  • Local cowboys head to MPRCF this weekend

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

There is always a strong rodeo tradition on the Hi-Line. But this weekend, plenty of Hi-Line cowboys will make their presence felt even stronger as they compete in the annual Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals. The 32nd annual Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals hits the Four Seasons Arena starting tonight. The three-performance rodeo, which includes 7 p.m. performances tonight and Saturday and a 2 p.m. matinee on Sunday, features large purses and huge crowds. And Havre and the Hi-Line will be there. The top 12 money-winners from...

  • The very first Super 15

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

For years, a faction of people have suggested having an all-class state high school basketball tournament. There's also been years in which state champions from all of the classifications have played non-sanctioned games after the season ends in order to determine the best of the best in Montana. Simply put, in basketball, there's times when classification doesn't mean as much. So in honor of that theory, the Havre Daily News sports staff has decided to put together its own Super 15 boys and girls basketball polls each week....

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Nineteen Montana State University-Northern football players were honored this week for their outstanding work in both football and academics as the 2010-11 Frontier All-Conference Academic Team was announced. Seven seniors paced the list of the Lights on the team, including K.C. Barrett, Hilbert Corbert, Ryan Halko, Kyle Kercher, Jeff Mahana, Travis Hjort and Casey Varner. The rest of the Northern players honored were sophomores, including Matt Bean, Alex Cummings, Nick Griffin, Todd Henrich, Orin Johnson, Tim Jovanovich,...

  • Blue Pony swimmers compte with Class A's best

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

In the long-awaited return from the holiday break, the Havre High boys and girls swim teams were anxious to get back in the water. Although the Blue Ponies had to train for a few days without the use of their own pool, HHS still looked sharp this weekend at the annual Class A Meet in Hardin. The meet is a three-team extravaganza showcasing the only schools which compete in swimming in Class A — Havre, Hardin and Billings Central. Back in the pool, the Blue Pony swimmers had a strong outing in Hardin. On the girls side, the P...

  • Hi-Line girls basketball roundup

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The first full weekend of 2011 girls basketball on the Hi-Line is in the books. And coming out of the holiday break, teams were ready to play. Friday night saw the Big Sandy Pioneers earn an important District 9C win on the road, beating the Chinook Sugarbeeters 52-48. In a close game, the Beeters played a stellar first half and led 26-21 at the half, and 37-32 at the end of three quarters. But the Pioneers ripped off a 20-10 run in the final eight minutes to take the win. Mariah Gullickson led three Pioneers in double...

  • Pony wrestlers back in action

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High wrestling team will begin defense of its Cut Bank Invitational team title Friday morning in Cut Bank. The Blue Ponies came back after winter break for a practice and match-up session with wrestlers from Chinook, Chester/J-I, Glasgow and Big Sandy on Monday afternoon at the Mat Corner. Now, HHS head coach Scott Filius' team will get back on the mat for real with two days of action in Cut Bank. HHS comes into this weekend ranked No. 2 in Class A behind Belgrade, and the Ponies have a pair of top-ranked Class A...

  • 2011 Frontier Women's Basketball Preview

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

There's never been a shortage of good women's basketball teams in the Frontier Conference. After all, many consider the league to rival the Golden State Athletic Conference as the best in NAIA Division I. And that balance of power isn't likely to change in the near future. Coming into the first week of the 2011 Frontier season, the league has three ranked teams in LC State, Westminster and Carroll College, while programs at Montana Tech, MSU-Northern and Rocky have also put together strong nonconference runs this season. And...

  • 2011 Frontier Men's Basketball Preview

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Men's basketball in the Frontier Conference has become as powerful as anywhere else in the country. In just the last two seasons, the Frontier has made five NAIA tournament appearances with four different teams, and it was less than two years ago that the Frontier produced a national champion when Rocky Mountain College captured the 2009 NAIA title. And while the faces and names on the back of the jersey's change around the league, the high level of basketball doesn't. Two-time Frontier champion Westminster starts the year...

