  • Blue Pony swimmers succeed in Helena

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

With the regular season winding down, high school swimmers are starting to gear up for the final races of the season. For the Havre Blue Ponies, those races come in two weeks at the all-class state meet in Butte. But before the Ponies get to Butte, they had one last meet in which to prepare. And in many ways, they took full advantage. The Pony boys and girls were at the Carroll College pool Saturday for the prestigious Helena Invitational, and while they faced off against some of the best individual swimmers in Montana, they...

  • Westminster women take care of MSU-N

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Two blowout wins at home one week, two tough road losses the next. That's life in the Frontier Conference and that's been the life of the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team the last two weeks. The Skylights were red-hot coming into this week's trip to nationally-ranked Frontier powers LC State and Westminster. But after the week began with a tough loss at LC State, it ended on a difficult note for the Skylights. On Saturday night in Salt Lake City, Northern fell to 11th-ranked Westminster College,...

  • Griffins pull away from Lights

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

What a difference a week can make in the Frontier Conference. Heading into Thursday night's game at Lewis-Clark State, the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team was riding high, ranked No. 19 in the NAIA, sitting in first place in the league standings, and coming off a sweep of league powers Carroll College and RMC at home. But Northern lost by nine points at LC State on Thursday and things didn't get any better two days later in Salt Lake City. On Saturday night, the Lights fell to the No. 23 Westminster...

  • Rustlers prove too big for Blue Ponies

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

For 32 minutes of basketball this season, the Havre High boys have given the Class AA CMR Rustlers all they wanted. Unfortunately for the Blue Ponies, it's the last 32 minutes that have been the difference. Just like in last month's game in Great Falls, the Blue Ponies gave the Rustlers a big scare in the first half of Saturday night's rematch at the HHS gymnasium. But just like back in December, the Rustler's size took over in the second half. CMR broke open a 16-13 halftime lead by going inside to 6-7 center Russ Morin, and...

  • Aloha: Mariani shatters Pro Bowl return records

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani said earlier this week that Pro Bowl traditions for rookies include players who make the least amount of money pick up plenty of tabs during their stay in Hawaii. So while he may be out some bucks when he leaves Honolulu, he'll still be leaving with plenty to smile about. Although the NFC pounded Mariani's AFC squad 55-41 Sunday afternoon in Hawaii, the Tennessee Titans receiver and former Blue Pony star left his own mark on the game by returning nine kickoffs for an astounding 326 yards — both new Pro Bowl r...

  • Play Ball: North Stars ready to go

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Despite low numbers roster-wise, the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball team put together a successful 2010 campaign. Now, a relatively new group of North Stars, mixed with some quality veterans and a legendary head coach will try and do the same this spring and summer. After going 31-21 a year ago, but missing out on the Class A state tournament, the North Stars are back for another season of baseball, and a familiar face will be in the dugout and on the third-baseline. • Havre Daily News All Hi-Line Boys Team

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

It was another great season of boys basketball on the Hi-Line and the annual Havre Daily News All Hi-Line Boys Team reflects just that. Individually, there were great performances all over the area this winter. This year's All Hi-Line Team features just four repeat performers and no players which have made the list more than twice. The team is also senior-laden with seven players who just wrapped up great careers leading the way, while only one underclassmen made the list. It's also a balanced list as no team has more than...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Even torrential rains and a soggy pitch can't slow the Hi-Line United soccer team down. This past Saturday, the United won a pair of U19 boys home games, sweeping Lewistown and Polson at the Havre High soccer fields. The first game was against Lewistown and the United won 2-1. • Chinook finishes fourth in B-C tennis

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Chinook Sugarbeeters came to the Class B-C state tennis tournament as the defending girls champions. Unfortunately, graduation can hamper a team's chances for a repeat. Chinook lost several key seniors off of last year's state title team, and the Beeters, while still a B-C power, just didn't have the depth to keep pace at the 2011 B-C state tournament this past weekend in Missoula. Chinook scored 16 points to finish in a tie for fourth place with Conrad and Fort Benton. Cut Bank, coached by veteran Jim Gregg earned its...

  • George Ferguson column: Armory holds so many memories, but it's certainly time for some TLC

George Ferguson. Havre Daily News sports editor

I'm only 36 years old so you'll have to forgive me if I leave out some significant moments in this trip down memory lane. But there's no doubt that if you were like me, and grew up in Havre, the Armory Gymnasium has to hold some special moments in your life. It certainly does mine. My early memories of the grand old gym mostly revolve around basketball. The old Frontier Conference, when teams would play each other on back-to-back nights, those were games everybody went to. The battles with the old UGF Argos and with Rocky...

  • HHS golfers back in action

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High School golf teams will have plenty of time on the links this week. Starting today, Blue Pony golfers will be in action in Great Falls and Lewistown. The Blue Pony boys are headed to the Class AA Great Falls Invitational which gets under way today. The tournament is a 36-hole event with one day being played at Meadowlark Country Club and the second day at Eagle Falls Golf Course. The Great Falls Invite is arguably the toughest tournament in Montana high school golf, so only the Pony boys varsity team will be in...

