  • Class AA teams top second HDN Super 15

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The fun thing about basketball polls is to see what happens when teams are ranked. It's also fun to see where teams go after a big win, or after tough losses. And one thing's for certain, no matter where squads are ranked, in basketball, everything gets settled on the floor. It's week two of the Havre Daily News boys and girls Super 15 Polls, and the top teams haven't changed. Bozeman sits atop the boys poll for a second straight week, while Billings West tops the girls poll. New to the boys poll this week is Class AA...

  • Local ropers succeed in Great Falls

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

For several Hi-Line cowboys, this weekend's Montana Pro Rodeo Circuit Finals in Great Falls was a rough one. For others, it was a lucrative three days. The MPRCF was held Friday through Sunday at the Four Seasons Arena in Great Falls, and a pair of area team ropes came away with the most success. Zortman's Shane Schwenke and teammate Kory Mytty finished third in the average for the weekend, as well as the year-end championship and a trip to the Dodge Circuit Finals this spring in Oklahoma City. Schwenke and Mytty garnered...

  • Havre High girls stay close with Bison

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

In a rare Monday night game, the Havre High girls basketball team did all it could to hang with the Class AA Great Falls High Bison. In the end however, the Bison had just enough firepower to hold off the Blue Ponies. On Monday night at the Swarthout Fieldhouse in Great Falls, the Ponies fell to GFH 48-40. But the eight-point margin didn't speak to how well the Ponies played. The two teams played a seesaw first half in which the lead changed hands several times with neither team leading by more than three points. GFH seized...

  • MSU-N matmen succeed in Oregon

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team didn't accomplish everything it set out to do in Clackamas, Ore., but the Lights came pretty close. Northern was in Clackamas for two days of wrestling, including a close 22-20 dual loss to the Clackamas Cougars in a Friday night dual. Clackamas is the top-ranked NJCAA team in the country, and the Lights were open at 125 pounds, or the dual might have come out differently. But as tough a loss as it was on Friday night, MSU-N bounced back in a big way during Saturday's...

  • Lights secure all-important split at Montana Tech, Western

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

After the dust settled on this weekend's Frontier Conference men's basketball games, one thing has become quite clear – the league is wide open. And that's precisely why this weekend's road split was very big for the Montana State University-Northern Lights. Northern captured a hard-fought 67-61 win at Montana Tech on Friday night, before dropping its first league game of the season, a 69-64 loss at UM-Western on Saturday night. The split left MSU-N at 2-1 in conference play, but just a half game behind Lewis-Clark State f...

  • Northern grapplers hit the mat in Oregon

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern wrestling team had a rough trip to the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals last weekend in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Now, with their final home dual of the season just a week away, the Lights will look to build some momentum in Oregon. Tonight, the Lights get two days of wrestling started with a dual against Clackamas Community College in Clackamas, Ore. Northern will also compete in the Clackamas Open on Saturday. Tonight's dual will be a homecoming of sorts for a pair of Northern's top wrestlers....

  • HHS swims back in Great Falls

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

When the Havre High boys and girls swim teams jump into the pool at the Swarthout Fieldhouse Saturday in Great Falls, the Blue Ponies will certainly know their opponent. On Saturday at 12 p.m., the Ponies are back in Great Falls, where they'll compete against the Great Falls High Bison and CMR Rustlers for a third time this season. HHS already hosted both teams in a double-dual in Havre last month, then the following week, competed against the squads in a pair of meets in Great Falls. Now, the Ponies will do so again, and...

  • Bison nip Blue Pony grapplers

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It's been a while, but the Great Falls High Bison finally found a way to upsend the Havre Blue Pony wrestling team. The Ponies lost their annual dual with the Bison 42-36 Thursday in Great Falls. Havre got a huge edge right away as Eli Hinebauch, who just went down to 145 pounds, defeated GFH's top-ranked Class AA 145-pounder Dylan Mendenhall by pin at 5:12. And HHS kept rolling early with wins by Grant Pattison and Kameron Pribyl, as well as Jared Ruttokfsky. Duell Stadel and Dillon Seely also grabbed victories for the Blue...