  • Skylights, Lights well prepared

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

When it comes to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams have similar approaches in preparing for league play. And with their Frontier openers at UGF just two days away, the Lights and Skylights are hoping their philosophy has paid off. Both Northern teams have spent the last two months taking on a rigorous nonconference schedule, mostly built around difficult road and neutral sight games. The hope is, that after the schedule both teams played in November and...

  • Mariani sets Titans all-time record

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Sunday wasn't the ending to the NFL's regular season the Tennessee Titans were hoping for. But a 23-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts didn't top Titans rookie and former Havre Blue Pony Marc Mariani from making a little more history. Mariani ripped off a 47-yard kickoff return on his second return of the day, and in the process of that return broke Derrick Mason's franchise record, set in 2000, of 1,794 combined punt and kickoff return yards in a single season. It was the second return record Mariani set in as many weeks. At...

  • Highway 2 sweep in Malta

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High boys and girls basketball teams weren't slated to return from the holiday break until Friday. But a season-opening snow storm back on Dec. 10 meant the Ponies would have a game earlier in 2011 than originally planned. And Havre's return to the hardwood didn't go the way either Blue Pony team was hoping Monday night in Malta. The Havre High girls fell to the defending Class B state champion Malta M-Ettes Monday night, 62-48, while the Pony boys suffered a heartbreaking 51-47 loss to the Mustangs. The boys game...

  • Wagner to play in all-star game

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Former Havre High star and Carroll College quarterback Gary Wagner's football season isn't over just yet. On Saturday, Wagner will play in the Dixie Gridiron championship in St. George, Utah. Wagner is already in St. George working out with his team in preparation for Saturday's game. Wagner went straight to St. George from Honolulu, Hawaii where he was last week for the Pro Bowl. The Frontier Conference Player of the Year, and a finalist for NAIA Player of the Year, Wagner was one of just five quarterbacks selected to play...

  • Hi-Line Girls Basketball Roundup

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

With the month of January winding down, the race is on in girls high school basketball on the Hi-Line. With the postseason looming, every game becomes critical and this past weekend was no exception. The week got off to a rough start for a pair of Hi-Line teams as Class B Rocky Boy and Class C Big Sandy both dropped Thursday night nonconference games. In Malta, the Morning Stars fell to District @B powerhouse Malta, 57-27. The M-Ettes raced out to a 21-5 lead and never let Rocky Boy back in the game. Tennae Singer and Falene...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Recruiting season in football is in high gear, and the Montana State University-Northern Lights have added six new transfers to their roster for the 2011 season. The Lights and head coach Mark Samson announced the signing of six transfers as the first portion of their 2011 recruiting class. Samson is expected to announce his high school commits later this week. Headlining the list of transfers, who are enrolled at Northern and will compete this spring, is Montana State transfer Jared Rohrback of Great Falls. Rohrback was a...

  • Magical Mariani ride culiminates in Hawaii

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Even if Marc Mariani hadn't obliterated Pro Bowl return records on Sunday, even if he hadn't had the chance to field an astounding nine kickoffs, the former Havre High and University of Montana football star would have still been in heaven as he departed Honolulu for the colds of the mainland on Monday night. That's because Mariani just wrapped up a week's worth of experiences even some of the best football players on the planet might not ever get. But the fact is, not only was Mariani's trip to Hawaii one of the highlights...

  • Four Blue Ponies, 36 tough holes

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The leaves are changing colors, even falling to the ground, and soon golf season will give way until next spring. But for four Havre High golfers, this weekend in Laurel marks two more days in the sun, two more days in which the clubs come out of the bag and balls fall in the hole. Friday and Saturday, Havre High golfers Simon McCann, Rebekah Martin, Katie Beck and Samantha French will take part in the Class A state golf tournament at the Laurel Golf Club. The tournament is a 36-hole event, with team and individual state...

  • One last dance at Blue Pony Stadium

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

There are plenty of reasons why the Carroll College/MSU-Northern football rivalry is so special. After all, MSU-N head coach Mark Samson and longtime wide receivers coach Scott Leeds have strong ties to the Saints' program. On the flip side, Carroll has had success with former Blue Ponies like Leeds and current Saints' defensive backs coach Jarrod Wirt, who was an all-conference defensive back for Carroll during two of their national title runs. Then, there is the fact that Northern is the only Frontier Conference program to...