  • Details matter

Letter to the Editor - Rick Dow

Editor: Regarding Zach White's article, "GOP points to violations in Kaul's council race funding, " in the Sept. 15 Havre Daily News: The state of Montana candidate forms mentioned in this story were incorrectly referred to as campaign finance documents. The correct name of the document is "Form C-1-A Statement of Candidate. " Filing this document is mandatory for county and municipal candidates. The C-1-A requires the candidate's name, address and, if applicable, the name of the bank at which you intend to have the campaign...

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Montana State University-Northern redshirt-freshman Max Payne is from the deserts of Prescott, Ariz. But he's certainly getting used to the Montana winters. That's because Payne is already one of the elite wrestlers in the NAIA, in what is his first full season at MSU-N. Payne, a two-time Arizona high school state champion, redshirted last season, but is having a breakout first varsity campaign for the Lights. He's had to overcome some injury problems this season, but in the most recent NAIA rankings, Payne is ranked seventh...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily sports editor

Havre was the sight of the Northern B-C girls divisional tennis tournament. On Friday and Saturday, girls teams from Chinook, Fort Benton, Chester/J-I and Big Sandy battled it out with spots in this week's Class B-C state tennis tournament on the line. And the race for the team title was close. Chinook repeated as divisional champions, but the Hawks and Longhorns pushed the Beeters. Chinook scored 42 points to take the team title, while the Hawks were second with 36 and Fort Benton was third with 35. Chinook was led by the...

  • Annual Shrine Game features local stars

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

For many high school football players, the annual Montana East/West Shrine Game is the last chance to step onto a football field. And it's also an honor and a privilege just to be selected to the prestigious event. And while it won't be the last game for all of them, Saturday night's 64th annual Shrine Game in Laurel will be an exciting and unique experience for three Hi-Line stars. Playing on the East squad in this year's game are Chinook's Tyler Molyneaux and Josh Jones, as well as Harlem's Charles Lamebull. Molyneaux will...

  • North Stars close with a four-game homestand

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

One weekend and four games is all that stands between the Havre North Stars American Legion baseball club and the postseason. And those final four games of the regular season will be at the friendly confines of Legion Field in Havre. Today at 6 p.m., the North Stars take on the Lethbridge Miners in a Northern A doubleheader, and Havre wraps up its season in Saturday at 1 p.m. with a Northern A twin bill against the Medicine Hat Monarchs. • A Blue Pony moves to Northern's bench

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

When it comes to the basketball coaching profession, changing jobs is nothing new. After all, they don't call it the coaching carousel for nothing. And change is bringing a former Havre Blue Pony to the bench at Montana State University-Northern. MSU-N men's head basketball coach Shawn Huse recently announced that former Havre High standout and Chinook basketball coach Chris Daniel is joining the Lights' staff for the 2011-12 season. While at Northern, Daniel will finish his degree in elementary education, something he said...

  • Northern spikers roll in South Dakota

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

If the preseason is about building a team, about getting the most preparation a team can before the start of conference play, then the Montana State University-Northern volleyball team certainly accomplished that mission. This past weekend, the Skylights ended nonconference play by going 4-0 at the Dakota Wesleyn Tournament in Mitchell, S.D. And MSU-N head coach Bill Huebsch said things are right where they need to be heading into to Northern's Frontier Conference and home debut against UM-Western this Friday. "It was really...

  • Skylights, Lights well prepared

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

When it comes to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams have similar approaches in preparing for league play. And with their Frontier openers at UGF just two days away, the Lights and Skylights are hoping their philosophy has paid off. Both Northern teams have spent the last two months taking on a rigorous nonconference schedule, mostly built around difficult road and neutral sight games. The hope is, that after the schedule both teams played in November and...

  • SB 409 is a fair answer for lease fees

Letter to the Editor — Karen May

Editor: Senate Bill 409 revising state land cabin site laws has passed the Montana Senate. Senators acted on a fair and equitable solution for state lease fees, so prices won't plummet, site abandonment won't rise drastically, and beneficiaries (schools) won't see a significant loss of income. It is now in the hands of the House Natural Resources Committee. My husband and I are lease holders and hope to retire next year — at 69 and 63 respectively. If SB 409 passes, bringing the lease fees back in line with realistic v...

  • Council should seek the public's opinion on fireworks

Letter to the Editor - Darrel Lander

Editor: Regarding Havre City Council's attempt to legalize fireworks in the city limits — since we're not going to get a chance to vote on the change — I would like to challenge our council members to poll their constituents regarding this subject. I'm positive they would discover that the majority are against it for a number of reasons, including 1) noise pollution — both for the residents and their pets that are scared to death of fireworks noise; and 2) littering — we have at least one resident in the Heritage Additio...