  • Skylights aiming to get on track

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking defeat at the University of Great Falls last Friday night. And even before that loss, the Skylights were dealing with a host of injury problems, none of which have been resolved. So to say this weekend's road trip to Montana Tech and UM-Western is daunting would be an understatement. The Skylights (9-8, 0-1) visit Tech tonight in Butte, then play at Western Saturday night in Dillon. "It's a very tough trip for us," MSU-N head coach Chris Mo...

  • MSU-N men seek more road wins

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Winning on the road is never easy in the Frontier Conference. However, it's also the key to successfully chasing down the Frontier crown, and while the Montana State University-Northern Lights already have a key road win under their belt, the mission is far from complete. Tonight, the Lights (12-4, 1-0) take step two in the process when they visit Montana Tech in Butte. Northern wraps up a weekend swing at UM-Western on Saturday. The Lights got off to a strong start in conference play with a hard-fought win over a...

  • UGF stymies MSU-N women

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

GREAT FALLS — Just three weeks ago, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team thumped the UGF Argos by 16 points in a nonconference game in Havre. However, it didn't take long for the Argos to return the favor. On Friday night at the McLaughlin Center in Great Falls, the Argos pounced on the short-handed Skylights, who were without senior Taylor Keller and reserve forward Stren Tramelli, 85-73, handing MSU-N a difficult Frontier Conference opening loss. And while Northern looked so solid against the A...

  • One rival down: Lights take out Argos

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

GREAT FALLS — The Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team always gets up for playing the Great Falls Argos, and vice versa. Add to the fact that it's always a homecoming game for Northern junior Shaun Tatarka, the Frontier Conference showdown makes for a special treat. And on Friday night in Great Falls, Tatarka and the Lights didn't disappoint, kicking off the 2011 Frontier Conference season with a 75-67 win over the Argos at the McLaughlin Center, sparked by Tatarka's game-high 26 points. The Lights s...

  • Mariani gives us all an unforgettable day

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani is on his way to the first Pro Bowl in his young, but exciting NFL career. However, a stop-over in his home town became what will likely be the biggest event of 2011, even with most of the year still to come. Mariani was at the Havre Holiday Village Mall Sunday to sign autographs and meet fans, and what was originally billed as a three-hour session, turned into a scene unlike any I've seen in all my years covering, being a part of, or just being around the Havre sports landscape. Fans lined the mall early Sunday...

  • HDN Athlete Profile: Laramie Schwenke

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Montana State University-Northern junior Laramie Schwenke has been to the mountain top of high school basketball, having won a Class B state championship with the powerful Malta M-Ettes in a 2007 undefeated season. But Schwenke has also endured the lows of the game of basketball, having had to miss most of her first two seasons with the Skylights because of injuries. And that's why what Schwenke is doing this season is so remarkable. In her third year at Northern, the former Malta great is having one of the most wee-rounded...

  • DSU, SOU part of a new-look Frontier

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Years of speculation, years of discussion and a lot of planning in recent months, and now Frontier Conference officials, presidents and athletic directors will see the fruits of their labor. League officials wrapped up two days of meetings on Tuesday by announcing that Dickinson State University and Southern Oregon University will become the newest members of the Frontier, starting in the 2012-13 school year DSU, located in Dickinson, N.D., has an enrollment of 2,767 and will join the league as a full member. For years, DSU...

Saturday and Sunday, the Lights will hit the mat at the NWCA Cliff Keen National Duals in Cedar Falls, Iowa, the sight of the 2011 NAIA National Championships. • HHS swim teams back in the pool

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High swim teams haven't been able to get much work done in its own pool this week, but never-the-less, the Blue Ponies will get back to competing today. The Ponies are on the road to compete in the Class A Meet in Hardin this weekend, Havre's first meet since before the winter break. The Class A Meet features the three schools which compete in boys and girls swimming in Havre High, Billings Central and Hardin. The Pony boys and the Billings Central girls are the defending Class A state champions. The meet is always...