  • Class A state wrestling moved to Butte

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

For the first time in over two decades, the three classifications of high school wrestling in Montana won't compete for state championships together. In fact, all three classes will do it in separate venues come February. On Tuesday, the Montana High School Association announced the three separate sites for the 2010 Montana State Wrestling Championships. The tournament, which has been held as an all-class event for over 20 years in Billings, has been in a state of flux since a devastating tornado destroyed the Billings Metra...

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It was an interesting weekend of volleyball on the Hi-Line, especially in the District 6C East. The weekend got underway on Thursday with a pair of nonconference matches on the Hi-Line. North Star downed 6C West rival Dutton-Brady by scores of 22-25, 25-15, 25-17 and 25-20. The win was the start of a weekend in which the Knights saw matches against Hays-Lodge Pole cancelled on Friday night. Thursday night was also the continuation of a tough week for the Chinook Sugarbeeters. The Beeters lost to District 2B power Malta on...

  • HHS golf hosts Havre Invitational

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

In high school golf, being able to play on your home course is a huge advantage. But in Havre, it's even more so. Not only are Havre High golfers more familiar with home layouts like Beaver Creek golf Course and Prairie Farms, but the Blue Pony players are much more accustomed to playing in Havre's blustery golf conditions. And that's what the Ponies will try to take advantage of when they host the 2010 Havre Invitational golf tournament Saturday at BCGC. The Havre Invite will be an 18-hole tournament and will feature teams...

  • Skylights travel to UGF

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor [email protected]

The 2010 NAIA volleyball season is already a month old and the Montana State University-Northern Skylights still haven't played a match on their home floor yet. But that hasn't seemed to bother the Skylights who are off to their best start in six years. And before MSU-N can make its home debut next weekend against Lewis-Clark State and Westminster College, the Skylights have one more road match to take care of. Tonight at 7, the Skylights will be in Great Falls to take on arch rival, the University of Great Falls and head...

  • Frontier Conference Notebook

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

In what seemed like the blink of an eye Saturday, the Eastern Oregon Mountaineers NAIA playoff hopes were gone. Leading Carroll College 12-0 in the first quarter, the Saints ripped off 49 unanswered points to leave LaGrande, Ore., with a 49-12 win, and in their wake, left the Mounties at 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in Frontier Conference play. Hopes were high for EOU this season after going 7-4 a year ago. The Mounties started the year ranked No. 20 in the country and returned an all-american quarterback in junior Chris Ware....

  • Hi-Line Volleyball Roundup

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

With each passing week, the volleyball season becomes a little more heated. And this past weekend saw area volleyball teams take some important steps in preparing for the stretch run. This weekend's matches included the District 6C East Hays-Lodge Pole Thunderbirds playing two doubleheaders in four days. On Tuesday, the T-Birds dropped a pair of matches to Chester/J-I. The Hawks won the first match by scores of 25-4, 25-10 and 25-5, while they bested the T-Birds by scores of 25-9, 25-19 and 25-13 in a much more competitive...

  • Skylights fall at RMC, Carroll

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern volleyball team has spent almost its entire season on the road. And before the Skylights could begin a stretch of six of their next eight matches at home, they had to battle with two more tough Frontier Conference opponents on the road. On Friday night, the Skylights were swept at Rocky Mountain College by scores of 25-21, 25-12 and 25-16 in Billings. And Saturday night in Helena, the Carroll College Fighting Saints took care of MSU-N in a tightly-contested four-set match. Carroll...

  • MSU-N Game Day Notebook

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Carroll College senior quarterback Gary Wagner has thrown a lot of passes to a lot of different people on the turf at Blue Pony Stadium over the years. The list includes former Northern Lights like Coda Tchida, current Tennessee Titans like Marc Mariani, former college baseball players like Daine Solomon and a host of great and talented Carroll wide receivers. But on Saturday afternoon, Wagner got to make one last day at his old stadium that much more special when he completed a pass to his younger brother Billy Wagner in Car...
