  • MSU-N basketball teams make schedule changes

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams haven't had many home games in recent weeks. And there are some changes to the upcoming MSU-N schedules. The Lights and Skylights were set to face Concordia College of Alberta on Dec. 21 in Havre, but those games have been moved up to this Sunday. The Skylights will square off against Concordia at 6 p.m. Sunday night and the Lights will follow at 8 p.m. Both Northern teams will still take on King's University of Edmonton, Alberta on Dec. 22 in Havre....

  • Latest winter storm disrupts area sports

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Turn back the calendar one full year and you would almost have the same exact scenario. For the second straight December, the first full weekend of the Montana high school winter sports season was rudely interrupted by Mother Nature. The brutal winter storm which ravaged the Hi-Line and many other parts of Montana on Friday morning had a profound effect on sports this weekend. The Havre High boys and girls season-opening basketball games at Malta were called off due to extremely poor travel conditions along Highway 2 East on...

  • Blue Pony swimmers jump into their own pool

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

They may have had to wait an extra week, but the Havre Blue Pony swim teams won't have to wait to race any longer. On Saturday, the Havre high boys and girls swim teams open 2010-11 season with the Havre Invitational at the Havre Community Pool. The Blue Ponies were scheduled to open last weekend in Kalispell, but HHS's Senior Ball, and a lack of swimmers having the required 10 practices to compete forced HHS to push back the start of the season. So instead of competing short-handed in Kalispell, the Blue Ponies will get a...

  • Hoops Heat: NAC hits MSU-Northern Friday and Saturday

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

High school basketball hits the floor running all over Montana this weekend. But perhaps nowhere can fans see so many good boys and girls teams in one place than in Havre Friday and Saturday. The Native American Classic is annual tournament featuring some of the best Montana reservation schools, including Hi-Line clubs Harlem, Rocky Boy and Box Elder. The tournament gets underway Friday morning at 10 a.m. with the Box Elder boys taking on the Browning junior varsity team. The game is the first of six games on Friday and six m...

  • Mariani working on the art of the return

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani knows what it's like to return big kicks and big punts in big situations. After all, before Mariani burst onto the scene returning kicks for the Tennessee Titans this season, he had one of the most prolific careers at the University of Montana doing the same thing. And he always had a flare for the dramatic. Mariani returned perhaps the most important kickoff in Griz history when his team was trailing big to South Dakota State in the first round of the 2009 FCS playoffs. Mariani, who'd only returned three...

  • Ice Hawks drop two games in Billings

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a tough start to the season for the Havre High School hockey team. Now having played four games against the Billings Bulls, the Ice Hawks are off to an 0-4 start. This past weekend, the Ice Hawks lost two games to Billings on the road. Havre fell to the Bulls via a shutout on Friday night, then scored just one goal against the Bulls on Saturday. In Friday night's game, the Bulls shut out the Ice Hawks 7-0. Havre tried to rally on Saturday, but the Bulls again shut the Havre offense down in a 7-1 win. Havre's only...

  • Big hoops weekend ahead

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The long-awaited high school basketball season got off to a quiet start this past weekend, with just a handful of games on the slate. But starting Thursday, area teams will start to make some noise on the Hi-Line. There is a full docket of boys and girls high school basketball action this coming weekend with tournaments in Havre and Big Sandy, as well as the Havre High basketball teams opening their season. In Havre, the Native American Classic will take center stage Friday and Saturday at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. Over...

  • Area gridders earn All Six-Man honors

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

After an exciting season of Six-Man football on the Hi-Line, several area football players have earned postseason honors. The Big Sandy Pioneers came within three points of playing for the Six-Man state championship, and three Pioneers were rewarded for outstanding play on the field with the release of the Montana All Six-Man Team for the North, East and Central Divisons. After making the playoffs this year as well, two North Star Knights also made the list. Leading the way for Big Sandy is running back Ryan Miller, who was...