  • Schermele says farewell to Great Falls

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If it seems like Montana State University-Northern guard Samm Schermele has been playing basketball on the Hi-Line forever, it just seems that way. Schermele was playing in Havre by her sophomore year of high school as a star guard/forward for the Great Falls High Bison, and is now in her fourth year as a starter for the Skylights. And tonight's game at UGF will certainly be an emotional one for the two-time Class AA All-State standout, who is now sixth on MSU-N's all-time scoring list. When the Skylights open league play at...

  • Skylights open league play with Argos

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The long-awaited Frontier Conference women's basketball season is finally here. And there's noting like a little rivalry game to kick things off. Tonight in Great Falls, the MSU-Northern Skylights will open league play with a visit to rival UGF. And in an unusual scheduling year, the two teams already know each other well. Last month in Havre, the Skylights blew out the Argos in a nonconference game. And while UGF comes into tonight's game with just five wins on the season, Northern head coach Chris Mouat is expecting...

  • MSU-N men head to rival Great Falls

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

If the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team was looking for a challenging start to Frontier Conference play, the Lights are going to get it tonight in Great Falls. Northern (11-4) and rival Great Falls (7-8) open league play tonight at 8 at the McLaughlin Center, and while the Lights come to the Electric City red-hot, the Argos are playing some of their best basketball in years, and that makes tonight's rivalry game very intriguing. "This may be the best Great Falls team we've seen," MSU-N head coach Shawn...

  • Big changes in the Super 15

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

There's no question, from top to bottom, and as far as depth and sheer numbers go, Class AA basketball reigns supreme in Montana. But that isn't to say programs from other classifications in Montana can't compete at the same level. And this winter is proving that it isn't just the AA's that have the cream of the crop when it comes to boys and girls basketball in the Treasure State. In the fourth Havre Daily News Super 15 polls, the Columbia Falls Wildcats, a dominant Class A boys power have climbed to the top of the poll....

  • Ponies will get pushed Saturday

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

There's no question the Havre Blue Ponies have had a stranglehold on the Central A Division when it comes to wrestling. And with the Ponies set to host the 2011 Central A Tournament on Saturday at the HHS gymnasium — it would seem like a sure thing it's going to stay that way. But the Central A has become a much deeper and more talented division as a whole in the last few years, and this Saturday's meet should reflect that well. The Ponies barely edged Belgrade for the divisional title a year ago, and it's the Panthers, n...

  • MSU-N inks Lewistown spiker

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Montana State University-Northern volleyball coach Bill Huebsch is starting his recruiting class for 2011. Huebsch recently announced the signing of Lewistown's Dayna Jensen, a 5-8 outside hitter. Jensen was a three-year varsity player for Coach Tara Taylor's Eagles, winning State Class "A" titles in 2008 and 2010. During the 2010 season, she was named 1st Team All-Conference and 1st Team All-State, received the CO-MVP award at the State All-Class Volleyball Tournament in Bozeman and was named to the Great Falls Tribune...

  • Ice Hawks crush Miles City

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre Ice Hawks have had a rough season in some ways. Cancellations and tough losses, bad weather and missed games. But this past weekend at the Havre Ice Dome, the Ice Hawks had plenty to smiles about as they swept Miles City in a pair of high school hockey games. On Saturday night, the Ice Hawks crushed Miles City 11-0 and put up an even bigger 14-0 score on Sunday morning. A big factor in Havre's wins was the Ice Hawks defense and goalie Joey DeVries, who pitched a pair of shutouts between the pipes. On Saturday,...

  • Halfway home: Frontier standings a mess

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The halfway point in the Frontier Conference basketball seasons is here. And what's become quite clear on both the men's and women's side is, the leagues are very deep this season. On the men's side, league-favorite Westminster stumbled out of the gate, losing two of its first three games. Yet the Griffins still sit atop the league standings at 5-2. But what's behind Westminster is a big mess, a four-way tie for second place with MSU-Northern, UM-Western, Lewis-Clark State and Carroll College all sitting at 4-3. And with...
