Year and in a year out, Frontier Conference women's basketball is arguably the premier conference in all of the NAIA. The Frontier is loaded with good teams and very good players at both the guard and post position, and the 2011 season will be no different. Already, Lewis-Clark State and Westminster are ranked in the Top 10 nationally, and Carroll College, Montana Tech and MSU-Northern look to have deep and talented teams as well. And when talking about Frontier teams, it isn't just the teams that are good. On any given...
The Havre High boys and girls basketball teams were not set to return to action until Jan. 7. But because of this notoriously rough winter on the Hi-Line, plans have changed. The Pony boys and girls teams will return from the holiday break on Monday night when they make up their postponed season-opening games in Malta. The games were to take place back on Dec. 10 but were postponed because of a winter storm which pounded the area that week, which in turn resulted in poor travel conditions. But on Monday night, the Ponies...
When the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team went to Las Vegas for the annual Las Vegas Shootout earlier this week, the Skylights had three games in which to prepare for the upcoming Frontier Conference season. So playing well in Las Vegas was at a premium. And after a hard-fought 75-62 win over Siena height College out of Michigan on Thursday night, the Skylights can come home feeling prepared for the start of conference play. "Overall, I think we played four halves of basketball this week where were ve...
Marc Mariani got a phone call on Tuesday afternoon from Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher. In the call, Fisher reminded Mariani that Sunday was the Titans final game of the 2010 NFL season. He then went on to tell Mariani that Sunday's game in Indianapolis wasn't going to be his last this season. Instead, the longtime veteran head coach of the Titans was calling to tell his rookie, seventh-round pick from the University of Montana that his last game will come Jan. 30 in Hawaii when Mariani suits up for the AFC in the an...
It would have been easy for the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team to let down following Wednesday night's big win over Black Hills State. Instead, at least for the first 30 minutes of Thursday night's finale at the AmericInn Classic inside the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse, the Lights played even better. Northern opened Thursday night's game against the University of Lethbridge with seven straight points from junior Shaun Tatarka, and the Lights never looked back, crushing the Pronghorns 77-58. "Shaun...
With Rocky Mountain College winning an NAIA national championship, and Westminster College making a great three-year run at the NAIA tournament, there's no question the Frontier Conference is loaded with talented men's basketball players. But the 2011 Frontier season will look a little different. There's plenty of talent in the league and the basketball should be as exciting as ever. But new faces dot the league this year and that will make things even more challenging than ever as 17 2009-2010 Frontier All-Conference...
Often times, sports have us so consumed, we often lose sight of what they were intended for in the first place. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who will tell you that sports were first created as a means of exercise and recreation anymore, or even more so, anyone who truly believes that. But that's precisely why they were put on this earth in the first place. And does anyone really believe anymore that sports pull people together from all walks of life? That they are unique brand of socialization which bonds people,...
Exactly 24 hours after losing a tough game to highly-touted Fresno Pacific the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball o9nce again showed its resiliency. Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas, the Skylights won their second of three games at the Las Vegas Shootout, drubbing Ursuline College 83-57. The win was Northern's eighth overall in a year when the Skylights have played a rigorous non-league schedule while enduring injuries to three key players. Northern wraps up nonconference play tonight with one last game on...
The MSU-Northern men's basketball team has had some close calls when it comes to playing ranked opponents this season. And one of those close calls was against Black Hills State. Coming into Wednesday night's 83-75 win over the seventh-ranked NAIA DII power BHSU, the Lights had a loss to the Yellowjackets, to go along with losses to now No. 1 Robert Morris and No. 9 Azusa Pacific. So there was no doubt the Lights needed a signature win against a quality opponent. And through hard work on the defensive end, a 50 percent night...
Rematches in basketball can always go either way. But in the case of the Montana State University-Northern Lights rematch with Black Hills State, things certainly went the way of the Lights. Northern suffered a heartbreaking, 3-point loss at Black Hills back in November, but on Wednesday night, the Lights exacted a measure of revenge in dramatic fashion, beating BHSU 83-75 on the first day of the AmericInn Classic at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I think the big thing is, we have really gelled even more as a team," Northern j...