  • Fort Belknap tourney set for Harlem

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

A full slate of high school basketball is still a week away, but the Harlem High School gym will be abuzz Saturday and Sunday with college hoops. Fort Belknap College is hosting a Montana Tribal College Basketball League men's and women's tournament this weekend in Harlem. The Ft. Belknap...

  • Northern women venture to Salt Lake City

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Last weekend's losses to a pair of NCAA Division II teams in Bellingham, Wash., didn't count towards the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team's overall record. But they counted for plenty, and while the exhibition games won't show up on Northern's record, the Skylights haven't won a basketball game since they beat Dickinson State 59-50 back on Nov. 5 in Havre. That's something the Skylights (3-5) and head coach Chris Mouat are hoping to change this weekend when they play a pair of games at the...

  • MSU-N men back after a long break

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been three full weeks since the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team has been on the court. And since the No. 25 Lights suffered a pair of heartbreaking losses in Las Vegas the last time out, three weeks may have seemed like an eternity. But tonight and Saturday, the Lights (4-3) will finally get their chance to get back to their winning ways after suffering losses to nationally-ranked Robert Morris of Illinois and Vanguard University by a combined five points in Las Vegas. Northern is in Camrose,...

  • Making waves: HHS looks for more success

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The years change, the athletes change from season to season, but one thing that just doesn't seem to change is how dominant the Havre High swimming program is. And the 2010-11 season looks to be another big one for the Blue Pony boys and girls. HHS won't open its season for another week, but the Pony swimmers have been hard at work. Coming into the season, the Havre High boys are the defending Class A champions, while the HHS girls will strive to get their thrown back after they didn't win the state championship for the...

  • Lights get ready for Battle of the Rockies

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team is off to a great start in 2010. The Lights have already qualified a good number of wrestlers for the NAIA national tournament in the spring, and have done well on the mat despite dealing with injuries to standouts like nationally-ranked Max Payne at 174 pounds and Ethan Hinebauch at 165 pounds, among others. But starting Friday afternoon in Great Falls, things are going to get much tougher for the No. 10 Lights. Northern heads to Great Falls to participate in the Battle...

  • Right at home in the Music City

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Nashville is a long way from Havre. In fact, it's not just miles which separates the two cities, it's culture, it's weather, it's geography, it's history and so many other things that make the Music City so different from Marc Mariani's home town. But that doesn't mean Mariani isn't finding it easy to make a home in Nashville. In fact, it's just the opposite. The transition on the football field has been a relatively smooth one for the former three-sport star at Havre High — even though LP Field holds about 70,000 more f...

  • George Ferguson Column: It's been quite the run in Chinook

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

To say things are about to come full circle for Chinook High School athletics would be an understatement. The run the school has been on in sports the last year didn't start with the historic football state championship back on Nov. 20 and it isn't likely to end there either. Chinook sports are hot right now and it doesn't look like the Sugarbeeters are cooling off anytime soon. Last February, the Chinook wrestling team captured the Class C state championship of the B-C state tournament in Billings. That feat, which was the...

  • Wrestling fans finally about to get their fix

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team has already provided Havre with some great moments on the mat this year. But this weekend, the high school grapplers will join the party. Friday marks the first official day of competition for the high school winter sports season, and Havre will be the hotbed for wrestling's opening weekend. Like always, Havre High will play host to the season-opening Havre Invitational, which starts Friday and runs through Saturday afternoon at the HHS gymnasium. The Havre Invite is...

  • Mariani continues to produce

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

With the Tennessee Titans struggling to their fourth straight loss Sunday afternoon in Houston, former Havre High star Marc Mariani kept on producing. Mariani added to his NFL leading punt return totals and had another outstanding day returning kickoffs, despite the Titans falling to the Houston Texans 20-0. Mariani returned four kickoffs for 93 yards, including two that went for 30 yards each. He also returned two punts for 25 yards for an average of 12.5 yards, which put him near his season total for the year. His day...

