George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Speedster Silva gashes RMC's defense George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor Numbers tell the tale. And while the Montana State University-Northern football team was frustrated after its third straight loss of the season, a 34-23 setback at the hands of Rocky Mountain College Saturday in Havre, there are young Lights who are certainly proving to be stars in the making. One of those is sophomore Stephen Silva, who rushed for a career-high 135 yards on 22 carries against the Bears. It was the third straight week in...

  • Tough trip: Lights head to EOU

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The Montana State University-Northern football team is young. The Lights have few seniors on a talented roster for 2010. And now the Lights' resiliency is about to be tested. On Saturday afternoon in LaGrande, Ore., the Lights (1-1, 1-1) will try to bounce back from a heartbreaking 17-13 loss to Montana Tech when they take on winless Eastern Oregon University (0-2, 0-3). And not only is MSU-N looking to rebound from its first loss of the season, but the Lights are hoping to win in Community Stadium for the first time since...

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

With preseason tournaments behind them, area high school volleyball teams are turning the attention to conference play. On Thursday night, the District 6C East started off with a big match between Box Elder and Big Sandy. The Pioneers won by scores of 25-11, 25-8 and 25-23 on their home floor, and they got four kills and two digs from MacKenzie Jenkins to lead the way. The Bears were led by Rebecca Rosette with two kills and two aces. In a nonconference match Thursday night, the North Star Knights beat the Sunburst Refiner...

  • HHS golfers get back on the course

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The Havre High boys and girls golf teams finally beat the weather. After missing last weekend's Browning Invitational, and a rainy week of practice, the Ponies were back on the course on Saturday in Lewistown. Havre saw good competition at the Lewistown Invitational held at the Judith Shadows Golf Club. On the girls side, the Blue Ponies got a first-ever Top 10 from freshman Katie Beck, who shot a solid 107. In just her third tournament of her career, Beck finished in seventh place overall, but was just five strokes out of fi...

  • Frontier spikers ready to turn the page

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The halfway point of the Frontier Conference volleyball season has come and gone. And with a week of rest, the league will resume play this weekend, and in the process, start the push towards the Frontier tournament and postseason glory. The first half of the season was full of fulfilled expectations and some big surprises. The latter was perhaps the best story of the first two weeks of the season – the start by the Montana State University-Northern Skylights. The Skylights had a total of nine wins between 2008 and the s...

  • Now it counts: Mariani ready for NFL debut

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The "Turk" didn't come for former Havre Blue Pony Marc Mariani last Saturday. That's what NFL players call whoever is in charge of bring players to the coaches' office on final cut day of training camp. Instead, Mariani got through cut day and has been preparing all week to open his first NFL season when the Tennessee Titans take on the Oakland Raiders Sunday in Nashville. Mariani was stellar in the preseason, leading the NFL in all-purpose yards, as well as leading the Titans in yards-per-catch, punt and kickoff yardage and...

  • Welcome home MSU-N

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The 2010 Frontier Conference football season couldn't have started any better for the Montana State University-Northern Lights. A dominating conference road win was exactly what the Lights were hoping for on the dawn of a brand new season. But that 20-3 win at UM-Western already seems like a long time ago. And with the first of two bye weeks behind them, the Lights turn their attention to pushing forward when they host Montana Tech in their home opener Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. "I think we got some things o...

  • Skylights take on the Frontier

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor, [email protected]

The Montana State University-Northern volleyball team is off to its best start in five years. But things will change drastically for the Skylights tonight. Northern completed its nonconference schedule with an outstanding 7-3 record, matching its win total from all of last season in the process. But tonight in Butte, the Skylights start Frontier Conference play against Montana Tech, and despite how well they've done in the preseason, MSU-N head coach Bill Huebsch knows the Skylights are headed for new challenges. "We've...

  • Early shake ups in the Frontier

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor, [email protected]

The Frontier Conference football season is only two weeks old, and already there are major things changing the landscape of the league. The biggest shake up may have come last weekend when No. 3 Carroll College barely extended its 34-game conference winning streak by slipping past Rocky Mountain College 24-21 in Helena. Now it may not be a surprise that the much-improved Battlin' Bears gave the vaunted Saints all they could handle on Saturday, or that Carroll needed a Thomas Dolan interception of RMC's Mark Desin late in the...

