George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Having to wait an extra week to play the first game of the season couldn't have been easy for the Havre High boys basketball team. But having to then open the season against a pair of Central A rivals, on the road was even more of a chore. And that's what makes HHS's weekend split with Belgrade and Livingston so impressive. The Ponies faltered against the Panthers Friday night in Belgrade, losing 69-52, but rebounded nicely and took care of the Rangers, 58-52 Saturday in Livingston. Against Belgrade, the start of the game...

HHS lost in Belgrade 52-43 on Friday night, but quickly rebounded to beat Livingston 54-40 on Saturday. "Our kids did a really good job," Havre high head coach Dustin Kraske said. Class AA Great Falls High topped the team title with 195.5 points, a mere six points ahead of Central A power Belgrade. Gl...

  • Finally, it's his turn

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Former Havre Blue Pony Gary Wagner has done just about everything a high school and college quarterback can do on a football field. After all, Wagner has been taking snaps at QB between Havre High and Carroll for the last seven years. He's a Class A state champion, he holds many Havre High and MHSA passing records, he played in the prestigious Montana East/West Shrine Game, and now he's even a Frontier Conference MVP. And that's just the short list of all that Wagner has achieved in his illustrious football career. Wagner...

  • Versatile Schwenke sparks MSU-N

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

MSU-Northern junior guard Laramie Schwenke has been having a good season for the Skylights. And no one is more excited to be on the floor than Schwenke herself, as she's had to battle injury problems in both her freshman and sophomore seasons at MSU-N. But on Thursday night, in Northern's 86-70 win over UGF in Havre, Schwenke, the former Malta prep star showed just how far she's come, just how versatile a player she is, and how important she is to MSU-N's success this season. Senior guard Taylor Keller went down with an...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

A week off, a first home game in over a month and having to overcome injury problems. Those were just some of the challenges the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team overcame in a Thursday night nonconference win over the University of Great Falls. Northern got a huge lift from junior guard Laramie Schwenke and sophomore Jordan Bruursema after losing senior guard Taylor Keller to an injury in the first half as the Skylights turned away the hot-shooting Argos 86-70 Thursday at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse....

  • Skylights finally home

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a long time since the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team has played a game in the friendly confines of the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. Tonight, the Skylights will get to remedy that when they take on Frontier Conference rival, the University of Great Falls in a nonconference showdown at 7. The last time MSU-N (4-6) played a home game was Nov. 6 against Minot State, and in that span Northern was able to win just once on the road. And while beating the Argos (2-6) will be no easy task tonight,...

  • George Ferguson Column: Reflecting on an interesting fall

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The fall sports season on the Hi-Line began just the way it ended. With football fireworks. It's hard to fathom that the Chinook Sugarbeeters put an emphatic stamp on the fall sports season on a snowy and bitterly cold November day when the season began in almost the same manner. Well it began, minus the ridiculously bad weather. The year began with plenty of football optimism when summer was still in the air. On the same Saturday back in August, the Havre Blue Ponies and Montana State University-Northern Lights romped to sea...

The Glasgow Tournament featured three-time defending Class B-C state champion and host Glasgow, as well as Class A power Lewistown. But that didn't stop the Chinook Sugarbeeters and Harlem Wildcats from having plenty of success on the mat. No team scores were reported from Saturday's meet, but the Beeters had three individual champions,...

  • Havre High's Roe, Harlem's Lamebull honored for football

George Ferguson havre Daily News sports editor

A pair of Hi-Line prep football products have earned the highest honor a player can achieve for the 2010 football season. Havre High sophomore offensive lineman Danny Roe was selected to the Class A All-State Team for offense. Roe started all nine games on the offensive line for the Blue Ponies this season as a guard and had a standout year for an HHS team which had one of the top offenses in the Central A Conference. Roe also started on defense for the Blue Ponies this season and was also HHS's kicker. The Harlem Wildcats...

  • Mariani sharp in Titans loss

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Thanks to a nearly flawless performance by the Indianapolis offense, Thursday's night's NFL Network showdown between the Colts and Tennessee Titans saw Havre's Marc Mariani get plenty of chances to show his return skills. The Titans dropped their sixth game in a row, 30-28 to the Colts, despite a valiant second-half comeback by Tennessee Thursday night in Nashville. And while the loss was certainly disappointing to Mariani and to the Titans, he again showed why he's one of the most dangerous return men in the NFL. Mariani...

  • A coaching legend with a new gig

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The high school basketball season is brand new on the Hi-Line. And while stalking the sidelines is nothing new to legendary head coach Charlie Robinson, the man who is only one of seven coaches in Montana boys basketball history to earn over 500 wins, he is in a brand new place. This past year, Robinson, who enters his 38th season coaching high school basketball went from coaching the North Star boys to the Chinook girls. And while Robinson has 559 wins in boys basketball to his credit, coaching girls hoops is nothing new to...

  • Quiet day for Mariani, Titans

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Tennessee Titans are on a slide, despite the contributions from former Havre High star Marc Mariani. On Sunday, the Titans lost their fifth straight game, falling 17-6 to the Jackson Jaguars in Nashville. Because of the low-scoring affair, Mariani was rendered fairly quite returning kicks. He returned two kickoffs for 36 yards, and one punt for just four yards. He also had four fair catches and two touchbacks. Mariani came into the day leading the AFC in punt returns and was third in the NFL in kickoff returns. Mariani...

  • Skylights split with NAIA powers

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team knew it had its work cut out heading into two games at the Westminster Tournament in Salt Lake City. And not having won since the beginning of November, and without their leading scorer on Saturday afternoon, the Skylights responded. On day after losing to GSAC power the Master's College, where point guard Taylor Keller suffered an injury that kept her out of Saturday's game, the Skylights rose up and found a way to get back in the win column, beating William...

  • Lights sweep in Canada

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Nearly three weeks had gone by since the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team had played in a game. So Northern head coach Shawn Huse expected some rust from his No. 25 Lights as they traveled to Camrose, Alberta for a two-game series with Augustana College. And while the Lights did feel some effects from the layoff, it didn't show in the win-loss column as MSU-N pummeled Augustana in both games. "Our kids played very well after the layoff," Huse said. "I was very pleased with the effort we got from...

  • MSU-N matmen struggle at Battle of the Rockies

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It wasn't the kind of home away from home performance the Montana State-University Northern wrestling team was looking for. Instead, the No. 10 Lights went to Great Falls for two days of Battle of the Rockies competition and nearly came home with little to show for it. The Lights lots duals to No. 2 McKendree College and No. 14 Embry-Riddle University on Friday afternoon, then didn't wrestle up to expectations during the Battle of the Rockies open tournament on Saturday. "We had some individual performances that went well,...
