  • Shockers highlight Frontier's opening week

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sportd editor

One week of Frontier Conference basketball is in the books. And what a week it was. The opening weekend of league play might have more of an effect on the final league standings than any opening week has in years, and it's mainly due to one night in Salt Lake City. On Thursday night, the Montana Tech men's and women's basketball teams went into Salt Lake and shocked the Westminster Griffins, favorites to win league titles on both sides. First, the Tech women pushed around the Griffins and earned an upset victory over the No....

  • Blue Pony swimmers compte with Class A's best

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

In the long-awaited return from the holiday break, the Havre High boys and girls swim teams were anxious to get back in the water. Although the Blue Ponies had to train for a few days without the use of their own pool, HHS still looked sharp this weekend at the annual Class A Meet in Hardin. The meet is a three-team extravaganza showcasing the only schools which compete in swimming in Class A — Havre, Hardin and Billings Central. Back in the pool, the Blue Pony swimmers had a strong outing in Hardin. On the girls side, the P...

  • Hi-Line girls basketball roundup

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The first full weekend of 2011 girls basketball on the Hi-Line is in the books. And coming out of the holiday break, teams were ready to play. Friday night saw the Big Sandy Pioneers earn an important District 9C win on the road, beating the Chinook Sugarbeeters 52-48. In a close game, the Beeters played a stellar first half and led 26-21 at the half, and 37-32 at the end of three quarters. But the Pioneers ripped off a 20-10 run in the final eight minutes to take the win. Mariah Gullickson led three Pioneers in double...

  • 2011 Frontier Women's Basketball Preview

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

There's never been a shortage of good women's basketball teams in the Frontier Conference. After all, many consider the league to rival the Golden State Athletic Conference as the best in NAIA Division I. And that balance of power isn't likely to change in the near future. Coming into the first week of the 2011 Frontier season, the league has three ranked teams in LC State, Westminster and Carroll College, while programs at Montana Tech, MSU-Northern and Rocky have also put together strong nonconference runs this season. And...

  • 2011 Frontier Men's Basketball Preview

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Men's basketball in the Frontier Conference has become as powerful as anywhere else in the country. In just the last two seasons, the Frontier has made five NAIA tournament appearances with four different teams, and it was less than two years ago that the Frontier produced a national champion when Rocky Mountain College captured the 2009 NAIA title. And while the faces and names on the back of the jersey's change around the league, the high level of basketball doesn't. Two-time Frontier champion Westminster starts the year...

  • Skylights, Lights well prepared

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

When it comes to the Frontier Conference season, the Montana State University-Northern men's and women's basketball teams have similar approaches in preparing for league play. And with their Frontier openers at UGF just two days away, the Lights and Skylights are hoping their philosophy has paid off. Both Northern teams have spent the last two months taking on a rigorous nonconference schedule, mostly built around difficult road and neutral sight games. The hope is, that after the schedule both teams played in November and...

Letter to the Editor — Zane J. Rosette

Hill County people help one another Editor: What makes our communities a success is the amount of support we have for one another. Master Sports and Tilleman Motors are two businesses I would like to thank for supporting area youth activities. I know that my business will stay with you, and I will continue to promote you to people who will listen. Keep up the good business practices and thank you. Zane J. • City shouldn’t talk about ice removal

Letter to the Editor — Lesley Poitra

City shouldn't talk about ice removal Editor: This is in regard to a Dec. 23 article about keeping our sidewalks clear of ice. Of all people to tell us about sidewalk winter maintenance shouldn't be city Public Works Director Peterson or his assistant Jenson because they can't even take care of our streets, and we pay them. I have worked in all the Rocky Mountain states and worked in a lot of different cities, and not once have I seen poor maintenance like Havre. I was out at Rocky Boy the other day, and all the villages I...

  • Mariani sets Titans all-time record

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Sunday wasn't the ending to the NFL's regular season the Tennessee Titans were hoping for. But a 23-20 loss to the Indianapolis Colts didn't top Titans rookie and former Havre Blue Pony Marc Mariani from making a little more history. Mariani ripped off a 47-yard kickoff return on his second return of the day, and in the process of that return broke Derrick Mason's franchise record, set in 2000, of 1,794 combined punt and kickoff return yards in a single season. It was the second return record Mariani set in as many weeks. At...

  • Highway 2 sweep in Malta

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High boys and girls basketball teams weren't slated to return from the holiday break until Friday. But a season-opening snow storm back on Dec. 10 meant the Ponies would have a game earlier in 2011 than originally planned. And Havre's return to the hardwood didn't go the way either Blue Pony team was hoping Monday night in Malta. The Havre High girls fell to the defending Class B state champion Malta M-Ettes Monday night, 62-48, while the Pony boys suffered a heartbreaking 51-47 loss to the Mustangs. The boys game...

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

With the month of January winding down, the race is on in girls high school basketball on the Hi-Line. With the postseason looming, every game becomes critical and this past weekend was no exception. The week got off to a rough start for a pair of Hi-Line teams as Class B Rocky Boy and Class C Big Sandy both dropped Thursday night nonconference games. In Malta, the Morning Stars fell to District @B powerhouse Malta, 57-27. The M-Ettes raced out to a 21-5 lead and never let Rocky Boy back in the game. Tennae Singer and Falene...

