Erickson, the 2009 derby champion battled Ben...

  • MSU-N Football 2010: Lights defense

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For the better part of six years now, the Montana State University-Northern has built solid football seasons around an aggressive, stingy defense. Northern has typically been statistically one of the top defenses in the Frontier Conference year and year out. However, injuries hampered the Lights in 2010, especially on the defensive side of the ball. But with key veterans back, exciting young players and some tweaks to their defensive scheme under new defensive coordinator Jake Eldridge, the Lights are looking like they could...

  • HHS golfers finish strong

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Although things don't get any easier on the second day of the Great Falls Invitational golf tournament, the Havre High golfers in attendance made some important strides. The prestigious, 36-hole Great Falls Invite wrapped up on Tuesday with 18 holes at Eagles Falls Golf Course and several Blue Ponies shot solid scores. The Havre boys brought just three golfers to the tournament, so the Ponies weren't eligible for the team scoring. But Blue Pony junior Simon McCann had a strong second rond. McCann fired an 85 at Eagle Falls,...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson havredailynews com

The Montana State University- Northern women's basketball team is coming off one impressive blowout victory. But with one of the Frontier Conference's most dangerous teams coming to Havre tonight and an old rival in town on Saturday, last week's win over UGF might as well have been last year. Tonight, the Skylights (1-2, 10-9) face the most improved team in the Frontier in Montana Tech, and then they host UM-Western on Saturday night, in what amounts to a pair of critical league games for all three teams. "This is a big...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor gferguson havredailynews com

After an 0-2 start to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team needed a win. Northern accomplished those missions and then some on Saturday night by crushing the University of Great Falls Argos 63-36 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I was very pleased with how we played for 30 minutes tonight," MSU-N head...