Freshman Cameron Neiss (133),...
The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team knew its game with Fresno Pacific at the Las Vegas Shootout would be tough, especially without starting point guard Taylor Keller. And while Tuesday's game against Golden State Athletic power Fresno was indeed a grind, the Skylights showed at times while they'll be tough to handle when Frontier Conference play opens next week. Fresno beat the Skylights 75-61 on Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas, thanks I large part to a blistering second-half performance. But it was...
The dream just keeps getting better for former Havre High star Marc Mariani. On Tuesday afternoon, Mariani received one of the most exciting phone calls he's gotten in some time. On the other end was his Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher informing the rookie from Montana that he was selected to represent the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl. Mariani was selected to be the return specialist for the AFC in the NFL's elite all-star game which will take place Jan. 30 in Honololu, Hawaii. Mariani, the Titans' 2010 seventh-round...
Just two games stand between the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team and Frontier Conference play. And both games will certainly test the Lights. Northern begins play today in the AmericInn Classic in Havre against nationally-ranked Black Hills State. The Lights and Yellowjackets tip off at 6 at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. MSU-N then wraps up non-league play on Thursday with a game against the University of Lethbridge. Both games will be tune-ups for the Lights (8-4), who begin conference play Jan. 8 in...
Sunday was a rough day for the Tennessee Titans, as they were eliminated from AFC playoff contention with a 34-14 loss at Kansas City. But former Havre Blue Pony Marc Mariani had reason to celebrate. Mariani, who returned five kicks for over 100 yards Sunday, broke a 47-year-old franchise record for most kickoff return yards in a season. Mariani has surpassed the old Oilers/Titans mark of 1, 317 yards. He now has 1, 416 yards on the year heading into Sunday's finale at Indianapolis....
There's just one week left until Frontier Conference basketball teams finally get to start beating on each other. Each and every season, the Frontier is a war of attrition. With so many good teams on both the men's and women's side, it's generally a race to see who will outlast the rest come March. And so far, 2010 has shown that's exactly what might happen when the Frontier season gets here next week. Looking at the first half of the men's season, league favorite Westminster College has posted an 11-1 record heading into the...
After a strong outing, and a great start to the 2010-11 season, Montana State University-Northern junior forward Joe Simpson has been honored for his play. On Monday, Simpson was named Frontier Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. It's Simpson's first Frontier award of his career. Simpson is a 6-foot-4, junior forward from Pittsburg, Calif. With high school basketball games being played throughout the week, the 2010 portion of the season is now in the books on the Hi-Line. The Morning Stars jumped out to a 27-7 lead in the first half and went on to defeat the Badgers 54-37 in Cascade. Falene Russette paced Rocky Boy with 16 points and Tennae Singer added nine points in the conference win. There were also...

Chinook's Tyler Molyneaux, one of Montana's leading rushers this past fall, was selected to the East team at running back, while teammate Josh Jones earned a spot on the offensive line. Also make the cut was Harlem linebacker Tom...

It wasn't easy. It wasn't pretty at times, but when it mattered most, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team found a way to win at home. Playing without injured point guard and leading scorer Taylor Keller, the Skylights struggled at times against Concordia College of Alberta, but used a late 7-0 charge to upend the Thunder 57-45 Sunday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I feel like we only played about 7 minutes of basketball like we are supposed to play," Northern head coach Chris Mouat said....
In the first races of the young season, the Havre High boys and girls swim teams found out plenty about themselves by having to go up against two of the elite swimming programs in Montana. On Saturday afternoon at the Havre Community Pool, the Blue Ponies opened their 2010-11 season by hosting Great Falls High and CMR in a double-dual meet for the 2010 Havre Invitational. The Havre meet usually features more teams, but because some teams opted not to make the trip to Havre, the three teams swam together, but scored the meet a...