  • MSU-N rodeo teams put fall in the books

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The rodeo season is done for the Montana State University-Northern rodeo teams, at least for a few months. The Lights and Skylights were on the road the last two weeks, traveling to rodeos in Miles City Sept. 23-25 and Dillon last weekend. Now the Lights and Skylights will take the winter off until the Big Sky Region spring circuit begins again in April. In Miles City, the Skylights finished in sixth place overall, while the Lights finished seventh. On the women's side, Havre's Kassy Brough had a great rodeo finishing third...

  • Few surprises at the halfway point

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

After five weeks of Frontier Conference football, the Carroll College Fighting Saints are undefeated. That's not a shocker. As the league reaches its bye week and the halfway point in the season, things have gone almost according to plan. At least in some ways. The No. 2 Saints (5-0) are right where they should be and their best football might still be in front of them. Carroll was pushed in early games by Rocky Mountain College, and even UM-Western held the Saints' offense down. But against Frontier stalwarts like Montana...

  • Pony golfers get tremendous experience at state

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Sometimes in sports, the biggest challenges are the best learning experiences. And that's what five Havre High golfers got this weekend at the Class A state golf tournament in Laurel. The Blue Ponies who qualified for the 36-hole state finale Friday and Saturday at the private Laurel Golf Club may have not turned in the scores they were hoping for, but they played their best and when it was all said and done, they came away with an invaluable experience. "Overall, I'm really happy with how this season went," Havre first-year...

  • Saints march by Northern

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

On a beautiful homecoming day at Blue Pony Stadium, things quickly turned disastrous for the Montana State University-Northern football team. In what turned out to be Northern's most lopsided defeat in over seven years, the second-ranked Carroll College Saints used two MSU-N turnovers in the first three minutes to catapult themselves to 58 unanswered points and a dominating 65-13 win over the Lights Saturday afternoon in Havre. MSU-N fumbled the opening kickoff and Carroll was on the board at the 12:58 mark when John Camino...

  • George Ferguson column: Highs or lows, Mariani shows poise

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani's 98-yard kickoff return Sunday afternoon against the Denver Broncos was a thing of beauty. And I'm sure every person in Havre, Missoula and all points beyond who were watching rose to their feet in front of their TV's as a he streaked down the sidelines on his way to pay dirt for the first time in the NFL. For someone who has seen and covered so many of Mariani's great moments throughout the years, Sunday's epic kick return will be something I won't soon forget. The celebration, the sound of the crowd as he near...

  • History: Mariani Scores

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Following Sunday's NFL football game against the Denver Broncos at LP Field in Nashville, Tennessee Titans' receiver and former Havre Blue Pony star Marc Mariani talked about the highs and lows in the game of football. And just minutes into the third quarter of Denver's 26-20 win, Mariani experienced the ultimate high for any NFL player, let alone a rookie seventh-round pick from the University of Montana. After Denver kicked a field goal to open the second half, Mariani took the ensuing kickoff and raced through open space,...

  • Skylights travel to RMC, Carroll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a difficult and emotional few weeks for the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team. First, the Skylights were riding high by getting off to their best start in the last six seasons. But the journey has hit a bump in the road, as Northern has lost three straight Frontier Conference matches, including last week's home-opening losses to nationally-ranked Lewis-Clark State and Westminster College. And things won't get any easier for Northern (2-3, 9-6) as the Skylights travel to Rocky Mountain College tonight...

  • Lights look to halt Saints' march

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Playing the NAIA powerhouse that is Carroll College is never easy. There's a reason the Saints have won 36 straight Frontier Conference games. But playing the Saints while injuries are piling up and three straight losses are in the rear view mirror is an even bigger chore. But that's what the Montana State University-Northern Lights are facing when they host No. 2 Carroll for MSU-N's homecoming game Saturday at 1 p.m. inside Blue Pony Stadium. Northern (1-3) was the last Frontier Conference team to beat the Saints (4-0). The...

  • Frontier Conference football preview

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor, [email protected]

For two teams, the Frontier Conference football season is already a week old. For the rest, the race for the Frontier championship and a berth in the 2010 NAIA playoffs starts Saturday. The Frontier is off to an interesting start with the Montana State University-Northern Lights beating the UM-Western Bulldogs 20-3 last Saturday in Dillon. If prognostications are important to anyone, the Lights were picked to finish last in the league this season, while the Bulldogs garnered a fourth-place pick from the league's coaches. But...