  • Magical Mariani ride culiminates in Hawaii

George Ferguson, Havre Daily News sports editor

Even if Marc Mariani hadn't obliterated Pro Bowl return records on Sunday, even if he hadn't had the chance to field an astounding nine kickoffs, the former Havre High and University of Montana football star would have still been in heaven as he departed Honolulu for the colds of the mainland on Monday night. That's because Mariani just wrapped up a week's worth of experiences even some of the best football players on the planet might not ever get. But the fact is, not only was Mariani's trip to Hawaii one of the highlights...

  • 2011 Frontier Women's Preview

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Year and in a year out, Frontier Conference women's basketball is arguably the premier conference in all of the NAIA. The Frontier is loaded with good teams and very good players at both the guard and post position, and the 2011 season will be no different. Already, Lewis-Clark State and Westminster are ranked in the Top 10 nationally, and Carroll College, Montana Tech and MSU-Northern look to have deep and talented teams as well. And when talking about Frontier teams, it isn't just the teams that are good. On any given...

  • Ponies get back to work

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Havre High boys and girls basketball teams were not set to return to action until Jan. 7. But because of this notoriously rough winter on the Hi-Line, plans have changed. The Pony boys and girls teams will return from the holiday break on Monday night when they make up their postponed season-opening games in Malta. The games were to take place back on Dec. 10 but were postponed because of a winter storm which pounded the area that week, which in turn resulted in poor travel conditions. But on Monday night, the Ponies...

  • Skylights finish Vegas trip with a win

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

When the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team went to Las Vegas for the annual Las Vegas Shootout earlier this week, the Skylights had three games in which to prepare for the upcoming Frontier Conference season. So playing well in Las Vegas was at a premium. And after a hard-fought 75-62 win over Siena height College out of Michigan on Thursday night, the Skylights can come home feeling prepared for the start of conference play. "Overall, I think we played four halves of basketball this week where were ve...

  • George Ferguson Column: Remembering 2010 for more than the wins

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Often times, sports have us so consumed, we often lose sight of what they were intended for in the first place. You'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who will tell you that sports were first created as a means of exercise and recreation anymore, or even more so, anyone who truly believes that. But that's precisely why they were put on this earth in the first place. And does anyone really believe anymore that sports pull people together from all walks of life? That they are unique brand of socialization which bonds people,...

Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas, the Skylights won their second of three games at the Las Vegas Shootout, drubbing Ursuline College 83-57. • Skylights fall in Las Vegas

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team knew its game with Fresno Pacific at the Las Vegas Shootout would be tough, especially without starting point guard Taylor Keller. And while Tuesday's game against Golden State Athletic power Fresno was indeed a grind, the Skylights showed at times while they'll be tough to handle when Frontier Conference play opens next week. Fresno beat the Skylights 75-61 on Tuesday afternoon in Las Vegas, thanks I large part to a blistering second-half performance. But it was...

  • Mariani is Pro Bowl bound

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

The dream just keeps getting better for former Havre High star Marc Mariani. On Tuesday afternoon, Mariani received one of the most exciting phone calls he's gotten in some time. On the other end was his Tennessee Titans head coach Jeff Fisher informing the rookie from Montana that he was selected to represent the AFC in the 2011 Pro Bowl. Mariani was selected to be the return specialist for the AFC in the NFL's elite all-star game which will take place Jan. 30 in Honololu, Hawaii. Mariani, the Titans' 2010 seventh-round...

  • Big Return: Lights clobber Thunder

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Back-to-back road games, a 12-hour bus ride, little sleep and a dangerous nonconference opponent. Those are things that didn't affect the Montana State University-Northern men's basketball team in an 88-39 win over Concordia College of Alberta Sunday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. The Lights romped to victory in their first home game since Nov. 7, and they did it on the heels of two tough games in Lewiston, Idaho over the weekend. "There were a lot of things that were different about this game and things we hard to...

  • MSU-Northern women survive a scare from Concordia

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

It wasn't easy. It wasn't pretty at times, but when it mattered most, the Montana State University-Northern women's basketball team found a way to win at home. Playing without injured point guard and leading scorer Taylor Keller, the Skylights struggled at times against Concordia College of Alberta, but used a late 7-0 charge to upend the Thunder 57-45 Sunday night at the MSU-Northern Fieldhouse. "I feel like we only played about 7 minutes of basketball like we are supposed to play," Northern head coach Chris Mouat said....

  • Mariani excited for his old quarterback

George Ferguson Havre Daily News sports editor

Marc Mariani and Gary Wagner have won championships together, literally. Not only did the duo help lead the Havre Blue Ponies to the 2004 Class A state football championship, but they teamed up to win a pair of doubles championships together in tennis for HHS. To say they've done a lot together is an understatement. And just last fall, Wagner showed he could also be a Mariani fan. Wagner was in the stands or on the sidelines for several games at Washington-Grizzly Stadium in 2009, cheering on Mariani as he completed his run...