  • Skylights drop exhibition games

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Neither game counted, but both will certainly make the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team better. On Friday and Saturday in Bellingham, Wash., the Skylights dropped a pair of exhibition games to NCAA Division II opponents from the GNAC, the same league Montana State-Billings plays in. And while the Skylights may have struggled to keep pace with both St. Martins University and perennial DII power Western Washington, they didn't play poorly either, and both games will have lasting benefits as the Skylight...

  • Carroll's Wagner named Frontier's offensive MVP

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Six years at Carroll College and his brilliant career isn't over yet. But former Havre Blue Pony Gary Wagner is finally reaping some of the benefits of his hard work and dedication to the Saints. On Wednesday night, Wagner was announced as the Co-Offensive MVP of the Frontier Conference, sharing the honor with Rocky Mountain QB Kasey Peters. Wagner and Peters also shared First-Team All-Conference honors at quarterback. Wagner has battled injury throughout his career at Carroll but has put back-to-back great seasons together,...

  • Nine Lights honored by the Frontier

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Nine Montana State University-Northern Lights were honored for outstanding success this season on the football field, while a former Havre Blue Pony garnered one of the Frontier Conference's highest honors. On Wednesday night, the Frontier Conference released its 2010 All-Conference teams and postseason awards, and nine Lights were selected all conference, while former Havre High and current Carroll College quarterback Gary Wagner shared the league's offensive MVP with Rocky Mountain College QB Kasey Peters. The Lights, who...

  • Bring on the high school winter games

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Montana high school football season officially ended on Saturday. And that also marked the official end of the fall sports season. But before the snow settled on what has been a dramatic fall campaign, in gyms and wrestling rooms all across the Hi-Line, the winter sports season was already quietly getting underway. Last Thursday, Havre High officially kicked off the winter sports season with the first day of wrestling and swimming practice, while Monday was the first day schools could begin basketball practice. So it won't...

  • Lights claim two wrestling titles in Spokane

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team built some momentum for the early part of its season when the Lights forged a dramatic tie with the University of Great Falls last Thursday night in Havre. On Saturday, the Lights continued to build on that momentum. At a tournament in Spokane, Wash., MSU-N had two individual champions, put three wrestlers in the finals and placed five wrestlers overall. The finish in Spokane now gives Northern eight wrestlers who are already qualified for the NAIA national tournament which...

  • George Ferguson Column: For Chinook Saturday was the stuff of legends

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The weather is nasty out. It almost looks and feels like winter has been here for months already. And while it's been said by many traditionalists that football is a game that's supposed to be played in cold, snow, mud and ice, and not indoors or on warm, sunny days, this weekend was a bit much. And that's precisely another reason why what the Chinook Sugarbeeters accomplished Saturday will forever be etched into Hi-Line football lore. When the Beeters beat Wibaux 74-6 for the Class C state championship Saturday afternoon in...

  • Powerful Black Hills clips MSU-N women

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Dakota Athletic Conference is very good in women's basketball. And the Montana State University-Northern Skylights are finding that out as of late. Not that the Skylights didn't already know as they play one of the most difficult nonconference schedules in the NAIA each year, but after falling to fourth-ranked Black Hills State 61-54 Friday night in Great Falls, MSU-N has now lost four straight games to DAC opponents and three straight on the road. Northern (3-5) was in Great Falls Friday night to play one game in the Tow...

  • Another one: Mariani scores again

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani wasted little time cementing the fact that he's the top punt returner in the AFC. On Sunday afternoon, in Tennessee's 19-16 overtime loss to the Washington Redskins, the former Havre Blue Pony sparked the Titans with an 87-yard punt return for a touchdown. It is Mariani's second-career touchdown in what5 is becoming an incredible rookie season for the former two-time University of Montana All-American. It tied for the second-longest punt return for a touchdown in franchise history, equaling Billy Johnson's...
